Textual Analysis of a Teaser Trailer
The Teaser Trailer
Shot 1
Mise En Scene-
■ Here the setting is suggested to be a very dull place due to the lighting used however we
still do not know the time setting or any of the characters.
Editing-
■ Fade in to the shot also accompanies by the fade in of the text which gives the audience
an idea of other peoples opinions of the film "Best Film" gives very high expectations for
the film.
Camerawork-
■ A still longshot is used to concentrate on the person who is walking in the background.
This shot is used to focus on the text which has appeared.
Sound-
■ Non-diegetic soundtrack is played over any audio this is to create a very calm atmosphere
due to the acoustic music which is used.
Text-
■ The text used within this shot uses a bold black border on the text/ design to emphasize
the text which has appeared drawing the audiences attention away from the longshot in
the background.
Shot 2
Editing-
■ This shot is edited in to give information and the narrative of the film it also
gives the audience an insight into the plot of the film by giving us the main
characters first name. When the text appears onscreen it seems to be in a
typewriter style.
Camerawork-
■ No camerawork is used here as it is a title and a blank screen.
Sound-
■ The same nondiegetic acoustic sound runs over any audio.
Text-
■ The text here is in a similar font to a newsprint this connects to the time frame
of the film which was revealed in a similar shot a few seconds before. By using
this text with the torn effect around it which creates the tone that the fil, will be
youthful instead of aged.
Shot 3
Mise En Scene-
■ The costumes which are used in this shot emphasize and establish the era of the film during the
1980's such as the shaved head and the shirts. The setting of this shot appears to be in a tunnel
however we can gather that the location is in a much more lower class area. The only props used
within this shot are the beer cans which are a connotation of youth and a lower class area.
Editing-
■ Basic montage editing is used here to highlight the journey of 'Shaun' and his journey to find
friends. There is some slight continuity to emphasize the coming of age theme which the film
uses.
Camerawork-
■ A longshot is used here to show a range of characters who are being introduced in this shot as
'Shaun's' friends. This shot is also still to concentrate on the dialogue between the characters.
Sound-
■ The diegetic dialogue between the characters suggests a relationship which shall be built
throughout the film as the young boy seems to be accepted by the others. "main man milky' the
camerawork links to this as the shot after follows with this character in the shot.
Shot 4
Mise En Scene-
■ This shot yet again establishes the stetting of the film which appears to represent the lower class
of England during the 1980's . This is displayed through the setting in an estate which are a
connotation of the lower class. Similarly, the lighting is natural to create realism to the shot to
create a relatable topic which represents the youth of the time setting. Yet again the costumes
represent the 'skinhead' culture which was adopted in the 1980's.
Editing-
■ This shot uses the montage style for this teaser trailer to portray the growth of 'Shaun's'
character which is displayed throughout the trailer. A slightly slow motion shot also used here to
emphasize the fun that the group of friends are having which highlights the theme of a Coming of
Age Drama.
Camerawork-
■ A high angle shot is used to fit all of the characters within this shot this introduces the audience
to the wide range of people and personalities which are portrayed in the teaser trailer.
Sound-
• Here a non-diegetic soundtrack in the style of 'ska' music is played over any audio to emphasize
the generation the film was set.
Shot 5
Mise En Scene-
■ Here we are introduced to what the audience have to assume to be the 'villain' of the film this is
suggested through his face Tattoos and his costume which also links to the "skinhead" culture
of the time. However due to the characters NVC we are able to assume that he has high
authority even though he is crouching down to speak to Shaun, this could be seen as a very
patronizing position which is supported through his dialogue.
Editing-
■ The montage editing at this point slows down and continuity is shown here as we are
introduced to this new character who has a large amount of screen time.
Camerawork-
■ A close up shot of the male encourages the audience to feel intimidated by him it also
emphasizes the facial expression which he has this also highlights his power within this group
of people to yet again display his intimidating personality.
Sound-
■ A more intimidating rock style of soundtrack is played non diegetically here to intensify this
scene to build tension and uncertainty for what is to follow after this character is introduced.
Dialogue is used here to emphasize the characters uncertainty and threat that he could cause
by asking Shaun 'you a proper little skin head yeah?" This is a patronizing tone towards Shaun
who answers "yeah" due to his naivety and is followed by a laugh from the unnamed man. This
here highlights the age difference between Shaun and his new found friends which could spark
a problem later in the film.
Shot 6
Mise En Scene-
• This scene emphasizes the racial controversy of this film, the location of this shot is again in an
alley on an estate to show the "rough" culture this community are in. And the contrast of the
clothing also suggests at cultural divide between innocent and intimidating. The NVC uses a stern
stare on the male to cause authority with the young boys and the audience revealing his true
intentions.
Editing-
• The editing yet again uses continuity montages to use a teaser style of trailer where there are a
lot of shots in a short space of time to build suspense and create a cliffhanger plot.
Camerawork-
• The camera work here uses a close up shot of two people with a selective focus on the white male
who appears to be the intimidation I this shot. We are focused on him to create an anonymousness
to the other male and his peers, we are also meant to focus on the white males actions to feel
further intimidation and dislike towards him due to this views.
Sound-
• Here a sound bridge is used from the previous scene where the audio of the white male saying "if
I see you on my streets again ill slash ya" this emphasizes the intense atmosphere and shock that
his man is saying these terms to a child. The accent of the male as well highlights the regional
identity of being from the north of England where it is stereotypically known about conflict between
the "skinheads" and other communities.
Shot 7
Mise En Scene-
Here the costumes and styling of the characters here are very contrasting to the past styles of the "skinhead" style,
this is due to the age range of the characters to are starred. The NVC of this shot captures the intimidating persona
the men portray this is emphasized through the style of walking which suggests confidence and authority within this
community. Similarly, Shaun's position in this shot also emphasizes his age and how he is much younger than the
other people highlighting how he is only young and should not be placed within this situation as he is still very naïve.
Editing-
The montage style teaser trailer is continued within this shot however the clip is slightly slowed down to emphasize
the characters authority in the film.
Camerawork-
This shot uses a longshot of the group of people to cause intimidation and show the popular views which were
evident during the time setting of the film. The straight on camera position allows the people within the shot to be
walking towards the camera to place the audience into the situation.
Sound-
A classical dramatic non diegetic soundtrack is played in conjunction with the shot which is a contrast to the shot
content that represents a controversial subject.
Text-
The graphics which appear on the screen here are used to emphasize the rewards and recondition this film has
received to contact the audience to prove that they should watch the film.
Shot 8
Mise En Scene-
The setting of this shot uses a concrete urban area to further highlight the culture and lifestyle these
characters have creating the typical connotation of the northern culture in the UK. The reflection of the
water in the shot is used to illustrate the reflection on peoples lives which occur due to their actions at
their age. NVC, they are throwing stones into the water which is known as a childish action this could
be a connotation of youth and frustration.
Editing-
The editing in this scene yet again uses continuity in a montage style for the general conventions of a
teaser trailer.
Camerawork-
An extreme longshot is obtained here to illustrate the size of the group of people and emphasize the
theme of youth and growth within this part of life which is also suggested through the NVC.
Sound-
The same non-diegetic classical soundtrack is played to create emotion and emphasize the drama of
this film. However, this shot is contrapuntal to the soundtrack as this action should be followed with a
happier emotion soundtrack.
Text-
The text here uses the similar style of a newspaper to create a "grungy" style to the text which is used
to suggest how the film is recognized by a range of well renowned film and media sources.
Shot 9
Mise En Scene-
The setting of this shot is not obvious however we an assume it is not in a very attractive area due to the floor
which appears to be dirty and full of rubbish this suggest the flow of the use of an urban area for the films
location. Similarly, "Shaun's" costume is also not shown but we are given an insight into his inner emotions
through his NVC facial expressions as he addresses the camera for the first time by glancing into the lens,
which communicates with the audience who will be able to gather his cry for help due to his naivety.
Editing-
The editing here uses a shot cut to create an emphasis on this shot and the emotions which are present.
Camerawork-
A hand held camera shot is used here to create a organic atmosphere and to create a connection to Shaun's
emotions as a close up shot is used to bring us close to a person who appears to be in need of help. A
selective focus is also used here to focus on his emotions and create a focal point within the shot.
Sound-
The classical non-diegetic soundtrack is played again which for one connects with the shot due to the
emotions which are suggested,
Text-
The films title is revealed for the first time to confirm the location of the film and the context which is
highlighted through the stigma of this time. The colors of the British flag are used here to suggest a sense of
patriotism and to connect to the films promotional style and continuity.
