Smart cities of the future have arrived, using technologies like sensors, wireless connectivity, and data analysis to make infrastructure like transportation, waste management, and energy use more efficient. Key elements of smart cities include using data from sensors embedded throughout the city to optimize systems for residents' needs, integrate infrastructure planning, and apply information and communication technologies across all city systems. As technologies advance, cities will retrofit older buildings for energy efficiency, deploy more renewable energy sources, offer improved public transportation options and traffic management through sensors, and apply sensors in public spaces to enhance services and identify issues. Residents will benefit from smart home technologies, drone deliveries, and analytics of their travel patterns to improve urban planning.
Doing REST Right

Reactive Microsystems: The Evolution of Microservices at Scale
Everyone is talking about Microservices and there is more confusion than ever about what the promise of Microservices really means—and how to deliver on it. To address this situation, we will explore Microservices from first principles, distill their essence and put them in their true context: Distributed Systems.
Distributed Systems is very hard and we—system developers—have been spoiled by centralized servers for too long. Slicing an existing system into various REST services and wiring them back together again with synchronous protocols and traditional enterprise tools—designed for Monolithic architectures—will set us up for failure.
As if that wasn’t enough, we can’t only think about systems of Microservices. In order to make each Microservice scalable and resilient in and of itself, we have to design each Microservice as a Distributed System—a «Microsystem»—architected from the ground up using the Reactive principles and Events-first Domain Driven Design.
In this talk I’ll walk you through the evolution of such a system, discussing what you need to know in order to design a Scalable Microservices Architecture.

Applications today are increasingly being designed using a share-nothing, microservices architecture that is resilient to the failure of individual components, even when built atop cloud infrastructure that can suffer infrequent-but-massive outages. Yet we still see many supporting tools for application monitoring, observability, configuration management and release management using a centralized “orchestration” approach that depends on pushing changes to unreliable distributed systems.
In this Sensu Summit 2018 talk, Chef's Julian Dunn & Fletcher Nichol give you a primer about promise theory and the autonomous actor model that underlies the design of products like Sensu and Habitat, why it leads to not only higher overall system reliability but human comprehension for easier operations. They argue that you should consider designing all of your applications and supporting systems in this way. They may even show a demo or two to illustrate how inverting the design radically changes the notion of “application release orchestration”, so that you can retain orchestration-type semantics even with an eventually-consistent system design.

What is RUDDER and when should I use it?

Rudder is an open source configuration management tool that includes continuous auditing (with or without remediation), compliance info and graphs and the possibility to configure everything in the UI and/or APIs.
It has been around for more than six years and has users large (think 10 000 nodes) and small around the world.
Let’s take a moment to look at the vision that lead us here, how Rudder is different from similar tools, and what users find invaluable, nice (or annoying - I’ll be honest!).

Distributed computing and hyper-parameter tuning with Ray
Come for a while and learn how to execute your Python computations in parallel, to seamlessly scale the training of your machine learning models from a single machine to a cluster, find the right hyper-parameters, or accelerate your Pandas pipelines with large dataframes.
In this talk, we will cover Ray in action with plenty of examples. Ray is a flexible, high-performance distributed execution framework. Ray is well suited to deep learning workflows but its utility goes far beyond that.
Ray has several interesting and unique components, such as actors, or Plasma - an in-memory object store with zero-copy reads (particularly useful for working on large objects), and includes powerful hyper-parameter tuning tools.
We will compare Ray with its alternatives such as Dask or Celery, and see when it is more convenient or where it might even completely replace them.

Sequence manager
SequenceManager is a software solution that enables batch sequencing capabilities on Logix family controllers. It allows configuration of batch operations in Studio 5000 Logix Designer and running sequences in FactoryTalk View SE while capturing batch results. SequenceManager directs PhaseManager programs inside Logix controllers in a ordered sequence to implement process tasks for single or multiple unit operations using ISA-88 methodology. It provides benefits like distributed sequence execution, fast and reliable execution native to the controller, and reduced infrastructure costs for small systems.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.
