The document provides a summary of a 7-day training on semi-skilled carpentry and masonry held in November 2016 in Dolakha, Nepal. It was organized by HURADEC Nepal and Christian Aid to develop skills for earthquake-resistant construction. 24 participants from the local area attended. Over the week, participants received both classroom instruction and hands-on practice in techniques like layout, stone masonry, reinforcement, and joints. By the end, participants gained knowledge to help with reconstruction and design earthquake-resistant rural buildings according to government guidelines.

Introduction
Nepal as disaster prone country, floods, landslides, epidemics and fires cause considerable loss
of life and property every year. Though earthquake is not a frequent parameter but has high
potential for causing severe damage. Past record of earthquakes have shown that Nepal can
expect atleast one major earthquake of magnitude around 8 Richter scale every eighty years. Not
many people in Nepal realize that they are living in the high risk zone, so the importance of
earthquake resistance building was not of great concern till major earthquake strike Nepal on 25,
26 April and 10 May 2015. To minimize risk of loss of lives and property due to earthquake, it
is necessary to create awareness to build earthquake resistance building, simultaneously it is
equally required to developed skilled manpower for the reconstruction of the damaged structures
during the earthquake in the remote and rural areas of Nepal. To fulfill this need HURADEC
Nepal in support with Christian Aid, Dolakha organized the semi-skilled carpenters and
mason training for rural masons to enhance them for making the seismically resistant
structures. The technical support for the training was provided from Dolakha Multi-Sectoral
Training Institute (DMSTI). The course followed was as per the syllabus designed by DUDBC.
The syllabus provided by DUDBC is provided in Appendix A.
1.0 Training outline
HURADEC Nepal in support with Christian Aid, Dolakha organized a 7 days semi-skilled
Carpenters and Mason Training to enhance the manpower needed for the design of seismically
resistance structures, on Himalaya Secondary School Dhakrebot-9 Chilakha VDC, Dolakha. The
training was facilitated by Dolakha Multi-Sectoral Training Institute (DMSTI). Total 24
participants attended the training program.
2.0 Objective and Purpose of the Training Program
The principal aim of the training was to create suitable manpower to build seismically resistant
rural buildings. Also the course was designed to create the trainers who can give practical
training to the rural masons in the field.

3.0 Time Duration
The duration of training was 7days. The training started from 10:30 AM and ended at 4:30 PM.
4.0 Participants
There was heterogeneous group of participants. Out of 24 participants, 6 were Dalit, 7 were
Janajati and 11 were Chhetri. Among 24 participants non of them are female and there age was
around fifty. The list of all the participants is attached in Appendix B.
5.0 Resource Persons
The technical assistance was provided by Dolakha Multi-Sectoral Training Institute (DMSTI).
The responsibilities of the resource persons were to guide the participants and also to assist in the
laboratory/field work. The list of resource persons is attached in Appendix C.
6.0 Training Proceedings
The training contained 14 hours of theory class 17 practical class. Also every day class started
with the discussion of the previous day work. One hours was allotted in the inaugural day for the
welcome and expectation collection of the participants. Similarly One hours on the last day was
utilized for the closing ceremony. The following sections give the day to day activity held during
the training according to Ram Bdr. Bayalkoti (participant of mason training).
Day 1: November 6, 2016
Social Mobilizer of HURADEC Nepal gave the welcome speech. It was attended by 24
participants and all the resource persons of DMSTI. After the short inaugural speech there was
introduction program between the participants and trainers. The areas of interest and the
expectation of the participants was also discussed shortly.
Then the theory class was conducted. The first lecture was given about the basic concept of
Earthquake. Similarly the precautions before, during and after the earthquake was also discussed.
One hour session was followed by the distribution of stationary material, helmet and safety night
reflective jacket/vest. Then discussed about the considerations made in the mud mortar, cement
mortar, stone masonry, brick masonry, wooden band and RC slab.

Day 2: November 7, 2016
On second day participants explained briefly about the previous day activities. Then was given
about the concept of foundation design, site selection and building construction. Then the
process for making the layout of the building and soil test was also discussed. It was followed by
another lecture class about the methods to access the quality of the construction work. After both
the lectures were over the layout plan was made in the periphery of Himalayan Secondary
School. The practical class was supervised by all the resource persons of DMSTI.
Day 3: November 8, 2016
The training session started with the brief summary about the previous day activities. Then the
lecture was given about stone masonry and load bearing wall. Then rest of day was devoted for
completing the layout plan, earthwork, soling and placing of bend up bars above the junction.
Similarly the method for making the PCC was also discussed. One hour session was followed by
the distribution of tool kit such as pick, shovel, claw hammer, hand saw, plier and trowel.
Day 4: November 9, 2016
The training session started with the brief summary about the previous day activities. Then
lecture was delivered about the concept of assessement of quality of construction materials was
briefed. Then rest of day was devoted for completing wall up to wooden band and also prepared
wood for DPC band.
Day 5: November 10, 2016
The whole day was devoted for the practical work. The stone masonry wall was constructed
according to the guidelines provided. The construction of wooden band and wall was the major
work performed. The common mistakes while placing the stone was studied. Special emphasis
was given in the construction of the joints, placing the vertical reinforcement bar at corner and
placing door and window. In the same class the ideas for discussing the wood and bamboo as the
construction materials was also discussed.
Day 6: November 11, 2016
The brief report about the previous day work was given to the participants. Then the remaining
part of the practical i.e. construction till the sill band was done. The sill band was made up of

wood. Special focuses were made on the design of L and T junctions but in practical only L
junction was constructed. The joints orientation and the leveling of the structural wall also
discussed. For the observation of training Civil Engineer Mr. Mahendra Poudel from
CEEPAARD Nepal was attended on second half.
Day 7: November 12, 2016
It followed with feedback session and assessment of the participants. The class was started with
highlighting the bamboo and wood construction technique, alternative construction materials,
bye-laws and its implementation during construction as per the DUDBC guidelines. The
questionnaire in Nepali language is attached in Appendix D. Being last day of the training
session the practical work was done until closing ceremony started. On first half Emergency
Programme Officer Mr. Amit Chakarwarty from Christian Aid was there for supervision of semi-
skilled Carpenters and Mason Training. On closing ceremony executive director Nabaraj
Neupane and admin finance Samjhana Shrestha from CEEPAARD Nepal and executive director
Nar Bdr. Shrestha from DMSTI were attended and provided the certificate to the participants.

Achievement of Semi-Skill Carpenters and Mason Training
After this training the participants became familiar with the basic concept and design practices of
earthquake resistant building construction in the rural areas. They also knew various codes
specification and guidelines issued by the DUDBC, GoN, applicable for the earthquake
resistance building construction. The participants became knowledgeable about the frequent
probable errors and omissions likely to be encountered during the construction practice. All the
participants were involved in the real case demonstration at site right from setting layout of the
building till necessary sill, bands, lintels, etc. The participants after this training became
competent to design and construction of earthquake resistant structures in rural area.
