Applied Enterprise Semantic Mining -- Charlotte 201410Mark Tabladillo
Text mining is projected to dominate data mining, and the reasons are evident: we have more text available than numeric data. Microsoft introduced a new technology to SQL Server 2014 called Semantic Search. This session's detailed description and demos give you important information for the enterprise implementation of Tag Index and Document Similarity Index, and will also provide a comparison between what semantic search is and what Delve does. The demos include a web-based Silverlight application, and content documents from Wikipedia. We'll also look at strategy tips for how to best leverage the new semantic technology with existing Microsoft data mining.

The term "Data Lake" has become almost as overused and undescriptive as "Big Data". Many believe that centralizing datasets in HDFS makes a data lake, but then they struggle to realize any tangible value. This talk will redefine the "Data Lake" by describing four specific, key characteristics that we at Koverse have learned are crucial to successful enterprise data lake deployments. These characteristics are 1) indexing and search across all data sets, 2) interactive access for all users in the enterprise, 3) multi-level access control, and 4) integration with data science tools. These characteristics define a system that lets people realize value from their data versus getting lost in the hype. The talk will go on to provide a technical description of how we have integrated several projects, namely Apache Accumulo, Hadoop, and Spark, to implement an enterprise data lake with these key features.
Cortana Analytics Workshop: Azure Data CatalogMSAdvAnalytics
Julie Strauss. This session introduces the newest services in the Cortana Analytics family. The Azure Data Catalog is an enterprise-wide metadata catalog that enables self-service data source discovery. Data Catalog is a fully managed service that stores, describes, indexes, and provides information on how to access any registered data source in your organization. This session presents an overview of the Data Catalog and how – by using it to register, enrich, discover, understand and consume data sources – you can close the gap between those seeking information and those creating it.
An introduction to Elasticsearch's advanced relevance ranking toolboxElasticsearch
The hallmark of a great search experience is always delivering the most relevant results, quickly, to every user. The difficulty lies behind the scenes in making that happen elegantly and at a scale. From App Search’s intuitive drag and drop interface to the advanced relevance capabilities built into the core of Elasticsearch — Elastic offers a range of tools for developers to tune relevance ranking and create incredible search experiences. In this session, we’ll explore some of Elasticsearch’s advanced relevance ranking features, such as dense vector fields, BM25F, ranking evaluation, and more. Plus we’ll give you some ideas for how these features are being used by other Elastic users to create world-class, category defining search experiences.
Search was once considered a black-box application that ingested content and delivered results to users opaquely. Emerging patent thickets and standards in the medical devices and telehealth ...Quentin Tannock
The UK IP Office commissioned research with CambridgeIP to examine some of the
questions raised by the UK government's Hargreaves Review of IP and Growth. The study focuses on two broad issues: a) the
effects of patent thickets on innovation and market dynamics; and b) the role of technology
standards and patent pools as a possible response to the emergence of patent thickets. Our
research was based on a case study of the emerging space of Telehealth, and particularly
on the use of patents for wireless-‐enabled medical devices. Our methodology used a
combination of patent landscaping around 5 technology areas, interviews with industry
experts, and scholarly literature review.
ICIC 2014 Patent Citation Analysis: Tools and Techniques Dr. Haxel Consult
Cited references and citing references link patent documents through time and by subject. As citations do not depend on text search, they can be particularly useful for identifying patents from the Asian languages. Using forward and backward citations can enhance subject retrieval and provide added competitor information. Tools for searching and viewing patent citations, both forwards and backwards are now standard on most commercial patent information platforms. An overview of these will be presented. When using patent citations for search and analysis, it’s important to understand their origin. I will start by going back to basics and present an overview of the different types of patent citations, and how to use them wisely.
II-SDV 2016 Aalt van de Kuilen - The Art of Patent LandscapingDr. Haxel Consult
This presentation will give some guidelines on how to create a meaningful Patent Landscapes. Generating patent landscaping reports seems simple, but it isn’t. For making patent landscapes you have to take several different issues into consideration.
It’s important at the start to already have in mind what kind of landscape report you are going to prepare, and choose a topic of interest, but preferable not one that is too broad. It’s also extremely important to have a clean (80-90% relevance) dataset that the landscape is based on; otherwise the outcome will be rubbish. And of course, do not use landscapes for questions that require a legal opinion (like Freedom-to-operate conclusions!!). Patent landscapes are not aimed to be as precise as other patent searches.
Some more important issues has to be taken in account and are presented.
Efficient and Effective Patent Landscaping Using PatBase: a Case Study Dr. Haxel Consult
Key questions for any patent landscape analysis are:
Is this a growing area of interest?
What are the fields of current interest?
Who are the key players?
Delivered from two different perspectives, we will discuss the challenges in creating a patent landscape analysis and the features and functionality of PatBase which enable the efficient creation of clean and reliable patent landscape studies.
From the development of a comprehensive search strategy to the analysis and visualization of results, we will use a case study to demonstrate a number of features and techniques including
Thesauri to craft a comprehensive strategy.
Citation ranking to identify the most pertinent patents.
Advanced keyword highlighting to efficiently review large numbers of documents.
Use of the “Similar” function to identify related documents and
PatBase Analytics to:
Help build a comprehensive strategy and
Visualize the results of the landscape analysis.
The aim of any patent landscape analysis is to accurately identify and visualise results so that answers to key questions are quickly and easily found. This presentation will demonstrate how any user can benefit from the innovative features and functionality in PatBase to craft and visualize a meaningful patent landscape for any technical area.

AI-SDV 2021 - Tony Trippe - The Current State of Machine Learning for Patent ...Dr. Haxel Consult
The use of machine learning in IP activities has increased exponentially over the past five years. At the same time new tools, methods and systems have begun to emerge that seek to make the analysis of patent data easier to accomplish using these techniques. Included in these new developments are a significant number of machine learning systems that have begun coming to market. As these changes continue to occur, it would be useful to review some of the tools, systems, or methods that a patent practitioner has at their disposal. Examples and perspectives on the latest advances in machine learning for IP will be provided. There will also be a tour of ML4Patents.com which is devoted to aggregating content associated with the development of this area.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
