1) The document discusses different approaches to user testing, including moderated vs unmoderated testing, prototyping full apps vs prioritized stories, and personalized vs aggregated feedback. It suggests balancing these approaches to learn quickly.
2) It recommends prioritizing the riskiest assumptions and most important things to learn when deciding how much of a design to prototype.
3) For quick prototyping, it suggests focusing user stories into specific tasks that can then be tested through a personalized scenario walkthrough. This allows learning patterns across participants.

You’ve got a million-dollar idea for an app. Or you have a burnished multi-million-dollar business and need a next-level consumer experience to match. How much does app development cost? What is the breakdown of the total pricing? You know that you need to find a good development partner at the right price before you can knock it out of the park. But you also want a beautiful app that transforms the way users interact with your company — Millennials, Gen Zers, and Boomers alike. So how many Benjamins are we talking?

Establishing Your Program's ROI
The first hurdle is at home. Every program manager must defend his program to the execs in the corner office. It is absolutely essential that you can establish a positive ROI for your program and be able to show its value. Bruce Jones will show you how this is done.
First Presented: March 23, 2014 - Developer Relations Bootcamp
As designers, our goal is to come up with the best user experiences possible, now and in the future. Therefore we might not care about ROI, at least not in the traditional sense. We are trained to think with empathy and spend time listening to our users, so how do we measure our success and justify the investment to our stakeholders? How do we find time between the day-to-day issues and current development work to do strategic thinking and innovation? We all know that companies that don’t innovate and don’t listen to their users don’t survive, but it is the UXer’s job to make sure we do so.

Responsive Web Design, our 2 year journey of discoveryDarren Cousins
A digital agency gives a candid history of its development experience with responsive web design, outlining the problems and solutions it's developers faced and how it changed it's approach
Responsive web design is hard and one of the most difficult things to work out is representing visual design in a flexible manner that can accurately be translated to code. In this panel we will discuss how we used InDesign to create flexible comps and rapidly iterate between multiple designers. We went with the concept of ‘just enough’ design to get us into code, where we could validate our design decisions. We will also go into how we iterated after the code was done but the design was not. We borrowed heavily from Upstatements approach to designing the Boston Globe but ran into our own unique challenges along the way.

• Effective mobile design prototyping by Miguel Saballa, a Product Design Lead at honestbee
The experience your customers have with your products is a critical component of success. Valuable products can solve real human needs, fulfill desires, and improve the quality the of life. This goes beyond just building more features, or making things look pretty. It involves understanding and empathizing with your customers, and involving them in the design process.
How do we do this? And how do we do this in a way that fits into the operational rhythms of Agile development? These perspectives are shared by a long-time UX designer who has recently moved into Agile.
Design driven companies are outperforming their competition, but what does it mean to be design driven? Design driven companies are moving past just UX, UI and product and are using design thinking and design methods in everything from organization, to strategy, to sales operations. At Konrad+King we see the key to being design driven is to keep the customer involved in every decision. In this presentation we will talk about the things you can do to become a design-driven company and ways that you can bring the voice of the user in throughout the development process.

There’s real evidence that Agile software engineering projects work better than waterfall. In Silicon Valley, Agile is the de-facto standard for innovating new products. But an Agile project needs good product management and good UX design to succeed. Fitting UX in with product management and Agile can be uncomfortable for UX designers. Once you get it, though, you’ll never want to work any other way. We’ll look at:
- Why Agile works well for innovation and for software delivery
- What product management is and why your software product can’t succeed without it
- The different product phases: Discover, expand and exploit
- The role of UX in each phase
- Setting up hypotheses and metrics to keep Agile teams on track
Get hands-on advice for rapid Agile prototyping in a product team.
You'll learn:
- How to determine the right depth and breadth for MVP prototypes.
- How to prioritize use cases for prototyping.
- How to elicit the right stakeholder and user feedback.
- How to correctly annotate prototypes for dev and QA.

Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
SOCRadar Research Team: Latest Activities of IntelBrokerSOCRadar
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

How many of you see a difference between prototypes meant for users vs. teams vs. business?
Personally, prototypes I create for my team depends a lot on where we are in the design process, my prior experience with the team and so on. Early on the process, I can .
But for early bird prototypes, instead of having to choose amongst three kinds, it’s always better to design for validation with users. Why? It can also be used with teams and business stakeholders.

Sounds good.
Prototyping is a way to explore solutions with users, with minimal set up and risk. This is also when fresh ideas happen.
Something may look well designed, but only when you start using it do you realize whether it’s indeed well designed.
You have a disciplined practice if you can design today and validate tomorrow. How many among you have this?
