Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. In Support of Advocate Penn State’s Double Pell Campaign
Nature of the Situation

The Pell Grant program provides necessary financial relief to seven million low-income students

nationwide, including 18,629 Penn State students. Penn State is proud to be ranked fifth in the
4
nation among public four-year institutions for educating Pell Grant recipients, however, today’s
5
Pell Grant awards are lower in value than they were in 1978 when adjusted for inflation. This
6
lack of funding has led to a significant decrease in purchasing power and an increase in student
7
debt.

The cost to attend college has skyrocketed over the past several decades, and the need to fund
10
essential financial aid programs like the Pell Grant has never been greater. These programs
11
encourage degree competition, on-time graduation, and lower levels of student debt. Ensuring
12
that all students- regardless of their financial situation- have equal access to higher education is
13
vital for the strength of our nation’s workforce, enhancing global economic competitiveness, and
14
helping marginalized communities achieve success.

As such, Advocate Penn State, through the Office of Government and Community Relations, has
17
joined higher education institutions and associations around the country by launching the Double
18
Pell campaign, which encourages students across the University to ask their members of
19
Congress to double the Federal Pell Grant. Students do not have to be Pennsylvania residents in
20
order to advocate, as U.S. Representatives and Senators across the country need to hear from
21
supporters.

2. Recommended Course of Action

The University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA), on behalf of the University Park
26
undergraduate Student Body, hereby supports Advocate Penn State’s Double Pell campaign. As
27
such, the UPUA encourages all students to take action by going to www.advocate.psu.edu and
28
filling out the “Action Alert” to send an email to their representatives. The UPUA also
29
encourages the University Park undergraduate student body to follow Advocate Penn State on
30
social media, as all future action alerts and updates will be posted on these platforms. We charge
31
the Department of Public Relations with disseminating this information through its channels and
32
tagging Advocate Penn State on the UPUA’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
