2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Bias – Conservative or liberal? For or against?
Use Google Scholar or Books
Add “site:” to limit to specific types

15. Writing is not a patchwork quilt
Have your topic & argument or thesis thought

Understand the source as a whole, rather than
choosing random phrases or sections.
Your task is to extract, distill and compress
essential content that will be useful in proving
your point

16. “Cut-and-Paste”: it’s easy to copy text, make
absolutely sure you quote it.
▪ "There are two basic types of sociodramatic play training:
Outside intervention and inside intervention" (Christie 29).
▪ Christie states that "there are two basic types of
sociodramatic play training: Outside intervention and inside
intervention" (29).
Better to paraphrase – put the information in
your own words
Paraphrase still needs a source:

Examples from MIT
17. If the existence of a signing ape was unsettling for
linguists, it was also startling news for animal
behaviorists
(Davis 26).
Not OK:
If the presence of a sign-language-using chimp was disturbing
for scientists studying language, it was also surprising to
scientists studying animal behavior (Davis 26).
OK:
According to Flora Davis, linguists and animal behaviorists were
unprepared for the news that a chimp could communicate with
its trainers through sign language (Davis 26).
