Project Classroom Makeover, By Cathy Davidson

Professor Lee
ENC 1102
25 September 2015
Summary
Cathy Davidson is an English and humanities professor at Duke University. She has published over
twenty books, many dealing with technology and education. In Project Classroom Makeover, she
argues that the way the United States teaches students is not preparing them for the skills needed for
success in the twenty first century. To illustrate her point, Professor Davidson presents the historical
development of the educational system in the U.S. She differentiates high standards from
standardization and stresses the need for education to offer rigor, relevance, and relationship (201). In
2010, the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School ... Show more

In the farming society of the early 1800 s, education was not possible for many children. Horace
Mann, a farm boy himself and an early advocate for educational reform, saw the deficiencies in the
educational system. He pushed for common schools that would retain local control, be co educational
and revolve around the agricultural year. Mann s ideas began to be adopted around the country in the
second half of the nineteenth century. By the start of the twentieth century, mandatory public
schooling was the norm. This was the height of the industrial revolution. As Davidson notes in Project
Classroom Makeover , Public Education was seen as the most efficient way to train potential workers
for labor in the newly urbanized factories (197). Schools began to work like an assembly line with a
focus on efficiency, attention to detail, memorization of facts and staying on task. Curriculum became
standardized and states began to replace the local management of education. Critically thinking
outside the box was less valued. Regardless of ability, children started school at the same age and were
moved through their education in a regulated process. By the middle of the twentieth century, as the
United States became a world power, the educational focus had shifted from elementary education to
the attainment of high school and college degrees. A goal of education was to produce leaders. The
period after WWII

Informative Speech On Thyroid Gland
Did you know that every cell of the human body has thyroid hormone receptors? They re intricately
woven into the DNA. So, if you think about it, the thyroid gland basically has control of the entire
body. As part of the endocrine system, the thyroid secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream,
and these hormones are responsible for regulating many bodily functions. It controls the body s
metabolism, protein synthesizing, energy consumption, and the functions of other vital organs.
Want to know more about the thyroid? Read on to know more facts about the thyroid gland:
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland situated in the neck. It has two lobes that expand on either side.

It uses iodine to produce T4 and T3, the thyroid hormones. Iodine is found in seafood, plants grown
on iodine rich soil, and iodized salt. The gland also gets its cue from the brain. The pituitary gland
secretes Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and the thyroid responds to it.
The thyroid is sensitive to environmental toxins. Frequent exposure to toxins like plastic compounds,
pesticides, and heavy metal can cause goiter, a condition where the neck or larynx swells due to the
enlargement of the thyroid gland.
The thyroid also plays a hand in controlling the calcium level in your blood. The C cells, a small
group of cells located in the thyroid gland, secrete the hormone called calcitonin, which controls
calcium level.
The thyroid s health is dependent on a number of vitamins and minerals. Including iodine, the thyroid
needs Vitamin A, Vitamin D, B Vitamins, selenium, and zinc. A well balanced diet is necessary to
supply the thyroid with these vitamins and minerals.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland is overactive. It s often caused by Graves
Disease, an autoimmune disorder that stimulates the thyroid to overproduce hormones.
Hyperthyroidism is characterized by tremors and increased heart rate, anxiety, restlessness, and weight

The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay
Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning
homework, every student s heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as
well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should
give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less
homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less homework is
that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a day, and then goes
home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that student adopt an
eight eight eight schedule. This schedule being eight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn). The
next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause
lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores
(Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle
school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown
to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that
homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too much homework making
standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work (Wolchover). Many teachers
ask their student to re write pages in a textbook. This just causes the student to spend time on
something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect on students. It just takes up
more time ( Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and Lower Grades, Studies Suggest
). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited. Studies show that a student s time is
more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent s want their student to be good at many
things. It is more important to be a well rounded person than to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One

Being About Our Father s Business
Being About Our Father s Business Jennifer Butler PT Summer 2014 Dean Lee August 16, 2014
When looking at the three dimensions of worship, our first instinct is to put them in order of priority
for ourselves. This is what I did. I remember a pastor saying once in a sermon that if your relationship
with God is right, then you, your relationships, and your service/ministries will fall in line. I truly
believe that. So, I believe that the most important of the three is Upward Worship. Our main purpose
in life is to give God all of our praises and all of our honor. It s not about me. It s about living in God
and for God. Colossians 1:16 says For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created
through him and for him. This means that we should be about our Father and not about ourselves. This
doesn t mean that on Sunday, we spend a couple of hours in church, it means that in everything we
think, say, or do we do to glorify and honor God. Some examples of Upward Worship would be
prayer, praise and thanksgiving, listen to his word in study and meditation. It is when we dedicate
ourselves to His will and His edification that we have the security of knowing that this upward form is
fulfilling. The Inward dimension of worship refers to our relationships with others. We are called to
serve, and serve with humility. When we are serving

Sample Literature Review On Antisocial Personality Disorder
In the article The antisocial person: an insight into biology, classification and current evidence on
treatment authors Rodrigo, Rajapakse, and Jayananda (2010) explored PubMed looking for published
English articles between 1999 to 2009 with the search words, antisocial personality disorder, dissocial
personality disorder, and psychopathy. The purpose of the literature search was to look for advances in
understanding the neurobiology of violence and empathy, effective treatment modalities, and ethical
implications in defining at risk individuals for preventive interventions. Data sources for this review
included clinical journals, cohort studies, interventional studies, case control studies, cross sectional
analysis and epidemiological studies. The search revealed a number of interesting findings, such as the
different terminology used, treatment related issues, and the importance of early identification and
prevention of antisocial behavior. Empathy was also a targeted area. The search examined the
neurobiology of empathy and noted that the limbic system and the insula and the anterior cingulate
cortex had roles in assessing emotions of self and others. Although the search uncloaked new
information surrounding the topic, future research needs to be directed in the ... Show more content on

In the beginning of Hatchet, Brian is still learning what his surroundings include, such as raspberries,
gut cherries, and wood. He would not be able to make the shelter he made without his mostly good
attitude and his motivation. When he finds out that he has to strike the hatchet on the wall of the
alcove to make fire, he tries. It takes a lot of effort and he almost gave up, but his motivation saved
him and he was able to make this fire, even though it took almost a day. He succeeded in making his
fire and he was indeed satisfied. The fire helped him with many other achievements throughout the
book such as first meat, protection, and bug repellent. Near the middle of the book, Brian is attacked

people didn t do anything to deserve this but it still happens to them, the unfairness people are treated

Analysis Of Rick Blain And His Internal Conflict
Analysis of Rick Blain and His Internal Conflict From the audience s perspective, Casablanca
(Michael Curtiz, 1942) is a romantic drama. The scene where Rick Blaine, the lead male, is at the bar
after seeing Ilsa Lund, his former lover, is the most dramatic moment in the film. The audience first
sees Rick alone at the bar drinking. Sam walks in the bar and has a powerful conversation with Rick.
The moment that these two characters share is dramatic because the audience is getting to see a side of
Rick that hasn t been seen yet. The audience is used to seeing Rick as the perfect man. After he sees
Ilsa, he breaks down, which is indicated by his heavy drinking, showing that he has a weakness. The
cinematography helps show the dynamic change in Rick. The shot distance allows the audience to see
Rick s facial expressions. Although Rick is seen as strong and independent, when he is reunited with
Ilsa, he is drawn into a darkness that he is struggling with in the scene; it is easy to see the struggle of
man vs. himself and the concept of masculinity. In this scene we see Rick in a vulnerable state after
having seen Ilsa for the first time in a year. The camera shot is varied from close ups to medium long
shots. When a close up is used the audience can see the emotions on Rick s face more clearly. He is
burdened with memories of the past. This breaks with the idea of masculinity because the audience
can clearly see that Rick is in distress. Men are burdened with social norms that

What Is The Death Of The Ball Turret Gunner
The ball turret gunner of the B 17 and B 24 was an important job; however was a dangerous one. In
Randall Jarrell s The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner makes a comparison to a ball turret to a mother s

From the birth of him, to when he s in the ball turret, to when he is dead. First, the birth of the gunner.
In the poem it says From my mother s sleep I fell into the State (ln.1). In this line Jarrell is comparing

had to sit in a fetal, so they could aim and shoot, but in the mother s womb you have to sit in a fetal

Black Lives Matter ( Blm )
Introduction
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a looselyā€coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police
brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black
feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag
are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through
their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references
in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot
of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black
Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to
rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight
the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left
powerless at the hands of the state. This referring to the ways in which Black lives are deprived of
basic human rights and dignity. According to the article The Murder of Walter Scott, which talks about
race and class, African Americans are less than 13% of the U.S. population yet they are nearly 50% of
those killed by the police. North Charleston has a population of 104,000, 47% Black and the police
force is 80% white (Miah, 2015) .

The Gulag Camp System In The 1930 s
The Gulag Camp System was established in the Soviet Union during the 1930 s. These camps forced
people to do intense labor under harsh conditions. Whether large or small, each camp was known for
its brutality. During these harsh times it was hard to ignore what was going on, however no one could
prevent it from happening. People feared for their lives when the thought of Gulags came up, as
referenced in the book 1984, written by George Orwell.
The term Gulag is a Russian acronym for Glavany Upravlenie Lagerey meaning, camp . These camps
operated for two main reasons: a way to deal with prisoners and unwanted individuals; and also
helped build the infrastructure by forced labor (Hayes). During Joseph Stalin s campaign the camps
grew tremendously. The camps varied in size, however the largest camps were located in the most
extreme regions in the country. Work was mostly manual, unskilled, and inefficient. While working in
the camps, prisoners had to work for their food. The more work they did, the more food they earned. A
variety of different things led to a high death rate among the camps (Gulag). Some people believe that
Stalin began the camps, however Vladimir Lenin was the real father of the Gulag System (Hayes). The

Cannery Row Analysis

After reading the opening chapter it is easy to imagine yourself to the real settings. Story revolves
around the very realistic environment of harbour cities in the twentieth century; stinky mixed odour of
dead and living fish and rusty metal splinters sprawling all around. So, if you get properly affected by
that description, you should nose out the stink of canned fish and feel like you Ģre one of those oil

Everything is rusty and so the overall view is reddish brown. Splintered wood and weedy lots reflects

working for that. There Ģs no time for such thing as renovation, the minor time called leisure is ... Show

Educating the patient and their family, keeping medical treatment follow ups are very important and
managing the disease. At this time, I go every six months to see my Rheumatologist now. I previously

with an illness like lupus. In many cases, you may not understand your symptoms. Your relative may

Positive Aspects Of Intercultural Relationships
There are certain qualities that are necessary for the development of intercultural relationships. An
individual who pursues these relationships can find many positive and unique aspects in developing
relationships with those from other cultures. In contrast, there are those that tend to avoid people from
other cultures due to preconceived ideas about certain people groups and uncertainty in
communication as well as the desire to stay in their comfort zone in seeking others that are similar
(Samovar pgs. 387 88). Personally, my own experience with intercultural relationships has provided
for me a more balanced view of the world and the ability to look at my own culture in a whole new
way.
I believe in order to become more developed interculturally, it involves letting go of ethnocentrism. I
discovered this was an area of struggle when I first moved abroad to China. I didn t realize that my
superior cultural attitude over the host culture got in the way of developing relationships in the other
culture. How much more this can play out when we are in our own culture. Furthermore, this attitude
initially blocked my ability to learn not only from Chinese culture but other cultures in the
international community as well. As I learned that my culture has its flaws, a positive aspect in
developing interculturally relationships is that I became less ethnocentric.
I think another positive aspect in developing intercultural relationships is the ability to expand your
worldview. This

Oedipus the King, a Tragic Hero Essay
Oedipus, a tragic hero
Sophocles s Oedipus Rex is probably the most famous tragedy ever written. Sophocles s tragedy
represents a monumental theatrical and interpretative challenge. Oedipus Rex is the story of a King of
Thebes upon whom a hereditary curse is placed and who therefore has to suffer the tragic
consequences of fate (tragic flaws or hamartia). In the play, Oedipus is the tragic hero. Even though
fate victimizes Oedipus, he is a tragic figure since his own heroic qualities, his loyalty to Thebes, and
his fidelity to the truth ruin him.
In The Poetics, the greatest statement of classical dramatic theory, Aristotle cites Oedipus as the best
example of Greek tragedy. According to Aristotle, Oedipus is a tragic hero because ... Show more

As outlined in the proposal, Oedipus is a tragic hero even though he didn t die because of the facts
described by Aristotle satisfies the character of Oedipus. In this story the character s egotism and self
centrism has caused him a different fate, drawing attention of the audiences on the issues that the
human behaviors directly affect the human emotions as Oedipus blinded his eyes by himself after
finding out the truth. Here the hunger for the truth overshadowed by his grandiosity as explained by
Miller has made Oedipus to find out what he hadn t expected. He was just willing to help somebody
but as it was overcame from his confidence and proud, the story is able to manipulate the audience s
feeling and make feel sorry for the character even though it is already known to the audiences that
Oedipus was wrong, as seen from his confident and proud actions. While in Thelma and Louise, the
feelings generated to the audience are different. Unlike Oedipus, in Thelma and Louise the human
feelings were not played ironically but instead were diverted from characters actions from one wrong
action to series of others. Oedipus ends in misery and sorrow of his past but Thelma and Louise ends
up surrounded by the results of their wrong activities, which they tried to overcome by running away
from it rather than facing it like Oedipus. At the end too, both tragedy shows the different perspective
of life. One is with full of pride and

Pablo Picasso s Gruernica Essay examples
In 1937, Pablo Picasso depicts an epic event in history in his Guernica using visual symbolism, line,
space, light and color which advocates to the observer the truth behind the subject matter of the
artwork itself. The line used leads to specific images to tell the story; the space throughout the work is
filled with many jagged and sharp shapes with an odd use of positive and negative space. The light
and color illuminate the actual scene. Knowing and understanding how the artist uses these three
fundamental tools will guide us to the meaning and logic of the artwork.
Pablo Picasso s use of line gives a sense of direction almost as key to unlock the meaning of the

Now combined with the images of the candle, the light fixture and the horse we gather that, by
definition, the horse is the most economically important domesticated animal and was diminished due
to mechanization. The candle next to the light shows us a change in technology, advocating the death
of the horse with a spear in the side, as the destruction of Spain s cultural origins. Finally we see the
horse leading us back to the bull where between both heads we see the spirit flying away alerting us
that soul and spirit is being ripped away, that death is coming no matter if it is in a bull fight or a

Picasso s use of space in this masterpiece leads to similar conclusions to pain, suffering and the
eventual death of an ancient city or any living thing. This piece is extremely vivid and the use of space
used is probably breaking all the rules of art, but if we think about what we are actually seeing we are
not really looking at just art, we are looking at inhumane events in the world and it almost holds an
obligation to exploit the boundaries of art to get the desired effect which the artist has done
intentionally. Most art works contains non busy and busy areas which are proportional to one another
but in life we know that the main focus in the real world is all the chaos and that there is no balance
just that tunnel vision effect of the awe stricken horror. Even in the use of light and color Picasso

Comparing Satire In The Hunger Games And Brave New World
A.Satirical Writing
Satire is the use of humor, irony, or ridicule to show foolishness in humans and expose people s

Spanish American War Analysis
It is important to read historical accounts of other countries in regard to analyzing the Spanish
American War because it helps to paint a more full picture of what caused the war. From one
perspective only a partial story is told, which can seem bias or can be completely wrong. This is seen
in the Spanish American War from the perspective of Americans. It would seem that it is the Spanish s
fault for the destruction of the USS Maine, but once a different perspective is taken, it is realized that
the explosion came from the inside of the USS Maine. We know it came from the inside because the
hull of the wreckage is pointing outwards. This means the U.S. Maine was exploded intentionally to
spark conflict, meaning it wasn t the Spanish s fault.

Independence and the Development of the American Identity...
During the 1800s, we find the theme of independence, or freedom from outside constraints, in the
development of two different frontiers. We find it in the American West through Manifest Destiny,
freedom from caste, and in the chance that homesteaders had to acquire virtually free land. We find
independence in math through in the building of stronger theoretical foundations, non Euclidean
geometries, and Cantor s infinities.
Independence involves breaking from the commonly accepted, traditional views in order to explore
the new. It is not necessarily individual people working alone. We can see independence in a
community of thought as well as in the work of a single person.
Independence is an important part of the Western culture as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the 1880s, Hulda Rocell and her daughter Mary emigrated from Sweden to the United States. Abe
Lincoln had just been shot. Mr. Rocell had to stay in Sweden because of his tuberculosis.
Nevertheless, Mr. Rocell said, Go to the United States. It is strong enough that Lincoln s assassination
will not plummet the nation into chaos. Although he did not place this optimism under the title of
Manifest Destiny, the idea that the United States is strong, and will continue despite opposition, is a
part of this concept.
Hulda married, and her family settled in a sod house in northern Minnesota. Her husband showed
independence and determination for the family to survive by planting fruit trees on the farm. It was
highly unusual to attempt to plant fruit trees that far north.
The family s independent spirit, and courage was a vital part of surviving in the harsh conditions they
encountered. In 1881, there was a terrible blizzard. The snow was so high that it covered the fence
posts. Father tied a rope around his waist and the porch post to tend the animals in a nearby shed, so
that he would not get lost in the blizzard. However, many neighbors froze to death right outside their
own front doors. During the storm, the wind blew the door of the sod house open. The younger
children got in the trundle bed to keep warm, while the parents and older children shoveled snow out
of the house for the rest of the day, so that they could shut the

Electoral College Primer
The United States, where everyone is protected under the awe inspiring constitution. Every American
has the right to bear arms, the right to speak out for what they believe in, and the right to vote for their
chief executive. However, are Americans actually responsible for voting for the face of the United
States? The same document that granted Americans the right to vote, takes away that very right by
implementing the electoral college. The creation of the electoral college, thought to be a brilliant new
way to elect the president, stripped every American of the opportunity to vote for who they truly
desire to be the next president. Instead of voting for who they want, citizens vote and put their trust in
representatives who could very easily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The electoral college is full of issues and complications that further support the idea of it being
demolished. Despite the fact that many argue the electors vote based on the popular vote of the
citizens, it has been proven more than once that this is not the case. In fact, since the creation of the
electoral college, electors have never been bound to their presumed party under the constitution. The
book, Electoral College Primer written by Lawrence D. Longley and Neal R. Peirce offers insight on
the roles and requirements of a presidential elector. The book includes a quote by Senator Benton in
eighteen twenty six which reads, the elector, may give or sell his vote to the adverse candidate, in
violation of all the pledges that have been taken of him. The crime is easily committed, for he votes by
ballot; detection is difficult, because he does not sign it; prevention is impossible, for he cannot be
coerced; the injury irreparable, for the vote cannot be vacated; legal punishment is unknown and
would be inadequate... That these mischiefs have not yet happened, is no answer to an objection that
they may happen. As Senator Benton explained, electors are often bound by pledges, although it
wouldn t be unusual for a political figure to break a verbal promise. Since eighteen twenty six, state
laws have been put in place to attempt to limit the independence of each presidential elector, which
requires the electors to vote for their pledged candidate. Though some punishments for breaking the
law are strict including large fines and in some states even considered a felony, this law is only
observed in twenty seven states, leaving electors in twenty three states and the District of Columbia
without punishment for voting against their party. This signifies that in twenty three states, the only
thing bounding electors to voting with the popular

Catcher In The Rye Symbolism Essay
Catcher in the Rye essay Essay question: Analyse how symbolism was used to develop the key ideas
in the written text. In the novel Catcher in the Rye , author J.D Salinger uses symbolism to create and
portray key idea to us as the readers. The key ideas he portrays are; Holden Caulfield is the guardian
of youth and that Holden is a broken record that no one wants to listen to. Throughout the novel,
author J.D Salinger often mentions a red hunting hat worn by Holden and the way in which Holden
wear is it backwards. Now to me this reminds me of a backstop in baseball, the guy that stands behind
the batter and catches what the bowler throws at him. I say this because players in this position often
wear their caps backwards. I feel as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book is him with the pieces glued back together, his record glued together, spinning and making a
noise that people want to hear, the noise he wants to make. This idea of Holden being a broken record
or someone that no one wants to listen is further portrayed throughout the book. An example of this is
in the hotel room when Holden is with a prostitute. Even though she is getting paid she still doesn t
want to just sit down and listen to Holden talk, she s not up there to listen to a broken record. I feel
that this moment in the book is where I see the two key ideas Salinger is trying to portray finally link
together. In this part of the book we have Holden in a situation where he is meant to be doing adult
things but instead all he wants to is talk because as much as he wants to take part in these activities he
can t bring himself to do it because he is that catcher in the rye, the guardian of youth. At the same
time he is once again being portrayed by Salinger as a broken record because he wants to talk but the
girl doesn t want to listen. Overall I think that author J.D Salinger uses many different forms of
symbolism such as the hunting hat, the broken record and the description of Holden being the catcher
in the rye to portray key ideas to us the readers. These key ideas are; Holden Caulfield is the guardian
of youth and Holden is a broken record

Much Ado About Nothing Don John Character Comparison
Whether the writer, who sits and taps his pen methodically against a blank sheet of paper in thought,
does not have an idea of what his piece will be about, he will always have a list of characters to use.
This concept stands right to the fact that without characters, a story based on description is parallel to
a song without notes. Literature would prove incomplete without a protagonist followed by an
antagonist. Even the most skilled of writers, who write of beautiful skies and fields, all tied up with an
abundance of similes and flowery language, will not be able to translate a story from mind to paper
without the use of some characters. That is because characters create the overall conflict in a story,
portraying traits and attitude that can both be considered Godly as well as the complete opposite.
Literature proves this every time a new piece comes out, and Much Ado About Nothing by William
Shakespeare holds no exception. A character who does not translate Godly character and attitude ...

warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. The Lord said
this regarding impurity, anger, and most importantly jealousy and envy, all traits Don John possesses.
This verse proves that Don John is unrighteous for he lives and breathes the things the Bible is

Critique Of The Theories Of Muslimness
Critique of the Theories of Muslimness
In this section the aim is to investigate the theories of Muslimness, accusation of unbelief and
apostasy. Since, the accusation of unbelief has both theoretical and practical problems in the history of
Muslim cultures, it will be presented from the perspective of rational reason and scriptural reason. On
the one hand, the problem of Muslimness and accusation of unbelief is based on the view of the
majority of Muslim scholars, on the other hand, this issue have always been risky consequences and is
still continuing in the present days, which bring insecurity in the modern days in both Islamic
countries and non Muslim lands.

Guilt In Atonement
Joe Wrights film Atonement psychologically explores the feeling of guilt through the character,
Briony Tallis. By this I mean that through different scenes in the movie we see how Briony deals with
her guilt and how it shapes her life. Certain scenes that the audience can interpret in this way include
Briony looking out window, the apartment scene and Final interview.
Scene 1 Briony looking out window
In this scene we see Briony running to the window, after being sent to her room, to watch Robbie get
arrested. When she gets to the window we then see a POV shot from the window of Cecilia running
after Robbie and hugging him as he gets arrested. This gives Briony the first clue that she has done
something wrong as if Robbie had really been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here we see Briony explain that the apartment scene never took place but aside from that she
describes the book as all the truth, no rhymes, no embellishments . This repeated quote helps link the
this scene with the apartment scene and so helps the audience understand the apartment scene is the
way in which Briony believes she should have apologised but the real way in which she dealt with her
guilt was by writing the book and creating a new ending. She says that in the book I wanted to give
Robbie and Cecilia what they missed out on in real life and this quote is made even more powerful by
the close up of Briony s face in which we see true emotion. We see that Briony feels that this was the
only way in which she could make amends for what she did and the fact that Briony is releasing the
book at such an old age could be interpreted to mean that she was never able to break free from the
guilt she felt for what she had done. This scene as a whole can be read as a psychological exploration
of guilt as the audience interprets that Briony was never truly able to move on with her life because of
her guilt and that she feels partly responsible for Cecilia s and Robbie s death. We are able to see how
guilt can ruin someone s life if they are not able to move on or make up for their

Age Of Exploration: DBQ Throughout the course of history, a civilization may gain benefit from the
demolition of another. This course of action was the driving force of the Age of Exploration. What the
Spanish called discovery was really the downfall and destruction of a thriving civilization, only to be
rebuilt for the use of trans continental trade in the form of colonization. The survivors would be
enslaved and their neighbors would soon follow. The Age of Exploration can be remembered as a time
of new discovery, trade, and prosperity, but only the Europeans experienced the brighter side of things.

To truly make the America s one for the Europeans, the land would have to be completely clear in
order for the European plan of action to take effect. The cities would have already been ridden with
disease, which said in The Broken Spears, the document described smallpox from an Aztec point of
view, and the impact it had on killing everyone in the entire region. and demolition with nothing left,
the Europeans simply took over without any effort and began changing the politics of the
Americans. The enslavement of the population dwindled it s culture as seen in Hernan Cortes s letter to
Charles V, he tried to change their religion by destroying the statues and temples. Thought he would
not fully convert, according to Cortes, they would not perform any more sacrifices in his presence,
merely because he was there. But the real reason is because there was nothing to sacrifice with
because he has removed it from their land, and if there was, they would probably be too intimidated to
try. Another example found in the 20th century World Book, are dedicated Latin American towns, that
are designed to convert Indians to Christianity and change their livelihood to spanish and portugese
methods. The communities were slowly being forced to use European forms of agriculture, and means

Villain Or Scapegoat
Living in a world full of crime and violence, people begin to wonder what the cause of the violence is
and how it can then be prevented. Unfortunately, there is not a single root cause that can be found
when people attempt to decipher why children are deciding to bring guns to school and murder their
peers. Some may believe that it was influenced by being exposed to a hostile family, violent films, or
gory video games. Although sometimes this might be the case, a lot of the time it is not as black and

Huesmann and Taylor then begin to define violence in its various forms and stages. This seemed to be
slightly redundant and useless information since it is obvious and is not specific to the topic in
question. The authors then begin to obtain the reader s attention as they begin to describe the issue
faced by the youth having unlimited access to violence on television. A study done on children is then
mentioned, where half of the group watches a violent movie and the other half a non violent movie.
The two groups of kids are then combined for a hockey game where levels of aggressive behavior are
observed and compared. As expected, the research indicated that the kids who watched the violent
movie demonstrated more violent behavior.
The authors continue to point out the various influences that media violence is affecting the youth and
studies that back up their arguments. Huesmann and Taylor then shift to another source of violent
influence, videogames. The various ratings categories of video games, Everyone, Teen, and Mature,
are mentioned and the fact that all three of them allow some sort of violence. It is mentioned that the
Teen category consists of roughly 94% violent games which is astonishing. This turns out to become a
major issue because of the amount of time that teenagers spend playing video games. The authors then
mention studies that show that teenagers who play violent video games demonstrated

How Does Marriage Gradient Exist In The United States
Marriage gradient does exist in the U.S. society to a certain extent. From my what I ve seen and my
experience I find that it is based on the individual status, class, and culture. Marriage gradient strong
exists in the upper class in my opinion. Normally you see in the media the typical wealthy white collar
man working and making a great amount of money while they normally have a housewife sitting at
home attending to the children and home. You can find this scenario showed throughout plenty of
reality TV shows. In todays world those families are able to afford a chef, nanny, and cleaning lady
taking on the duties of the housewife. This leaves the wife living a stress free life with access to just
about anything she wants object wise. On the other hand, you see that most of the middle class marries
for love and other various reasons. I can t quite speak for all due to that most middle class lives are
private. From a culture standpoint, I hear women repeating what their mother told them as a child that
they needed to marry a nice wealthy man. Of course, there are some other requirement, but that s often
found to be the top priority if not religion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Theatre Of The Absurd Analysis
The Theatre of the Absurd is a collection of plays written after World War II that were considered of
having ridiculous and random ideals. Many of these plays came from Europe, including Rhinoceros
by Ionesco. In Rhinoceros, the main character Berenger is a man who is not keeping up with himself
and is having a midlife crisis. Everyone else in the town is living a normal life when the townspeople
start to turn into rhinoceroses. With his differentness and being so out of place, he is the only one left
as a human over a rhinoceros. Now that Berenger wants to be like everyone else and turn into a
rhinoceros, he cannot because of his major differences. In the play, Rhinoceros, different aspects of the
Theatre of the Absurd come through in the crazy storyline created by Ionesco. No communication and
no logic are two of the aspects of the absurd writing concepts during this time period. One of the
absurd aspects of no communication is found through the lines of the play.
No communication is one of the absurdist aspects in the play Rhinoceros that reoccurs throughout the
storyline. Towards the beginning of the play, the characters find that a rhinoceros is trampling through
the town. The housewife finds that her cat has been trampled on by the strange creature, and is very
upset. She wails to the others: It ran over my cat, it ran over my cat! (Ionesco 26). Everyone responds
back to her: Poor little thing! (Ionesco 26). Even though the cat has been trampled over and is dead,

I.INTRODUCTION
DNS is a protocol with some protocols for computers in exchanging data over the Internet. The
process is to turn a website like google.com into an machine readable address like 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
for IPv4 that computers use for identification on the network. In fact Google Public DNS is largest
DNS service in the world which handles more than 400 billion requests a day. All the computers or
hosts on the internet use IP Address to establish a connection with site they are need. With the DNS
service, we don t need to remember the whole bunch of numbers stacked at each decimal point. We
just use a DNS server and appropriate name servers and access the sites with specific names. And this
DNS server manages a massive database which maps the domain names to those IP Addresses.
On a short note, DNS server search for the domain name as per the User Request. This process is
named as DNS name Resolution and this means DNS servers converts the domain name to IP address.
As mentioned earlier, google.com has IP address of 8.8.8.8 which you enter directly into browser will
give you the Google s page. Web site s IP addresses are dynamic and some sites use many IP s with
only one Domain name.Without DNS servers, Internet access would be a lot tougher.

Differences And Similarities Between Formula 1 And Indycar
One of the most obvious examples of differences and similarities are the cars, with Formula 1 and
IndyCar being similar and NASCAR being the odd one out. However, the differences and similarities
go further than just the looks and the body design. Most people know that there are mechanical
differences between the cars, but not many know the specifics. The Montreal Grand Prix website
states, While the F1 and Indy cars feature open wheels and an open cockpit, NASCAR drivers are
enclosed in a sedan styled vehicle. It s also the heaviest of the three, averaging over 3,250 lbs (1,474

While they all initially use ungrooved racing tires, if it s raining, IndyCar and F1 apply grooved racing

Though IndyCar and F1 cars may have more similarities, NASCAR s vehicles still have their
similarities to the other divisions.
Other than the cars themselves, the three series have other comparable factors, such as their
backstories. Each Motorsports division started in different regions. They were each started by different
individuals or groups of people. According to NASCAR s website, the sport became more popular
after the end of the second World War. In 1947, Bill France formed the first branch of NASCAR or the
modern Monster Energy Series . Later, in the year 1982, members of NASCAR made a new series,
which was given the name the Late Model Sportsman Division, which later became the XFINITY

that was formed, which uses trucks instead of cars. The NASCAR website explains how the sport
started and how it expanded with the two additional series that it added. When the sport started, there
was no organization. However, as time went on, and because of men like Bill France, NASCAR
became an organized and popular sport. Founded in 1994, INDYCAR serves as the sanctioning body

The Message of Hate in Yevgeny Yevtushenko s Babi Yar
There are very few people in the world who are willing to go against the popular trends and do what
they feel in their hearts is correct. But Yevgeny Yevtushenko is one of those people. In his poem Babi
Yar, he tells the story of the modern persecution of the Jews, focusing on atrocities like those of the
massacre at Babi Yar and the pogroms at Beilostok, and also the general anti Semitism that killed men
like Dreyfus and pervades the entire Russian people. The poem uses many literary devices, such as

He says that he too must be a Jew for he is afraid of what his people and his society have become.
Many years ago, in the ancient days, it would not be such a shock to see the Jews enslaved in Egypt or
crucified as a means of torture and death, but even in modern times the same things are going on he
still has the marks from where the nails pierced him. The author has used classical examples of Jewish
persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how they still exist in the
theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring.
In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent
examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and
the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders
turned their backs on him.
There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word pettiness
on a line by itself. This is used as a declaration of what the author feels anti Semitism is based on. It is
because of pettiness that Dreyfus was accused and further because of pettiness that he was not
pardoned when it was proven that he had not committed any crime. The next important device is the
description of ladies with their umbrellas. This is an image to the wealthy

Abstract 2d Photonic Crystal ( Pc ) Based Power Splitter
Abstract 2D photonic crystal (PC) based power splitter with 60Ā° bend corners is designed and
analyzed. The splitting efficiency at its bends has been improved by encapsulating rectangular defect,
thereby increasing the power transmission of about 98.1%. A simple antiresonant reflecting optical
waveguide (ARROW B) is a polarization insensitive wave guiding, which utilizes antiresonance
reflection and provides better coupling when compared with conventional wave guiding. We
performed three dimensional finite difference time domain (3 D FDTD) simulation to calculate the
power transmission of Y splitter with ARROW B which is about 93.3%. The PC thus designed can

Whereas, an important crisis in power splitter is that how light get efficiently transmitted via the bend
corners. For that various methods have been proposed i. Providing row of pores with smaller diameter
ii. Coupled cavity design and iii. Three pore rows wide defect [2]. Although these techniques can
significantly increase the splitting efficiency, complicated time consuming computation is needed,
consequently an alternate method is proposed to improve the power split ability by incorporating
rectangular capsule shaped defect at its bends [4]. These defects with higher refractive index contrast
provide better reflection as compared to that of other methods mentioned. Besides the main source of
propagation losses in 2D PCW has been believed to be the guided modes position above the light line,
since modes above the light line can easily

  • 2. Project Classroom Makeover, By Cathy Davidson Jennifer White Professor Lee ENC 1102 25 September 2015 Summary Cathy Davidson is an English and humanities professor at Duke University. She has published over twenty books, many dealing with technology and education. In Project Classroom Makeover, she argues that the way the United States teaches students is not preparing them for the skills needed for success in the twenty first century. To illustrate her point, Professor Davidson presents the historical development of the educational system in the U.S. She differentiates high standards from standardization and stresses the need for education to offer rigor, relevance, and relationship (201). In 2010, the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the farming society of the early 1800 s, education was not possible for many children. Horace Mann, a farm boy himself and an early advocate for educational reform, saw the deficiencies in the educational system. He pushed for common schools that would retain local control, be co educational and revolve around the agricultural year. Mann s ideas began to be adopted around the country in the second half of the nineteenth century. By the start of the twentieth century, mandatory public schooling was the norm. This was the height of the industrial revolution. As Davidson notes in Project Classroom Makeover , Public Education was seen as the most efficient way to train potential workers for labor in the newly urbanized factories (197). Schools began to work like an assembly line with a focus on efficiency, attention to detail, memorization of facts and staying on task. Curriculum became standardized and states began to replace the local management of education. Critically thinking outside the box was less valued. Regardless of ability, children started school at the same age and were moved through their education in a regulated process. By the middle of the twentieth century, as the United States became a world power, the educational focus had shifted from elementary education to the attainment of high school and college degrees. A goal of education was to produce leaders. The period after WWII ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Informative Speech On Thyroid Gland Did you know that every cell of the human body has thyroid hormone receptors? They re intricately woven into the DNA. So, if you think about it, the thyroid gland basically has control of the entire body. As part of the endocrine system, the thyroid secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream, and these hormones are responsible for regulating many bodily functions. It controls the body s metabolism, protein synthesizing, energy consumption, and the functions of other vital organs. Want to know more about the thyroid? Read on to know more facts about the thyroid gland: The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland situated in the neck. It has two lobes that expand on either side. It rests against the larynx and the trachea and moves up and down ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It uses iodine to produce T4 and T3, the thyroid hormones. Iodine is found in seafood, plants grown on iodine rich soil, and iodized salt. The gland also gets its cue from the brain. The pituitary gland secretes Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and the thyroid responds to it. The thyroid is sensitive to environmental toxins. Frequent exposure to toxins like plastic compounds, pesticides, and heavy metal can cause goiter, a condition where the neck or larynx swells due to the enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid also plays a hand in controlling the calcium level in your blood. The C cells, a small group of cells located in the thyroid gland, secrete the hormone called calcitonin, which controls calcium level. The thyroid s health is dependent on a number of vitamins and minerals. Including iodine, the thyroid needs Vitamin A, Vitamin D, B Vitamins, selenium, and zinc. A well balanced diet is necessary to supply the thyroid with these vitamins and minerals. Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland is overactive. It s often caused by Graves Disease, an autoimmune disorder that stimulates the thyroid to overproduce hormones. Hyperthyroidism is characterized by tremors and increased heart rate, anxiety, restlessness, and weight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student s heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less homework is that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a day, and then goes home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that student adopt an eight eight eight schedule. This schedule being eight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn). The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too much homework making standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work (Wolchover). Many teachers ask their student to re write pages in a textbook. This just causes the student to spend time on something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect on students. It just takes up more time ( Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and Lower Grades, Studies Suggest ). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited. Studies show that a student s time is more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent s want their student to be good at many things. It is more important to be a well rounded person than to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One of the top ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Being About Our Father s Business Being About Our Father s Business Jennifer Butler PT Summer 2014 Dean Lee August 16, 2014 When looking at the three dimensions of worship, our first instinct is to put them in order of priority for ourselves. This is what I did. I remember a pastor saying once in a sermon that if your relationship with God is right, then you, your relationships, and your service/ministries will fall in line. I truly believe that. So, I believe that the most important of the three is Upward Worship. Our main purpose in life is to give God all of our praises and all of our honor. It s not about me. It s about living in God and for God. Colossians 1:16 says For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. This means that we should be about our Father and not about ourselves. This doesn t mean that on Sunday, we spend a couple of hours in church, it means that in everything we think, say, or do we do to glorify and honor God. Some examples of Upward Worship would be prayer, praise and thanksgiving, listen to his word in study and meditation. It is when we dedicate ourselves to His will and His edification that we have the security of knowing that this upward form is fulfilling. The Inward dimension of worship refers to our relationships with others. We are called to serve, and serve with humility. When we are serving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sample Literature Review On Antisocial Personality Disorder In the article The antisocial person: an insight into biology, classification and current evidence on treatment authors Rodrigo, Rajapakse, and Jayananda (2010) explored PubMed looking for published English articles between 1999 to 2009 with the search words, antisocial personality disorder, dissocial personality disorder, and psychopathy. The purpose of the literature search was to look for advances in understanding the neurobiology of violence and empathy, effective treatment modalities, and ethical implications in defining at risk individuals for preventive interventions. Data sources for this review included clinical journals, cohort studies, interventional studies, case control studies, cross sectional analysis and epidemiological studies. The search revealed a number of interesting findings, such as the different terminology used, treatment related issues, and the importance of early identification and prevention of antisocial behavior. Empathy was also a targeted area. The search examined the neurobiology of empathy and noted that the limbic system and the insula and the anterior cingulate cortex had roles in assessing emotions of self and others. Although the search uncloaked new information surrounding the topic, future research needs to be directed in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It takes a lot of effort and he almost gave up, but his motivation saved him and he was able to make this fire, even though it took almost a day. • 10. Analysis Of Rick Blain And His Internal Conflict Analysis of Rick Blain and His Internal Conflict From the audience s perspective, Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942) is a romantic drama. The scene where Rick Blaine, the lead male, is at the bar after seeing Ilsa Lund, his former lover, is the most dramatic moment in the film. The audience first sees Rick alone at the bar drinking. Sam walks in the bar and has a powerful conversation with Rick. The moment that these two characters share is dramatic because the audience is getting to see a side of Rick that hasn t been seen yet. The audience is used to seeing Rick as the perfect man. After he sees Ilsa, he breaks down, which is indicated by his heavy drinking, showing that he has a weakness. The cinematography helps show the dynamic change in Rick. The shot distance allows the audience to see Rick s facial expressions. Although Rick is seen as strong and independent, when he is reunited with Ilsa, he is drawn into a darkness that he is struggling with in the scene; it is easy to see the struggle of man vs. himself and the concept of masculinity. In this scene we see Rick in a vulnerable state after having seen Ilsa for the first time in a year. The camera shot is varied from close ups to medium long shots. When a close up is used the audience can see the emotions on Rick s face more clearly. He is burdened with memories of the past. This breaks with the idea of masculinity because the audience can clearly see that Rick is in distress. Men are burdened with social norms that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Black Lives Matter ( Blm ) Introduction Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a looselyā€coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. People feared for their lives when the thought of Gulags came up, as referenced in the book 1984, written by George Orwell. The term Gulag is a Russian acronym for Glavany Upravlenie Lagerey meaning, camp . These camps operated for two main reasons: a way to deal with prisoners and unwanted individuals; and also helped build the infrastructure by forced labor (Hayes). During Joseph Stalin s campaign the camps grew tremendously. The camps varied in size, however the largest camps were located in the most extreme regions in the country. Work was mostly manual, unskilled, and inefficient. While working in the camps, prisoners had to work for their food. The more work they did, the more food they earned. An individual who pursues these relationships can find many positive and unique aspects in developing relationships with those from other cultures. In contrast, there are those that tend to avoid people from other cultures due to preconceived ideas about certain people groups and uncertainty in communication as well as the desire to stay in their comfort zone in seeking others that are similar (Samovar pgs. 387 88). Personally, my own experience with intercultural relationships has provided for me a more balanced view of the world and the ability to look at my own culture in a whole new way. I believe in order to become more developed interculturally, it involves letting go of ethnocentrism. I discovered this was an area of struggle when I first moved abroad to China. I didn t realize that my superior cultural attitude over the host culture got in the way of developing relationships in the other culture. How much more this can play out when we are in our own culture. Furthermore, this attitude initially blocked my ability to learn not only from Chinese culture but other cultures in the international community as well. Sophocles s tragedy represents a monumental theatrical and interpretative challenge. Oedipus Rex is the story of a King of Thebes upon whom a hereditary curse is placed and who therefore has to suffer the tragic consequences of fate (tragic flaws or hamartia). In the play, Oedipus is the tragic hero. Even though fate victimizes Oedipus, he is a tragic figure since his own heroic qualities, his loyalty to Thebes, and his fidelity to the truth ruin him. The electoral college is full of issues and complications that further support the idea of it being demolished. Despite the fact that many argue the electors vote based on the popular vote of the citizens, it has been proven more than once that this is not the case. In fact, since the creation of the electoral college, electors have never been bound to their presumed party under the constitution. The book, Electoral College Primer written by Lawrence D. Longley and Neal R. Peirce offers insight on the roles and requirements of a presidential elector. The book includes a quote by Senator Benton in eighteen twenty six which reads, the elector, may give or sell his vote to the adverse candidate, in violation of all the pledges that have been taken of him. The crime is easily committed, for he votes by ballot; detection is difficult, because he does not sign it; prevention is impossible, for he cannot be coerced; the injury irreparable, for the vote cannot be vacated; legal punishment is unknown and would be inadequate... That these mischiefs have not yet happened, is no answer to an objection that they may happen. As Senator Benton explained, electors are often bound by pledges, although it wouldn t be unusual for a political figure to break a verbal promise. Since eighteen twenty six, state laws have been put in place to attempt to limit the independence of each presidential elector, which requires the electors to vote for their pledged candidate. Though some punishments for breaking the law are strict including large fines and in some states even considered a felony, this law is only observed in twenty seven states, leaving electors in twenty three states and the District of Columbia without punishment for voting against their party. Even though she is getting paid she still doesn t want to just sit down and listen to Holden talk, she s not up there to listen to a broken record. Literature would prove incomplete without a protagonist followed by an antagonist. Even the most skilled of writers, who write of beautiful skies and fields, all tied up with an abundance of similes and flowery language, will not be able to translate a story from mind to paper without the use of some characters. That is because characters create the overall conflict in a story, portraying traits and attitude that can both be considered Godly as well as the complete opposite. Normally you see in the media the typical wealthy white collar man working and making a great amount of money while they normally have a housewife sitting at home attending to the children and home. You can find this scenario showed throughout plenty of reality TV shows. In todays world those families are able to afford a chef, nanny, and cleaning lady taking on the duties of the housewife. This leaves the wife living a stress free life with access to just about anything she wants object wise. On the other hand, you see that most of the middle class marries for love and other various reasons. I can t quite speak for all due to that most middle class lives are private. • 33. The Theatre Of The Absurd Analysis The Theatre of the Absurd is a collection of plays written after World War II that were considered of having ridiculous and random ideals. Many of these plays came from Europe, including Rhinoceros by Ionesco. In Rhinoceros, the main character Berenger is a man who is not keeping up with himself and is having a midlife crisis. Everyone else in the town is living a normal life when the townspeople start to turn into rhinoceroses. With his differentness and being so out of place, he is the only one left as a human over a rhinoceros. Now that Berenger wants to be like everyone else and turn into a rhinoceros, he cannot because of his major differences. In the play, Rhinoceros, different aspects of the Theatre of the Absurd come through in the crazy storyline created by Ionesco. No communication and no logic are two of the aspects of the absurd writing concepts during this time period. One of the absurd aspects of no communication is found through the lines of the play. No communication is one of the absurdist aspects in the play Rhinoceros that reoccurs throughout the storyline. Towards the beginning of the play, the characters find that a rhinoceros is trampling through the town. The housewife finds that her cat has been trampled on by the strange creature, and is very upset. She wails to the others: It ran over my cat, it ran over my cat! (Ionesco 26). Everyone responds back to her: Poor little thing! (Ionesco 26). Even though the cat has been trampled over and is dead, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our main purpose is to understand the Security challenges faced in using DNS and better practices to reduce those. I.INTRODUCTION DNS is a protocol with some protocols for computers in exchanging data over the Internet. The process is to turn a website like google.com into an machine readable address like 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for IPv4 that computers use for identification on the network. In fact Google Public DNS is largest DNS service in the world which handles more than 400 billion requests a day. All the computers or hosts on the internet use IP Address to establish a connection with site they are need. With the DNS service, we don t need to remember the whole bunch of numbers stacked at each decimal point. We just use a DNS server and appropriate name servers and access the sites with specific names. And this DNS server manages a massive database which maps the domain names to those IP Addresses. On a short note, DNS server search for the domain name as per the User Request. This process is named as DNS name Resolution and this means DNS servers converts the domain name to IP address. As mentioned earlier, google.com has IP address of 8.8.8.8 which you enter directly into browser will give you the Google s page. Web site s IP addresses are dynamic and some sites use many IP s with only one Domain name.Without DNS servers, Internet access would be a lot tougher. Differences And Similarities Between Formula 1 And Indycar One of the most obvious examples of differences and similarities are the cars, with Formula 1 and IndyCar being similar and NASCAR being the odd one out. However, the differences and similarities go further than just the looks and the body design. Most people know that there are mechanical differences between the cars, but not many know the specifics. The Montreal Grand Prix website states, While the F1 and Indy cars feature open wheels and an open cockpit, NASCAR drivers are enclosed in a sedan styled vehicle. It s also the heaviest of the three, averaging over 3,250 lbs (1,474 kg) compared to just over 1,500 lbs (680 kg) for F1 and IndyCar. The increased weight is carried by a 5.86 liter V 8 engine, whereas the lighter F1 and Indy cars ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While they all initially use ungrooved racing tires, if it s raining, IndyCar and F1 apply grooved racing tires to overcome this challenge. In the aspect of cars, they have very few traits that they all share. Though IndyCar and F1 cars may have more similarities, NASCAR s vehicles still have their similarities to the other divisions. Other than the cars themselves, the three series have other comparable factors, such as their backstories. Each Motorsports division started in different regions. They were each started by different individuals or groups of people. According to NASCAR s website, the sport became more popular after the end of the second World War. In 1947, Bill France formed the first branch of NASCAR or the modern Monster Energy Series . Later, in the year 1982, members of NASCAR made a new series, which was given the name the Late Model Sportsman Division, which later became the XFINITY Series. There is also a third series, the Craftsman Truck Series, or the Camping World Truck Series that was formed, which uses trucks instead of cars. The NASCAR website explains how the sport started and how it expanded with the two additional series that it added. When the sport started, there was no organization. However, as time went on, and because of men like Bill France, NASCAR became an organized and popular sport. Founded in 1994, INDYCAR serves as the sanctioning body for the Verizon IndyCar Series... • 36. The Message of Hate in Babi Yar Essay The Message of Hate in Yevgeny Yevtushenko s Babi Yar There are very few people in the world who are willing to go against the popular trends and do what they feel in their hearts is correct. But Yevgeny Yevtushenko is one of those people. In his poem Babi Yar, he tells the story of the modern persecution of the Jews, focusing on atrocities like those of the massacre at Babi Yar and the pogroms at Beilostok, and also the general anti Semitism that killed men like Dreyfus and pervades the entire Russian people. The poem uses many literary devices, such as graphic imagery and contrasts, while painting a very clear picture of the scenes of pure horror. He says that he too must be a Jew for he is afraid of what his people and his society have become. Many years ago, in the ancient days, it would not be such a shock to see the Jews enslaved in Egypt or crucified as a means of torture and death, but even in modern times the same things are going on he still has the marks from where the nails pierced him. The author has used classical examples of Jewish persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how they still exist in the theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring. In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders turned their backs on him. There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word pettiness on a line by itself. This is used as a declaration of what the author feels anti Semitism is based on. It is because of pettiness that Dreyfus was accused and further because of pettiness that he was not pardoned when it was proven that he had not committed any crime. The next important device is the description of ladies with their umbrellas. This is an image to the wealthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Sir Philip Sidney and an Analysis of Six of his Poems Essay Everyone in this world starts somewhere, thousands of new beginnings each day, a new story drafted every moment. A story can be written, told by mouth, or acted out, but it is the original telling, the occurrence of such a story, which remains the most engaging and interesting, leading to the stories that will be told long after the characters are gone. With each birth a new story begins, with each achievement the plot of a story is established, and with each death a story is passed on. While traveling he viewed the massacre of St. Bartholomew s Day, an extremely gory group of assassinations that resulted in many deaths, resulting in the reinforcement of his protestant beliefs. After returning from his adventures through Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris and Venice, he was recalled to court by the Queen. He joined court upon his homecoming in 1575, and later became known as one of the ideal gentlemen of the time period, his chivalrous manner and personality that of the perfect courtier. He was a great favorite and became greatly respected in his position. In 1576 Sidney succeeded his father as cupbearer to Queen Elizabeth, which was a purely ceremonial duty, and a year later the Queen gave him a diplomatic mission of traveling to the German Emperor and the Prince of Orange to present Elizabeth s condolences on the death of their fathers. He was to find out if they would be open to the formation of a Protestant alliance against Catholic Spain. This mission as a diplomat was not as successful as he had hoped because he came back far more hopeful and optimistic than the other diplomats, and the Queen was not as confident in his reply as in the replies from other representatives. Philip continued in politics and entertained foreign visitors and diplomats. Philip was quite intelligent, and was able to discuss chemistry, science, art, literature, poetry, law, religion, history, politics and military with ease. In 1579 Sir Philip Sidney ... This has caused delay in meeting business targets in the past. Cross cultural team members also face a challenge of having to understand that other team members possibly have a different idea of how to treat their bosses. Drawing from the example of my job team at work, I noticed that my American team members do not really run their ideas through our team leader before taking actions. However, my Turkish boss does not like this as he comes from a culture where everything a subordinate does should be run through the boss for approval. This had caused strains in the team s effectiveness in the past; until my American team members adapted to fit our team leader s wishes. Since location information may private information, preserving location privacy has become a signiļ¬cant issue. Previously studied methods to preserve a users privacy; physical constraints are not taken in consideration for most of them. In this paper, we constantly focus on such constraints and purpose of a location privacy preservation method which can be applicable to a real environment. In particular, our method anonymizes the user s location which generates dummies which we simulate to behave like an real human. The model also considers traceability of the user s locations which can quickly recover from an accidental reveal of the user s location. The splitting efficiency at its bends has been improved by encapsulating rectangular defect, thereby increasing the power transmission of about 98.1%. A simple antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW B) is a polarization insensitive wave guiding, which utilizes antiresonance reflection and provides better coupling when compared with conventional wave guiding. We performed three dimensional finite difference time domain (3 D FDTD) simulation to calculate the power transmission of Y splitter with ARROW B which is about 93.3%. The PC thus designed can provides good sharp bend ability and power split ability. Index Terms Power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Light propagation in photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is possible in terms of artificially induced defect region [3], However, by incorporating defects in the waveguide, certain wavelengths belong to the band gap can propagate strictly within the defects. The defects can be in the form of line defects to achieve photonic crystal waveguides or point defects producing optical cavities. We have presented an efficient power splitter, which divides the propagating optical power equally between the two branching line defects. Whereas, an important crisis in power splitter is that how light get efficiently transmitted via the bend corners. For that various methods have been proposed i. Providing row of pores with smaller diameter ii. Coupled cavity design and iii. Three pore rows wide defect [2]. Although these techniques can significantly increase the splitting efficiency, complicated time consuming computation is needed, consequently an alternate method is proposed to improve the power split ability by incorporating rectangular capsule shaped defect at its bends [4]. These defects with higher refractive index contrast provide better reflection as compared to that of other methods mentioned. Besides the main source of propagation losses in 2D PCW has been believed to be the guided modes position above the light line, since modes above the light line can easily ...
