PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS: AN EMPIRICAL STUD...IAEME Publication
There is need to increase the quality in the higher educational institutions. Quality
is the key parameter of discussion among HEIs and essential in competitive era. Every
institution has to perform its role effectively and survival of it is depending on the
capability to attract and retain the stakeholders, with recognition and reputation. The
present study has extracted seven factors by using exploratory factor analysis on
student’s perception. These factors are Digitization of Academic Awards, Campus
Placement, Extracurricular Activities, Infrastructure and Resources, Seminar and
Industrial Visits, Teaching Skills and Students Support System which will be useful for
the educational planners and the administrators in designing a more effective system
that can be valuable to improve the overall productivity of academics in higher
education. Therefore, this research has emphasized that government need to
concentrate on improving the enrollment of the students under NAD and a proper
focus will have to be given on policies and strategies to appoint high quality faculty by
the academicians.
An Analysis of Factors That Contribute To Low Student Success and Retention i...iosrjce
This study aimed at analysing the factors that contribute to low student success and retention in open
and distance learning (ODL) institutions. The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU), Mashonaland East Regional
Centre was purposively selected for the study which adopted the case study design in order to provide a detailed
empirical investigation of the problem of retention rates in ZOU. The study employed the qualitative research
methodology. Data were gathered through focus group discussions, questionnaires and in-depth interviews to
enable data triangulation. The target population was 650 students who all took part in the survey. These were
drawn from all the four faculties of the University at the Mashonaland East Regional Centre. The study revealed
that student enrolment statistics at the ZOU - Mashonaland East Regional Centre experienced the worst decline
(40%) in 2009 between the first and second semester due to socio-economic and political challenges prevailing
in the country. The rate of decline in enrolment varied according to programmes. Also the participation of
women (44%) in distance education as compared to men (56%) at Mashonaland East Regional Centre was a
cause for concern. Financial challenges caused by low salaries and unfriendly fees policy was cited by almost
92% of the respondents as the major cause of student dropout. Institutional – related factors such as tutoring,
communication, library services and fees policy were said to be significantly contributing to student dropout.
The study made a number of recommendations among which were that ZOU needs to improve the quality and
effectiveness of student support services in the following areas: management of assignments, delivery of
tutorials, distribution of study materials, and publication of examinations. Tutorial time per module should be
increased (12 tutorial hours per module). ZOU should consider the advantages of the Block release method of
delivery as opposed to tutorials. Student queries, of whatever nature, must be addressed promptly and
effectively. It is also important for ZOU to create a billing system that will allow for some flexibility in fees
payment. An example would be allowing students to set up a payment plan. ZOU must adopt policies and
procedures that address the special needs of distance education students since distance education encompasses
a broad range of age groups.

Assessment and Evaluation System in Engineering Education of UG Programmes at...ijtsrd
Assessment is one of the most critical dimensions in engineering education process it focuses not only on identifying how many of the predefined education goals and objectives outcomes have been achieved but also works as a feedback component for educators to upgrade their teaching practices. The assessment can be seen as a link that it forms with other education processes. Lamprianou et al. 2009 point out that assessment is associated with the educational objectives of "evaluation, diagnosis, guidance, selection, placement, administration, prediction or grading. Assessment is one main factors that contribute to a high quality teaching and learning environment and student's performance as whole. It also makes clearer what teachers expect from students Biggs et al., 1999 . The perceived difficulty in this process is how assessment system, approaches and schemes can be standardized and adapted across the premier institutes NITs of in the country. Credit system has been used widely by many HEIs in India for over 20 years but no nationally agreed and rationalized framework of credit and Credit Transfer and Accumulation System is developed. The purpose of the literature review is to outline research studies in the assessment and evaluation systems being practicedand to highlight the studies that can be used in the research project undertaken. Specifically, the literature review attempts to address the following research questions What researches are undertaken nationally and internationally into the assessment system in higher education, especially engineering education What are the key findings from these researches What are the limits delimitations of these researches Are there research findings could be applied to engineering education at UG in NITs in India Are there any prime concern for future research in this area From this literature review, it is apparent that a very few number of studies have been conducted in higher education institutions but no research was found in the context of Engineering Education specific to UG programmes and NITs. However, many innovations are on the way to improvise the assessment and evaluation mechanisms in the engineering education especially in the context of Outcome Based Education OBE . J. P. Academic students’ satisfaction and learning outcomes in a HyFlex course: do ...Sawsen Lakhal
The Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex) design model is a course design model that combines Hybrid learning in a Flexible way, such that students can either attend face-to-face class sessions, participate online or do both (i.e. alternate between face-to-face mode and online mode), according to their needs and availability, without learning deficits. Student satisfaction and learning outcomes (i.e. academic performance) should be the same regardless of the mode they choose. The aim of this study is to address these issues. A total of 376 students enrolled in a HyFlex information systems course responded to an online questionnaire. One-way ANOVA tests results revealed that no significant differences were found between students who chose different delivery modes on satisfaction, multiple choice test, and written exam scores. However, significant differences were observed on continuous assessment scores. The discussion relates to the importance of conducting other studies on this particular design model.

This document summarizes a study that examined factors affecting student academic performance, including teaching method, choice of discipline, and student-lecturer relationship. The study analyzed data from 192 students in Nigeria on their course of study, effort level, and relationship with lecturers. The results showed that choice of discipline influenced by university authority rather than passion was negatively associated with student GPA. Additionally, student GPA increased as the rapport between students and lecturers improved. Some students who put in high effort performed worse than less studying students, possibly due to rushed lectures or lack of learning resources. The study concluded teaching methods should maintain good student-lecturer relationships while preventing moral hazard of passing without effort.

J. P. Effect of teaching method, choice of discipline and student lecturer relation...Alexander Decker
The document discusses high turnover rates in the hospitality industry and how this negatively impacts productivity and profits. It argues that traditional resumes are ineffective for evaluating service industry candidates because they do not assess interpersonal skills or "hospitality quotient," which are most important. The document cites Danny Meyer's emphasis on hiring employees with strong emotional intelligence over technical skills alone. It concludes that new recruiting technologies should assess personality and qualifications beyond resumes to improve hiring and reduce turnover in the hospitality sector.

LITERATURE REVIEW:
Joseph Sia Kee Ming has prepared a research paper on title, “Institutional Factors Influencing Students’ College
Choice Decision in Malaysia: A Conceptual Framework” Intense competition in the higher education sector in
Malaysia has forced many universities to become “entrepreneurs” and implement marketing strategies in
recruiting students both locally and abroad. The objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework to
explore the institution factors that influence students‟ college choice decision in Malaysia. The independent
variables that have been identified to have influenced of students‟ college choice decision are location,
academic programme, college reputation, educational facilities, cost, availability of financial aid, employment
opportunities, and advertising, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), representatives and campus visit.
A study on tile, “Factors Influencing Students’ College Choice at Traditional and Metropolitan Universities”
was prepared by Emad M. Wajeeh & Ted Micceri. The college choice is a decision influenced by a number of
demographic, economic, social, political, and institutional factors. Different types of students chose to attend
certain universities on the basis of one or more factors that link directly to their characteristics and needs. Major
factors cited in the literature to influence college choice are: the advice of parents, academic reputation of the
institution, availability of the desired program, availability of financial aid, cost of attending the institution, and
the location of the institution. However, the relative importance of these factors is largely determined by the
characteristics of the student and the types of the university (metropolitan or traditional).
A research was carried out by John G. Cannon, John H. Hillison, Thomas W. Broyles & Virginia Tech on title,
“Factors influencing Gifted and Talented Students’ College Decisions” The agricultural industry is much
different than it was 50 or even 20 years ago. Advances in science and technology have made production more
efficient, requiring fewer workers. Nevertheless, a steady supply of well-trained and highly-educated
professionals will be needed to meet the complex demands of modern American agriculture (Betts & Newcomb,
1986; Edwards, Leising, & Parr, 2002). Many careers in agriculture require knowledge and skills in science and
math (Shelley-Tolbert, Conroy, & Dailey, 2000), offer high salaries, and appear in profitable sectors such as
food processing and agricultural finance. Gifted and talented students potentially have the skills to meet the
demands of the agricultural job market.
An Exploratory Study of Factors influencing the decision of students to study at University sains Malaysia was
prepared by Jacqueline Liza Fernandez. The higher education sector in Malaysia includes public and private
tertiary institutions. Malaysian institutions of higher learning are facing a host of challenges, including a high
degree of competition among institutions due to the emergence of new colleges and universities, reduced
funding from the government, and the need to upgrade education services continuously to meet the demands of
the market. This study examines: (i) the reasons students pursue higher education; (ii) sources of information
used by students to help choose a tertiary institution; (iii) factors that influence students' choices of public
versus private institutions; and (iv) the factors that influence students' decisions to study at USM. The results of
this study indicate that the main reasons that students pursue higher education are to improve their job prospects
and to gain knowledge and experience.
A study on title, “Factors that Affect Students’ Decision to Take Distance Learning Courses: A Survey Study of
Technical College Students in Taiwan was done by Shiao-Chuan Kung. Distance learning courses provide
alternative methods to acquire knowledge outside traditional classroom settings. One problem in the
development of distance learning programs in Taiwan is that they are driven by technology rather than
educational need. Technical college students‟ response to an online survey revealed subject matter as the most
important factor affecting their decision to take a distance learning course. Female students were found to give
more importance to cost reputation of the school and time flexibility. Students who work full time gave more
importance to the reputation of the school and the instructor. These findings serve to guide policy decisions for
institutions seeking to address the needs and concerns of the studied population.

The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sampling Adequacy for the various Attributes categories measured is
0.687., which indicates the scale is appropriate and helps in extracting the factor. The ideal measure for this test
(KMO>0.50) and here in this case KMO is 0.687 indicates the variables are measuring a common factor. Again
Bartlett’s test of spherecity indicated the inter-correlation matrix is factorable and inter-correlation matrix come
from a population in which the variables are non-collinear.
Support from the financial institute and Boyfriend/Girlfriend have lower co-relationship among all variables. It
is clear from the factor analysis that Selection of Institute is more affected by Family and Friend while
objective of the student is also have impact on selection decision. Three factors are clearly promising from the
above table, (1) Family & Friends Suggestion (2) Objective of Student (3) Status of family. As rotated
component matrix shows, Friends suggestion and Self Motivations of the student have higher correlation among
all the variables. Support from the financial institute and Boyfriend/Girlfriend have lower co-relationship
among all variables.

HYPOTHESIS TESTING:
(1) Ho: There is no significant difference between specialization offered and education background of the
student in the selection of institute.
H1: There is significant difference between Specialization Offered and Education Background of the
student in the selection of the institute.
Here the f calculated value is greater than f table value i.e. 2.95 > 2.53. So here we reject ho i.e. there is
significant difference between specialization Offered and Education Background of the student in the selection
of the institute.
(2) Ho: There is no significant difference between Fee Structure and Family Income of
student in selection of institute.
H1: There is significant difference between Fee Structure and Family Income of student
in selection of institute.
Here the F calculated Value is less than F table Value i.e. 2.13 < 2.75 so here we fail to reject Ho i.e. there is no
significant difference between Fee Structure and Family Income of the student in the selection of the institute.
CONCLUSION:
While selecting the institute, placement activities done by the college is the most influencing factor among all
the placement related factors. Extra co-curricular activities don’t have that much influence at the time of
selection of the institute. Among all the infrastructure related factors, computer lab facility is the most
influencing factor at the time of selection of the institute. Positive word of mouth is one of most influencing
factor in the selection of the institute. Suggestion from friends and family have also influence on the selection
decision. Career goal of the students is also one of the influencing factors in the selection of the institute.
Experience of the faculty is the most influencing factor among the faculty related factors. Guidance from the
counselor can also influence the selection of the institute. Specialization offered and course provided by the
college are the most influencing factor among all the academics related factors. Practical knowledge is one of
the most influencing factors at the time of selection of the institute. Placement record has the most influence on
the student. Brand name of the college also matters a lot while selecting the college. Geographic location and
infrastructure have more influence on the student at the time of selection of the institute.
