The Variety of Resources Available and How the Resources Are Helpful in

                                  Differentiating Instruction

With so many advances in technology, teachers can use the vast numbers of

resources to improve the way they teach. As a future educator, I know that making lesson

plans can be difficult for an entire class and that it is even harder to tailor every

assignment to students’ specific needs. However, technology and the variety of resources

make it easier to plan lessons and incorporate every type of ways students learn. With

online lesson plans, games and activities, and educational videos teachers can now find

ways to incorporate every learning style. By doing this the teacher will be able to better

educate students on every level in their classroom.

Differentiated instruction is giving each student the tools they need to achieve at

high levels. For example giving students different worksheets depending on their

understanding and building their knowledge level up so that eventually they can complete

the higher-level worksheets. By doing this, the teacher simply gives students more time

to work on what they need to. However, this does not mean that the expectations change

between levels or that the teacher should focus only on the struggles. This means that the

teacher should keep expectations high and focus on the students’ strengths as well.

Another way that teachers could achieve differentiated instruction is by separating people

into small groups. This would provide time to work with each group on what they need

(Allan). Differentiated instruction is a good way for teachers to specialize the curriculum

for each student. It is especially important to include different types of instruction now

that teachers have access to all types of resources.

Teachers can go about differentiating instruction in many ways and the easiest

place to start is online. A teacher has a wide variety of resources available to them on the

internet to help them create these differentiated instruction lesson plans. Some websites

can give video resources, sample lesson plans, and advice on how to go about this type of

instruction. For example, this one teacher talked about how he let some of his students

read on top of desks, which sparked a joy to read in these students who usually fell asleep

during reading time (Hull-Sypnieski and Ferlazzo). It is interesting to see how easily you

can change the instruction type to spark an interest in a certain subject that was

previously uninteresting. Different types of these resources are all over the internet and

teachers have access to a lot of informative resources and ways to incorporate different

types of instruction.

It is important for teachers to understand the power of differentiated instruction

and how readily available they have resources to make this type of instruction possible.

At one point differentiating instruction would have been almost impossible to

accomplish, but now in the time of technology it is easier that it ever has been. There are

plenty of resources that can help teachers with things to include in their lesson plans as

well as making lesson plans around this way of instruction.
