results has revealed

the functioning of inmates
following Vipassana on most
psychological parameters
studied.
There is a considerable
reduction in the neurotic
predisposition and in the
feelings of hostility,
helplessness and anomie,
while the sense of hope and
well being are enhanced.

tremendously and that they could handle many more responsibilities

work non-stop for 10-14 hours a day and that too without

detachment and hence were able to perform more and in a better

commitment towards their role as police personnel.
• All of them got rid of their tensions, apprehensions and got a
heightened sense of control over their volatile temper and emotions.
• Their own understanding of other people and members of their
family increased. This leads to a lot of understanding and reduced
number of fights and flare ups.
After taking the course, following are the changes
they observe in themselves-

107. • All of them developed a lot of confidence in facing any kind of
situation and for learning new things.
• Their perception of themselves changed from that of being Mr. Right and
Authoritarian to that of a servant of the society. All of them wanted to help
more and more people to the best of their capacities. None of them wished
that if somebody comes to them for help or with a genuine expectation then
that person should go back empty handed or dejected.
• They found holding themselves more responsible towards what is
happening in the society and found that each one of them was taking a
corrective and reformative approach rather than a punitive approach
towards criminals.
• They all admitted to have learnt to accept their present wages and adjust to
live within their own means. This course has helped them in curbing the
instinct of greed from which the tendency to generate extra money from
illegal sources emerged . They have been able to get out of a materialistic
and consumeristic culture.
• Their perceptions about human rights also changed as they developed an
increased sensitivity towards human values after doing this course, so they
claimed. They felt that these are inalienable rights that are available one
and all themselves in the shoes of an ordinary harassed human being and
ask themselves about the kind of treatment which they themselves would
expect in such situations.
