VIAS undertook a design optimization study to optimize the design of a modular steel-plate composite (SC) primary shield wall (PSW). This PSW is used for support and protection of nucear reactor pressure vessel. Using initial design variables and non-linear material models, 3D FEA model was simulated. Using process automation, Response Surface method was implemented by automating 35 FEA runs. This study resulted in optimized dimensions for the PSW.
VIAS conducted a recent study involving the design qualification an Earthquake-Resistant Ductile Iron Pipe (ERDIP) joint against seismic events using simulation. Validation of the FEA model was performed using physical test data for a small diameter pipe joint. Further analysis was carried out wherein the pipe-soil interactions and the pipe-joint behaviors were represented by sets of non-linear springs. A stretch of the pipeline consisting of many pipe joints was undertaken to ascertain integrity under seismic fault movement conditions. The pipeline was acted upon by a fault rupture at specified azimuth angles and fault length. The simulation predicted that the pipe joints would meet the design criteria if the fault azimuth angle was within a certain threshold.
With the advent of efficient and robust numerical analysis techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) and the increased computing power of today’s hardware solutions, it has become practical to simulate thermo-mechanical behaviors of plastics and rubbers that can capture the physical reality of such materials with high fidelity. Replicating physical behavior of highly complex and non-linear materials such as plastics have positioned FEA tools to create life like models that will behave like the real part or product. Such simulation can compare very well with the physical test. Therefore, using FEA techniques one can perform virtual testing to design plastic products and also can use simulation techniques to optimize design based on a mathematically robust approach instead of heuristic, experience based approach only. Using FEA one can address the needs of the product development lifecycle from concept through detailed design capturing realistic simulation of underlying complex physics.

2008 IFAC World Congress: Oil and gas production optimization - lost potentia...Steinar Elgsæter
The information content in measurements of offshore oil and gas production is often low, and when a production model is fitted to such data, uncertainty may result. If production is optimized with an uncertain model, some potential production profit may be lost. The costs and risks of introducing additional excitation are typically large and cannot be justified unless the potential increase in profits are quantified. In previous work it is discussed how bootstrapping can be used to estimate uncertainty resulting from fitting production models to data with low information content. In this paper we propose how lost potential resulting from estimated uncertainty can be estimated using Monte-Carlo analysis. Based on a conservative formulation of the production optimization problem, a potential for production optimization in excess of 2% and lost potential due to the form of uncertainty considered in excess of 0.5% was identified using field data from a North Sea field.

[ Performance-Based Seismic Design ] Inelastic Behavior of Hollow Reinforced...Tae-Hoon Kim
The purpose of this study was to investigate the inelastic behavior of hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns, and to provide data for developing improved seismic design criteria. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach was incorporated. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of inelastic behavior throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated. Additionally, the studies and discussions presented in this investigation provide an insight into the key behavioral aspects of hollow reinforced concrete bridge columns.
Stress and Durability Analysis of Threaded Connections in a Cast Aluminum Cyl...Altair
Bolted connections involve sharp notched components that are therefore sensitive to fatigue loading. In internal combustion engines, the journal bearings of the crankshaft are supported by bearing caps which are bolted to the cylinder block. These threaded connections are a fatigue concern as cracking may be experienced on dynamometer tests of new engines. The critical element of this application however is not the steel studs rather the threaded bolt holes in the cast engine block. While the nominal stress concept is applicable to the fatigue design of studs, a local stress approach has to be adopted to assess the fatigue strength of threaded bolt holes.
This paper addresses the fatigue design of this kind of threaded connection. Initially alternate methods of FE modeling and analysis of threaded joints by the local approach are critically examined. The parallel development of a simplified experimental test system involving a threaded hole in cast AlSi7 is described and used to generate baseline fatigue data under known loading conditions. The fatigue behavior of the experimental system is then analyzed on the basis of alternate FE models and post processing approaches. Finally, recommendations for the accurate and computationally efficient FE modeling and durability analysis of threaded connections in cast aluminum cylinder block are outlined.

Behavior of Partially Confined Strengthened Reinforced Concrete Columns unde...Khaled Mahmoud
Presentation of Ph.D. Thesis
Reinforced concrete jacketing has been used widely for strengthening RC columns. In some cases, such as corner and edge columns, it is impossible to strengthen a column using a full jacket. Many studies have focused on fully strengthened reinforced concrete columns. However additional study is required for partially strengthened RC columns from two and three sides. So, this research focused on studying the effectiveness of strengthening the corner and edge columns under vertical load and under the combination of vertical and lateral loads. Also, the research illustrated the behavior of RC columns strengthened by RC jackets from two, three, and four sides of the perimeter and it investigated the effect of using the different interaction methods between original columns and strengthening jackets such as friction, dowels, and stirrups' welding.
A new design equation was developed from this study to calculate the capacity of a partially strengthened column under vertical load. An analytical approach was introduced to predict partial strengthened R.C. column capacity for axial and eccentric loading. By the aid of this analytical approach, flow charts were created to get the capacity of corner and edge columns subjected to vertical and lateral loads. Recommendations for column behavior after strengthening were presented to help structural engineers to capture the best efficiency from the full and partial strengthening.
an analytical study and experimental program were performed. The experimental study consisted of group of specimens having 1000 mm height, 100x100 mm cross section, and main reinforcement 4Ø10 mm with stirrups 9Ø4 mm. The specimens were divided into fifteen study cases. Different parameters such as strengthening sides, surface connections, jacket to column stirrups connection type, and loads directions due to the column location. The results were compared with some of the design equations in various codes and the results from finite element analysis.
This research introduces a new simple, efficient, and practical procedure to design
the reinforced concrete (RC) circular slabs which have large diameters. The principal
idea of this paper concerns to use the isotropic perpendicular RC straight joists to
resist the external load. The yield-line theory was adapted to analysis the circular
waffle slabs. The steps of design were according to the ACI Code provisions. Fixed
and simply supported circular slabs were presented. Closed form equations have been
driven by author for the purposes of analysis and design this type of slabs by the
present procedure. Uniformly distributed load was considered, that represent almost
practical cases. Useful illustration example is presented in this study according to the
available materials in Iraq to facilitate the job of designers. The good performance of
RC circular slab which design by the present procedure proved clearly the efficiency
of this technique.

The permeation on thin walls is a mass diffusion problem in a long-term time domain.
The application of mass diffusion analysis is limited to continuum modeling, which is not feasible to be used for thin walls, where shell elements are needed.
However, the analogy with the heat transfer governing equations allows the FE analyst to simulate the physics of the permeation problem to overcome this limitation with the proper mathematical modeling.
The objective is to develop a methodology using finite element analysis (FEA) for the shelf life of a beverage based on permeation of CO2 through a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle wall.

The current work focuses on simulation based optimization of a complex, safety critical component where it is prohibitively expensive to carry out finite element analysis (FEA) simulations for all possible sample realizations and therefore requires statistical or machine learning techniques for a timely yet accurate solution. The applicability of machine learning further brings the opportunity of performing in-service monitoring using sensor data and thereby performing predictive maintenance.

Courier management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
It is now-a-days very important for the people to send or receive articles like imported furniture, electronic items, gifts, business goods and the like. People depend vastly on different transport systems which mostly use the manual way of receiving and delivering the articles. There is no way to track the articles till they are received and there is no way to let the customer know what happened in transit, once he booked some articles. In such a situation, we need a system which completely computerizes the cargo activities including time to time tracking of the articles sent. This need is fulfilled by Courier Management System software which is online software for the cargo management people that enables them to receive the goods from a source and send them to a required destination and track their status from time to time.

8. Test Setup (Cont.)
• Test setup configured as a free
standing structure with top
connected to upper concrete
loading block and fixed base
• Lateral force applied on structure
hydraulically
• Quasi-static cyclic loading applied
• Subjected to three load-controlled
cycles in elastic range of response
• Final cycle until ultimate failure
8
9. Test Results
• Ultimate strength controlled by
combination of flexure, shear, and axial
forces in wall segments
• Local buckling and yielding occurred in
steel plates adjacent to openings
• Specimen showed substantial post yield
ductility
• Measured shear strains in inner, middle
and outer steel plates were relatively
equal
• Demonstrates that all three steel plates
contribute to system strength
9
10. FEA Model
• 3-D half model used since geometry and
loading are mirror symmetric
• All of the PSW steel plates are modeled using
4-node shell elements (S4R) and multi-axial
plasticity material model
• Concrete infill is modeled with continuum 3-D
8-node reduced integration (C3D8R) brick
elements and elastic fracture (brittle cracking)
material model
• Composite action between steel and concrete
is modeled with non-linear connector elements
• Monotonic and cyclic loading conditions are
simulated

12. FEA Model: Results (Cont.)
• Analytical load-displacement response
behavior compares well with experimental
results
• Comparisons also indicate that cyclic load
response and behavior of specimen are similar
to monotonic analysis results
• Cyclic loading is not expected to have major
influence on results due to non-ductile shear
failure of specimen
• Hence only monotonic loading considered in
the RBDO study

15. Stochastic Analysis
• Maximum Von Mises stress (σvm) induced in steel
plate considered the most important criteria to
evaluate lateral load capacity
• T, t – design variables (to be within 20% of T = 0.17 in
and t = 0.1 in)
• T , t, σy, and u considered as normal random variables
with mean values and 10 % as their coefficient of
variation (COV)
• Performance function defined as g(X)= σvm (T, t, σy,
u) - σy
• Reaching the yield strength of steel (σy) is considered
as structural failure (i.e g(X) >0) (Failure Criteria)
• Target reliability 0.99

21. Conclusions
• DO has lowered both thickness values from initial
• However, RBDO has lowered the thickness of steel plate at opening (T) by 17.64 % and
increased the thickness of typical steel plate (t) by 20 % from the original values
• RBDO achieved a reliability of 68 % and increased the reliability of the PSW structure
by 9.6 % and 23.6 % when compared to the original reliability and reliability from DO,
respectively.
21
22. Future Work
• Extension for a better RBDO of PSW which considers
• Additional failure criteria (concrete casting pressure, thermal loading, etc)
• Additional design and stochastic variables
