Deconstructions.
The four films I deconstructed, are as
follows: Halloween 4: The Return of Michael
Myers, House on Haunted Hill, Saw 5,
Bereavement.
The theme of each film, is that someone is in
danger.
The beginning of all four deconstructions
pose a threat to someone or something.
What do the films have in
common?
All four 2 ,minute deconstructions have the
theme of a possible threat or danger
towards characters and all manage to
build tension throughout the scene.
For example in Saw V, there is a shot if the
whole room to show the dark horrible
conditions of the whereabouts of the man
strapped to the bed. The scene manages
to create tension as some one would never
be in that type of situation.
What do the films have in
common? (Continued)
This is similar to the film bereavement. As a
dark mysterious man is seen walking from a
run down building to a beaten down car,
this gives the impression that this man is
either dangerous or the story is likely to be
involving him.
Also when he is following the young boy,
there is a sense that he should not be doing
that, which makes the viewer feel very
tense and uncomfortable.
What do the films have in
common? (Continued)
Halloween 4 manages to make the first
scene tense. Although no people are seen
it is clear that the objects that are in the
scene may pose a threat to people who
either live n the farm or visit the farm.
House on haunted hill, suggests even from
the establishing shot that the while building
may be dangerous, the screams that can
be heard easily put the viewer into a tense
uneasy situation.
What is established in the first 2
minutes?
The genre of the film is established from the
very first two minutes, also the possibility of
danger towards characters. The setting of
all four films are set.
For example in Saw V, the man strapped to
the table is not a regular occurrence. This
situation is clearly dangerous due to the
condition of the room that he is locked in.
The setting of the scene is set when we see
the door of the old factory room.
What is established?
(Continued)
Also the man in bereavement looks
dangerous, mainly because of the building
he is emerging from. When he is stalking the
little boy this is obviously not a normal thing
to do as the sound accompanies the shot,
this easily makes the viewer very
uncomfortable. The scene is set when we
see the man walking from the run down
building.
Halloween 4, Shows a long shot of a farm,
this may suggest that something bad is going
to happen on the farm, because it is so
secluded.
The different shots of the farm helps to set the
scene as we know that the items such as the
barbed wire in the empty barn and the
metal tools, make the viewer think that
something bad is going to happen.

In the film, House on Haunted Hill we can
see that the patients of the hospital escape,
this then leads the viewer to believe that
the film is going to be based on what
happened in the hospital.
The scene of the film is set. We know that it
is on the cliff face of the sea, this is due to
the establishing shot showing what looks like
a building emerging from the side of the
cliff.
Similarities in the 4 technical
codes?
There are some similarities used in the four
deconstructions that use the technical
codes.
In all of the films, there is a building non
diagetic sound of screeching growing in the
background.
Saw V and Halloween 4, share the same
sound of metal scraping against each
other. This is shown in the credits of Saw V,
as a red light shines across the writing. This is
shown in Halloween 4, when the metal tools
are shown.
Similarities in the 4 technical
codes? (Continued)
The films use long shots to portray the vast
area that the film is set in. This is used in
House on Haunted Hill, to show the hospital
on the cliff. In Halloween 4, when there is a
long shot of the farm. In Bereavement when
the old building is shown. Also in Saw V,
when the building is shown from outside.
There are often jump cuts used to help
show the area in which the scene is set.
Panning the camera is also used to build
the tension of the shots, when showing
something.
