This document describes a new portable non-destructive testing (NDT) method for measuring residual stress. The method uses an impact device and vibration sensor to measure the acceleration of vibrations caused by impacting the metal surface. By analyzing the vibration frequency and acceleration, along with other parameters, the exact residual stress or applied load value can be obtained directly in N/mm2. The new method allows simple, rapid and portable measurement of residual stress at multiple points on metal surfaces, making it useful for inspecting buildings, bridges and other steel structures.
