Renal ultrasound
What is ultrasound ?
Sound is a wave
Ultrasound is also a wave
of high frequency than human hearing limit
Ultrasound
A-mode : in ophthalmology
M-mode in cardiology
B-mode : brightness mode [90]
Kidney ultrasound :
• B mode ultrasound 90
• Doppler - spectral Doppler NO 90
- color Doppler
- power Doppler
• 3D ultrasound
• Renal Elastogram
US of Normal kidney
Fetal kidney Infant kidney
Normal variants
Ultrasound is used in diagnosis
of many renal disorders
• Congenital
• Traumatic
• Inflammatory
• Neoplastic
• Others
Parenchymal disease
Renal parenchymal disease basically appear echogenic
There are three grades of renal parenchymal disease
???
1843
Color Doppler US
• Renal artery assessment
• Renal transplants
• Renal vein thrombosis
• Renal failure
• Obstructive uoropathy
• Tumor and infectious pathology
• Ureters
RENAL ARTERY
examined at
• Main renal artery
• Segmental branches
• Upper ,middle &lower renal
poles
SPECTRAL STUDY ++++
The normal peak systolic velocity of the main renal artery is less than 150 cm/sec.
The resistive index is less than 0.70 .
Resistive index
RI = Less than 0.7
Causes of increased
resistance :
1- Acute and chronic
parenchymal disease
2- Obstruction
3- Renal vein thrombosis
?????????
Color Doppler &
Transplanted kidney
Complications of allograft
• Site of anastomosis
- Artery
- Vein
- Ureters
• Renal tissue
• Surroundings
Doppler can assess the AF fistula
for patients on dialysis
Color swirl
High flow volume
Ultrasound is an excellent guide in
renal intervention & biopsy
We are on the same vision
on the way to
open a dedicated unites for :
- Ultrasound interventions
- Color Doppler
- Neuroradiology
- women imaging
- etc ……
THANK YOU
