This talk will start with a deep dive and hands on examples of BPF, possibly the most promising low level technology to address challenges in application and network security, tracing, and visibility. We will discuss how BPF evolved from a simple bytecode language to filter raw sockets for tcpdump to the a JITable virtual machine capable of universally extending and instrumenting both the Linux kernel and user space applications. The introduction is followed by a concrete example of how the Cilium open source project applies BPF to solve networking, security, and load balancing for highly distributed applications. We will discuss and demonstrate how Cilium with the help of BPF can be combined with distributed system orchestration such as Docker to simplify security, operations, and troubleshooting of distributed applications.

Ftrace is the official tracer of the Linux kernel. It has been apart of Linux since 2.6.31, and has grown tremendously ever since. Ftrace’s name comes from its most powerful feature: function tracing. But the ftrace infrastructure is much more than that. It also encompasses the trace events that are used by perf, as well as kprobes that can dynamically add trace events that the user defines.
This talk will focus on learning how the kernel works by using the ftrace infrastructure. It will show how to see what happens within the kernel during a system call; learn how interrupts work; see how ones processes are being scheduled, and more. A quick introduction to some tools like trace-cmd and KernelShark will also be demonstrated.

Ftrace is the official tracer of the Linux kernel. It originated from the real-time patch (now known as PREEMPT_RT), as developing an operating system for real-time use requires deep insight and transparency of the happenings of the kernel. Not only was tracing useful for debugging, but it was critical for finding areas in the kernel that was causing unbounded latency. It's no wonder why the ftrace infrastructure has a lot of tooling for seeking out latency. Ftrace was introduced into mainline Linux in 2008, and several talks have been done on how to utilize its tracing features. But a lot has happened in the past few years that makes the tooling for finding latency much simpler. Other talks at P99 will discuss the new ftrace tracers "osnoise" and "timerlat", but this talk will focus more on the new flexible and dynamic aspects of ftrace that facilitates finding latency issues which are more specific to your needs. Some of this work may still be in a proof of concept stage, but this talk will give you the advantage of knowing what tools will be available to you in the coming year.

Kernel Recipes 2019 - ftrace: Where modifying a running kernel all startedAnne Nicolas
Ftrace’s most powerful feature is the function tracer (and function graph tracer which is built from it). But to have this enabled on production systems, it had to have its overhead be negligible when disabled. As the function tracer uses gcc’s profiling mechanism, which adds a call to “mcount” (or more recently fentry, don’t worry if you don’t know what this is, it will all be explained) at the start of almost all functions, it had to do something about the overhead that causes. The solution was to turn those calls into “nops” (an instruction that the CPU simply ignores). But this was no easy feat. It took a lot to come up with a solution (and also turning a few network cards into bricks). This talk will explain the history of how ftrace came about implementing the function tracer, and brought with it the possibility of static branches and soon static calls!

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
