NONRENEWABLE
AND
RENEWABLE
RESOURCES
HMMMM....
What do you think
nonrenewable
resources are?
Break it down...
Nonrenewable?
Resource?
NONRENEWABLE
RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural
resource that cannot be re-made at a
suitable period of time
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS
Coal, petroleum, and natural
gas are considered
nonrenewable because they
can not be replenished in a
short period of time. These
are called fossil fuels.
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are
natural resources that can be
replenished in a short period
of time.
● Solar
● Wind
● Water
SOLAR
Energy from the sun.
Why is energy from the
sun renewable?
WIND Energy from
the wind.
Why is energy
from the wind
renewable?
Minerals
What are minerals ?
They make up solid matter in Earth’s surface.
How are they formed?
Many minerals form when magma cools beneath the Earth’s surface.
•Rocks contains useful substances as minerals
are called Ores
Uses Of Minerals
•Minerals have wide range of uses from:
A) Construction to
B)Jewelery
Minerals used in Construction
Quartz
1)It contains Silicon which is used in computer chips
2)Pieces of quartz are used in watches and clock.
3)It can be found in granite which is a rock used in
buildings
2)Marbles
They are formed of minerals .
Minerals used as jewelery
They are called Gems
1)Diamonds
2)Sapphires
3)Rubies
Soil and rocks
• Most rocks in Earth’s surface are covered with layers of soil , which is a mixture
of weathered rock , decayed animal and plants remains
• In some places it can take hundreds or thousands of years for soil to form.
How do fuels form?
• Fossil Fuel are formed over millions of years from the
remains of ancient organisms .
• So ,they are considered “non-renewable resources”
1)The formation of coal began in ancient
swamps.
When plants in those areas died they sank to the bottom of the swamp.
A thick layer of peat or decayed dead plants built up and this layer was
buried by layers of sand and other sediment
2)After long time ,heat and pressure at the bottom of earth
they turn the plant to “Lignite “ or “Bituminous”
(soft coal).
3)Extreme heat changes soft coal (bituminous coal)to hard
coal (anthracite) .
N.B: When soft coal burns more energy is produced than hard
coal
Oil and Natural gases
They are formed from remains of living organisms that were once alive in the
ocean.
They settle to Ocean floor and were buried by sand before completely decaying
Over millions of year pressure and heat turned the remains of these
organisms into oil and natural gas .
Can you figure out what is the main
difference between Coal and Natural gas
?
