Over the past 30 years, trend following has been a remarkably successful futures trading strategy. Once a fringe trading style barely known outside of Chicago, it has grown into a 300 billion dollar global industry. It would be very difficult indeed to claim that trend following doesn’t work in the face of decades of empirical evidence otherwise. But trend following isn’t completely without problems.
It is well known that classic trend following models tend to lose money on a majority of trades. This is not necessarily an issue, since trend following is all about accepting a large number of small losses in exchange for a small number of large gains. As long as the net is positive, all is fine. That is the underlying idea of the strategy and it has historically worked very well.
However, if you dissect trend following models you can find weaknesses which could be exploited. This is what counter trend trading models are about. These counter trend models usually operate on a shorter time frame and with nearly opposite logic.
As counter trend models are gaining popularity in the systematic trading hedge fund field, a few questions arise. Are these models a threat to trend following? Can they be a complement to trend following? Can trend following be adapted to be less susceptible to the counter trend issue?
‘My Personal Forex Trading Plan’ is one of a small number of trading books from
which one can actually learn a complete Forex trading strategy as a systematic
process from beginning to end.
This book is as straight forward as can be. Each short chapter is a standalone trading concept and the last chapter ‘Putting it all together’ outlines a complete Forex trading plan of action.

Should You Build Your Own Backtester? by Michael Halls-Moore at QuantCon 2016Quantopian
The huge uptake of Python and R as first-class programming languages within quantitative trading has lead to an abundance of backtesting libraries becoming widely available. It can take months, if not years, to develop a robust backtesting and trading infrastructure from scratch and many of the vendors (both commercial and open source) have a huge head start. Apache Iceberg table format is now in use and contributed to by many leading tech companies like Netflix, Apple, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Dremio, Expedia, and AWS.

Apache Hive is a rapidly evolving project which continues to enjoy great adoption in the big data ecosystem. As Hive continues to grow its support for analytics, reporting, and interactive query, the community is hard at work in improving it along with many different dimensions and use cases. This talk will provide an overview of the latest and greatest features and optimizations which have landed in the project over the last year. Materialized views, the extension of ACID semantics to non-ORC data, and workload management are some noteworthy new features.
We will discuss optimizations which provide major performance gains, including significantly improved performance for ACID tables. The talk will also provide a glimpse of what is expected to come in the near future.
Capturing live traffic in a typical micro-services setup is one of the industry standard strategies for various needs including testing, canary, and dark launches, but when it comes to databases, capturing and replaying live traffic is quite challenging but equally critical. Cassandra is one of the few databases which supports a live traffic capture and replay feature out of the box starting with 4.0. As part of this talk, Vinay Chella will dive deeper into the query logging framework that is introduced in Cassandra 4.0, and the features built on top of this framework, including full query logging, audit logging, and traffic replay. At end of this talk, you will learn how to use audit logging, live traffic capture and replay features in the upcoming release of Cassandra.

MySQL and MariaDB have different types of parallel replication; in this talk, I present the different implementations, with their limitations and the corresponding tuning parameters. I cover what to do to make parallel replication faster and what to avoid for maximizing parallel replication benefits. I also present benchmark results from real Booking.com workloads. Finally, I discuss some deployments at Booking.com that take advantage of parallel replication speed improvements.

Contrary to popular wisdom the difference between a retail quant trader and a professional portfolio manager is not in "having better trade entry and exit rules". Rather it is the difference in how each approaches the concepts of portfolio optimisation and risk management.
Both of these topics are synonymous with heavy math, which can be off-putting for beginner retail systematic traders. Hence, it can be extremely daunting for those without institutional experience to know how to turn a set of trading rules into a robust portfolio and risk management system.

MongoDB and the Connectivity Map: Making Connections Between Genetics and Dis...MongoDB
The Broad Institute has developed a novel high-throughput gene-expression profiling technology and has used it to build an open-source catalog of over a million profiles that captures the functional states of cells when treated with drugs and other types of perturbations. Referred to as the Connectivity Map (or CMap), these data when paired with pattern matching algorithms, facilitate the discovery of connections between drugs, genes and diseases. We wished to expose this resource to scientists around the world via an API that is easily accessible to programmers and biologists alike. We required a database solution that could handle a variety of data types and handle frequent changes to the schema. We realized that a relational database did not fit our needs, and gravitated towards MongoDB for its ease of use, support for dynamic schema, complex data structures and expressive query syntax. In this talk, we’ll walk through how we built the CMap library. We’ll discuss why we chose MongoDB, the various schema design iterations and tradeoffs we’ve made, how people are using the API, and what we’re planning for the next generation of biomedical data.

Migration from SQL to MongoDB - A Case Study at TheKnot.com MongoDB
8 out of 10 couples use TheKnot.com to help plan their wedding. A key part of planning involves selecting articles, photographs, and other resources and storing these in the user's Favorites. Recently we migrated major parts of our technology stack to open source technologies. As part of our migration strategy, we zeroed in on MongoDB, since it better suited our requirements for speed and data structure as well as eliminating the need for a caching layer. The transition required a period in which both our legacy and new API where working concurrently with data being persisted on both databases (SQL and Mongo) and all records were being synched with every request. We resourced to many strategies and applications to achieve this goal, including: Pentaho, AWS SQS and SNS, a queue messenger system and some proprietary ruby gems. In this session we will review our strategy and some of the lessons we learned about successfully migrating with zero downtime.

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
