What Research Methodology Is?
Meaning and Definition:
Middle French recerche, from recercher to go about seeking, from Old French recerchier,
from re- + cerchier, sercher to search(“Research Definition & Meaning”) Methodology is a
body of methods, rules, and postulates employed by a discipline: a particular procedure or set
of procedures, and the analysis of the principles or procedures of inquiry in a particular field.
(“Methodology Definition & Meaning”)
The methodology employed in an experiment is essential to its success, and bad methodology
has spoiled thousands of research projects. So whenever a piece of research is published in a
scientific or medical journal, the researchers always carefully describe their methodology;
otherwise, other scientists couldn't possibly judge the quality of what they've done.

In the practical sense of doing, research matter of techniques, An event occurs or is
made to happen by the and some record of the event occurs or is made. Careful study
of the generates factual statements serviceable as evidence for inferences
generalizations, explanations, interpretations, predictions and dec search technique is
the process of converting events into records an into factual statements (including
tables, charts and other ways relationships).(Gowin, D)
It guides the researcher in deciding what type of data is required for a study and
which data collection tools will be most appropriate for the purpose of his/her study.
It is the methodological question that leads the researcher to ask how the world
should be studied.
Significance of Methodology in research
Guides the Research Process: Methodology provides a systematic framework for conducting research. It outlines the steps to be
taken, the techniques to be used, and the overall approach to be followed.
Ensures Validity and Reliability: A robust methodology ensures that the research findings are valid and reliable. Validity refers
to the accuracy of the research results in measuring what they are intended to measure, while reliability refers to the
consistency of the results over time and across different contexts.
Minimizes Bias: Methodology helps researchers minimize bias in their study by providing strategies for data collection, analysis,
and interpretation that reduce the influence of personal opinions, prejudices, or other subjective factors.
Allows Replication: A clear methodology enables other researchers to replicate the study, verifying its findings and contributing
to the cumulative nature of scientific knowledge.
Facilitates Generalization: By employing appropriate sampling techniques and data analysis methods, research methodology
enables researchers to draw generalizable conclusions from their findings, extending the applicability of the results beyond the
specific context of the study.
Enhances Ethical Considerations: Methodology often includes guidelines for ethical conduct in research, ensuring that studies
are conducted in an ethical manner, with due consideration for the rights and welfare of participants.
Optimizes Resource Utilization: Effective methodology helps researchers optimize the use of resources such as time, money, and
personnel by providing clear direction and minimizing unnecessary efforts.
Informs Decision-Making: Research findings often inform decision-making processes in various fields. A sound methodology
ensures that these decisions are based on reliable evidence and valid conclusions.

In the theoretical sense of reasoning, research is a matter of using concepts, conceptual
systems, constructs, models, theories, etc. An event can be studied effectively if the
researcher generates a telling question. Such questions require key concepts or
generative ideas which lead and guide the inquiry. Facts without concepts are blind and
concepts without facts are empty too. Research brings together conceptual systems and
techniques.
Gage (1964) identified three aspects of the research paradigm: the substantive, the methodological,
and the logistical. Gage's second category is the methodological, in which he included ways of
measuring variables and of collecting and analyzing data. We prefer to call this category methods of
work because, as noted in the Foreword to this volume, we reserve the term methodology for the
study of methods.(Gowin, D)
Knowledge endorsed by those in power (politically or educationally) is to be viewed critically. The
rules that legitimize some bodies of knowledge and delegitimize others should be questioned(Rehman
and Alharthi)
Research Methods
1. Oral History: Oral history offers several benefits to the discipline of English. Interviews with literary
authors, as well as recordings of personal experiences of cultural phenomena such as theatre-going and
reading(Griffin).
Visual Methodologies: Visual images have been the object of study for a variety of disciplines for as long as those
disciplines have existed. They include art history in the humanities, most obviously, but also, within the social
sciences, the sub-disciplines of visual anthropology and visual sociology(Griffin).
Discourse Analysis: Discourse analysis is concerned with the investigation of language, both written and oral, as it
is actually used (as opposed to an abstract system or structure of language). It is different from textual analysis
(Griffin).
The Uses of Ethnographic Methods: In academia, ethnography as a research methodology is typically associated
with the social sciences, most usually, although not exclusively, with the discipline of anthropology. It is chiefly a
qualitative research strategy that relies primarily on participant observation and concerns itself in its most general
sense with the study and interpretation of cultural behaviour.(Griffin).
Continue…
Textual Analysis: Textual analysis is indispensable to research in cultural criticism, where cultural criticism
includes English, cultural history and cultural studies, as well as any other discipline that focuses on texts, or
seeks to understand the inscription of culture in its artefacts.(Griffin).
Interviewing: Interviewing is a vital research methodology due to its capacity to delve deeply into participants'
perspectives, providing rich, qualitative data that offers nuanced insights into complex phenomena. Its flexibility
allows for tailored questioning and adaptation, fostering rapport and empowering participants to share their
experiences authentically. Interviews not only generate detailed narratives but also enable researchers to explore
contextual influences, validate findings, and capture diverse viewpoints within populations.
Creative Writing: Through poetry, fiction, or other literary forms, researchers can evoke empathy, provoke
thought, and illuminate truths that might otherwise remain hidden. This approach not only enriches the research
process but also engages diverse audiences, fostering dialogue, empathy, and deeper connections between
researchers and participants. Creative writing as a research method thus offers a transformative means of
generating knowledge, challenging assumptions, and fostering innovation across disciplines.
Continue..
Digital Humanities as a Research Method: Digital humanities as a research method integrates
computational tools and techniques with traditional humanities disciplines to analyze, interpret, and
communicate cultural artifacts, texts, and phenomena in innovative ways. By leveraging digital technologies
such as data visualization, text mining, and computational analysis, researchers can explore vast amounts of
data, uncover patterns, and gain new insights into human culture, history, and literature. Digital humanities
methodologies facilitate collaborative research, interdisciplinary inquiry, and public engagement,
democratizing access to knowledge and fostering inclusivity within academic and cultural spheres.
As you continue to read, reread, and think about the ideas and information you have decided to use, you will
begin to see new connections between items, and patterns of organization will suggest themselves. Bring
related material together under general headings, and arrange these sections so that one logically connects
with another. Then order the subjects under each heading so that they, too, proceed logically.(Nicholls 65)
Conclusion
Research methodology holds paramount significance in the pursuit of knowledge across all
fields and disciplines. By providing a structured framework for inquiry, methodology
ensures the validity, reliability, and ethical integrity of research endeavors. It guides
researchers in the systematic exploration of complex phenomena, facilitating the
generation of new insights and the advancement of understanding. Moreover,
methodology enables the replication and verification of research findings, fostering the
cumulative growth of knowledge over time. Whether employing traditional methods like
interviews and surveys or embracing innovative approaches such as digital humanities or
creative writing, the careful consideration of methodology is essential for producing
rigorous and impactful research outcomes. Ultimately, by understanding and appreciating
the importance of research methodology, scholars can uphold the integrity of their work
and contribute meaningfully to the collective body of human knowledge.
