Energy sector today faces immense challenges to secure a sustainable future. The major issue related to energy is how to supply a secure, affordable, and clean energy. Climate change has made environmental issues highly significant and it has pushed the international community to act urgently on reducing greenhouse gases such as dioxide carbon, methane, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxide. These emissions are mostly released by using fossil fuels as primary source of energy. Energy is an integral part of our lives, thus spending it efficiently is essential for the future. Many energy efficiency initiatives have been undertaken worldwide, yet there are still many concerns related to this issue.

The International Energy Agency has issued a report charting four climate-wise steps countries can take to make a difference in greenhouse-gas emissions by 2020:
- Targeted energy efficiency measures in buildings, industry and transport account for nearly half the emissions reduction in 2020, with the additional investment required being more than offset by reduced spending on fuel bills.
- Limiting the construction and use of the least-efficient coal-fired power plants delivers more than 20% of the emissions reduction and helps curb local air pollution. The share of power generation from renewables increases (from around 20% today to 27% in 2020), as does that from natural gas.
- Actions to halve expected methane (a potent greenhouse gas) releases into the atmosphere from the upstream oil and gas industry in 2020 provide 18% of the savings.
- Implementing a partial phase-out of fossil fuel consumption subsidies accounts for 12% of the reduction in emissions and supports efficiency efforts.

This involves setting up emissions trading systems in many countries, linking these systems directly or indirectly, and developing a well-functioning credit mechanism. While emissions trading systems differ in costs and effects across countries, linking leads to price convergence though not all sectors may benefit, and credits can lower costs but require ensuring environmental integrity. Success requires attention to harmonization and regulatory cooperation to avoid ineffective, costly policies from limited coverage or barriers to a global carbon market.

The amount of profit that businesses can generate depends on how well they control their costs. There are many costs with which businesses deal with, but energy costs remain among the most significant for many of them. The industrial sector is one of the largest energy consumers. Companies are constantly seeking innovative ways on how to spend the energy more efficiently. The standard that is widely being used to reduce energy costs is ISO 50001 or the Energy Management System (EnMS). ISO 50001 was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) with the aims at improving organization’s energy performance.

Dr. Edward Marchewka is a seasoned executive that has come up through the ranks in the IT vertical, expanding into information security, quality management, and strategic planning.
Edward founded and serves as the Principal for 3LC Solutions, enabling YOU to Tell a Better Story in business, with our vCIO, vCISO, quality, and strategy consulting services, through metrics and relating risk to the business with our CHICAGO Metrics® SaaS solution.
He has also held several roles leading information technology, most recently with Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network, leading the Information and Technology Services department as the Director of IT, Data, and Security Services. Prior to Gift of Hope, he ran information security for Chicago Public Schools.
Edward has earned a Doctorate of Business Administration from California Southern University and Masters’ degrees in Business Administration and Mathematics from Northern Illinois University. He earned Bachelors’ degrees in Liberal Studies and Nuclear Engineering Technologies from Thomas Edison State College, N.J. Edward maintains several active IT, security, and professional certifications from (ISC)2, ASQ, ITIL, PCI, PMI, ISACA, Microsoft, and CompTIA. He has held legacy IT certifications from Cisco and HP, and a designation from the National Security Agency.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

- 2. Produce more with less energy Energy sector today faces immense challenges to secure a sustainable future. The major issue related to energy is how to supply a secure, affordable, and clean energy. Climate change has made environmental issues highly significant and it has pushed the international community to act urgently on reducing greenhouse gases such as dioxide carbon, methane, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxide. These emissions are mostly released by using fossil fuels as primary source of energy. Energy is an integral part of our lives, thus spending it efficiently is essential for the future. Many energy efficiency initiatives have been undertaken worldwide, yet there are still many concerns related to this issue. The attempt to reduce the consumption of energy coming from scarce and hazardous resources has grown worldwide. Governments play a significant role in developing policies which aim at reducing the energy consumption without impairing economic growth. Even though the use of renewable resources is encouraged, according to International Energy Agency market report of 2014, in 2013, only 22 % of the energy consumed worldwide was renewable. These government initiatives aim at mitigating climate change and increasing expenses related to energy that lead to environmental, social, and economic issues. The industrial sector is one of the largest energy users. According to US Energy Information Administration, 51.7% of the world energy was consumed for industrial uses in 2012, 26.6% for transportation, 13.9% for residential needs and 7.8% for the commercial sector. Energy plays a crucial role for the operation of many organizations but it can also represent a financial burden. For many organizations energy represents one of the highest operational cost, which leads many organizations to seek energy saving strategies. The energy consumption varies between organizations as it depends on the company’s activities. Since energy costs are often hard to handle and organizations cannot control government decisions on the prices and policies related to energy, the best option is to try and reduce the energy costs in order to improve the bottom line. The demand for energy has increased worldwide, as did the price along with it. Reducing energy costs does not only benefit organizations but it can also have a social and environmental impact. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 50001 (Energy Management System – EnMS) which aims at improving the energy performance of all types of organizations while cutting the energy costs. Some of the benefits of implementing ISO 50001 include: • Reduction of energy consumption and carbon emissions in a systematic way • Management of energy assets • Management of energy resources • Implementation of new energy efficiency technologies • Improvement of decision making • Raises the awareness of employees on energy matters • Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements • Provides an energy efficiency framework throughout the supply chain • Permits integration with other management systems such as environmental, quality, and health and safety. 2

Rapid technological advancements have not only affected the economic and social development, but also the energy consumption worldwide as most of the technologies run on electricity. The economic growth, increase in population, and technological innovations will continue to grow the demand for energy. Implementing standards such as ISO 50001 is crucial for organizations that want to improve their energy performance. The organizations implementing energy management systems will remain competitive due to the reduction in their costs. Growing energy demand will make energy management crucial for a sustainable business, and as such the need for qualified personnel on implementation and audit of ISO 50001 will keep increasing.
