The Heart is a Christian Environment
Each Wednesday our children meet within the Sanctuary that is beautifully decorated with over 16 stained
glass windows that depict stories from the Bible. This environment provides excitement and energy to boost
spirits as we learn, praise, and celebrate the love of Jesus Christ.
“The Village”
Our staff takes an oath in front of the congregation of over 3,000 members to be part of this ministry in not
only teaching our children about Jesus, but also setting an example for them as disciples. We take pride in
accepting the responsibility of teaching each child as if they were our own.
An Unparalleled Teaching Staff
With an average accumulation of over 14 years of teaching experience across the staff, teachers strive to
ingrain in children a love for learning and are able to offer creative opportunities. Our fundamental goals are
to build a strong foundation of self-confident individuals, while acknowledging each child’s unique God-
given gifts and talents, provide quality education, and lead children closer to Jesus.
Natural Beauty
We have a series of award-winning gardens around campus that children take part in maintaining.
Although seasonal, the gardens are very educational and provide aesthetic beauty. As children walk into
the buildings and around campus, they are constantly reminded of the natural wonder of God’s creation
and feel rewarded for being a part of the picture! Many of our classrooms are situated with large windows
providing awe-encompassing natural light, as well as an opportunity to visually connect with nature and the
surrounding environment.
Hands-On Programs
Much of what our children experience involves hands-on learning and exploration through play.
Whether children are auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learners, this environment allows for a range
of opportunities to learn.
Integrated Technology
Striking a balance between being tech-savvy and knowing how to connect with other human beings is vital
for success in the real world. All of our classrooms are equipped with SMART Board technology, iPads, and
computers, which our staff and children use in a variety of ways to reinforce academics and enhance the
learning experience.

Q: Is there a required uniform?
A: Yes. Khaki or navy shorts or pants with collared knit
shirts (red, white, green, or blue). Uniforms may be
purchased at Parker Uniforms or through our uniform
resale on campus. Most Fridays throughout the year,
students may earn the privilege of wearing jeans and a
PTL-sponsored t-shirt.
Q: What if our family isn’t Lutheran?
A: Being of Lutheran faith is not a requirement, but
Redeemer Lutheran School does teach Christian beliefs
and morals based on the Bible. While academics are
at the forefront, teaching our children about the love of
Jesus Christ is our top priority.
Q: Is before- and after-school care offered?
A: Yes. Various schedules and prices are offered for
before- and after-school care. Times range from 7am to
6pm. Dependent upon need, pricing ranges from $50
to $230. Please refer to the corresponding handout for
more information.
Q: Do Redeemer teachers have Texas Teacher
Certifications?
A: Yes. All elementary-level teachers have teacher
certifications. Some of our teachers have also acquired
an M.Ed. (Master of Education). In addition, many
teachers have received religious training that supports
their Christian teachings in class.
Q: Does Redeemer require standardized testing?
A: In 2nd grade, we begin testing our students with
the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Within the public
school system, standardized testing (STARR) begins in
3rd grade, and is a primary focus throughout the entire
school year. At Redeemer, prep time for the ITBS is
minimal. The ITBS provides insight into the development
of our students and how we can better serve them.
Q: What does a Redeemer education focus on?
At Redeemer, we value Christ-centered foundations,
relationships, and experiences. A Redeemer education
focuses on independent and holistic learning, which in
turn facilitates the overall growth and development of our
children.
Q: How is technology being integrated into the
classroom?
A: Our classrooms are equipped with computers,
iPads, and SMART Boards. SMART Boards allow all
students to learn interactively. With its universal design,
SMART Board technology provides opportunities for
visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning types, as well
as differentiated instruction. For more information on
SMART Board technology, visit smarttech.com.
Q: In what ways is Redeemer moving students
towards a platform of “higher achievement?”
A: Starting in Kindergarten, core academics focus on
foundations in reading, writing, math, social studies and
science. Our goal is to have students reading fluently by
3rd grade. From grades K-2nd, they learn and grow a
love for the fundamentals of reading. From 3rd grade on,
they use their love for reading to learn.
In addition, we offer a faster-paced curriculum allowing
for students to advance in subjects quicker than those in
a public setting, as well as individualized advancements
based on where each child is with their unique learning
abilities. Please review our school’s ITBS score results
sheet.

8. Playgrounds
According to an American Academy of
Pediatrics report, “Play allows children to
use their creativity while developing their
imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and
emotional strength. It allows children to explore the
world, practice adult roles, and gain confidence. It also
improves children’s social skills as well, by helping them
to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to
resolve conflicts, and to learn self-advocacy skills.”

mercy, to offer your bodies as living

9. Meals on Wheels (MOW) (288 sq. ft.):
Redeemer students cultivate basil, rosemary,
marjoram, and other savory herbs. The
MOW Herb Garden products go to Meals
on Wheels. Since the 2,000 daily meals prepared and delivered
by this agency to Austin’s senior residents must comply with a
variety of health needs, they are not all prepared with salt. To
spice things up, MOW cooks use our herbs! For the past ten
years Redeemer students have been part of this community effort
to battle hunger.
Milkweed Patch: Students maintain and monitor a special area
of our Butterfly Garden where we plant milkweed – the only
plant monarch butterfly larvae feed upon. When their migration
transits Austin, children find all stages of the butterfly’s growth.
We investigate the wide range of interrelated life in this mini-
habitat, reporting our findings for JourneyNorth and tagging
butterflies for MonarchWatch.
Monarch Tagging: Monarchs are tagged by
students as part of a migration study.
Adopt-a-Tree: The Redeemer campus is blessed
with a wide variety of native trees. Students select
a tree for study throughout the seasons, identifying
bark and leaf, flower and seed. Students share their
findings, compare specimens and wait for Mexican
Plum to ripen, Redbud to bloom, and Texas Red
Oak leaves to change color.
Science Enrichment Program
Our multifaceted Science Enrichment Program is also known as a “Science Play-Lab,” which provides a two-
in-one model of indoors and outdoors. This program helps to support in-class curriculum with hands-on
exploration.
The Stuemke Outdoor Classroom:
The Nature Playground
Redeemer children are part of what makes the
campus so fun and beautiful through gardening
and playing in nature. The Redeemer Lutheran
campus includes 11 acres. Over 17,500 sq. ft. of
that land is a nature playground.

11. Animals and Insects
Redeemer students have the opportunity to study
and care for a variety of animals including rabbits,
chickens, quail, coral snakes, lizards, toads, ladybugs,
butterflies, and caterpillars. This aspect of Science
Enrichment puts children directly in touch with the
wonders of life.
11
12. Baby Chicks for Easter:
When the season warms,
we incubate eggs from
our chickens and quail.
Counting off days,
measuring temperature,
“candling” the egg (placing
the egg next to a bright
light to reveal shape of the
developing chick) – all become meaningful data as we
await hatching.
Ground Cinnamon: The first tier of
tools for the scientist is our bodily senses.
Sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.
We put ours to the test as we grate and
grind spices. Using molcajetes and other grinders, the
younger children develop strength of grip as they grind
cinnamon sticks into powder. Add a little sugar and
what do you have? Cinnamon toast topping!
Toys for Cats at Austin Humane Society: Led by a 6th
grader with a passion for animals, the older children
stitched together fabric fish and filled them with batting
and catnip. The sewing was such a hit that we created
blankets as well. Cats and kittens from the Austin
Humane Society received our gifts.

Inside Classroom: The Rainbow Room
and The Old Parish Hall
There is some nostalgia to the Inside Classroom. 60 years
ago, the building was the original Parish Hall used for
church services on Sunday mornings. Much like that
of Little House on the Prairie, 22 students between 1st
and 5th grades attended classes Monday through Friday.
Class was taught by the first of four principals, Mr. Norm
Stuemke. The Outdoor Classroom was named in his
honor.
12
13. Art
Art offers an opportunity
to explore God’s creation
by developing the child’s
imagination and creativity through self-
expression. After all, God is the master
artist! This is achieved by exploring the
different elements of art and principles
of design. Children will learn about
various artists and art techniques.
According to PBS Parents, “In recent
years, school curricula in the United
States have shifted heavily toward
common core subjects of reading and
math, but what about the arts? Although
some may regard art education as a
luxury, simple creative activities are
some of the building blocks of child
development. Learning to create and
appreciate visual aesthetics may be more
important than ever to the development
of the next generation of children as
they grow up.”(pbs.org/parents)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth. Now the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

Spanish
Spanish classes are
taught in all levels,
from Pre-Kindergarten
through 8th grade. Elementary
grades meet twice a week. Spanish
classes are taught for the purposes
of gaining exposure to the language
and the cultures that use it, building vocabulary and
basic language use, fostering confidence in speech and
listening skills, and to promote respect for diversity.
This is done through a variety of methods such as
music and song, games, oral and written activities, and
through movement.
16
Why Study Spanish?
• It’s everywhere! An estimated 400 million people
worldwide use Spanish in 21 countries. Learning Spanish
allows students to better understand these countries and
cultures.
• It’s history! The Spanish were some of the first Europeans
to settle in the what is now the United States. Six U.S.
states have Spanish names as well as countless other places
in our country!
• It improves knowledge of the English language!
Students who study a second language achieve higher in
the areas of reading and language arts.
• It provides more opportunities to engage with the
community! Learning another language develops
positive impressions of other cultures, provides a wider
global perspective, and it fosters a sense of friendship and
diversity awareness.
• It’s mental exercise! A second language bolsters higher
cognitive development in mental flexibility, creativity,
divergent thinking and higher-order thinking skills.

Music Program
Foundations and Resources
In general music classes, students learn to decode,
notate, read, compose, and improvise. Redeemer is
blessed to have a large instrumentarium including
xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, congas,
boomwhackers, soprano recorders, alto recorders, tenor
recorders, and a plethora of non-pitched percussion.
Props such as scarves and ribbons add excitement and
beauty to movement.
An Appreciation of Differences
During choir, four classes come together at once to form a
massive group of 80+ children. Students experience many
genres of music. From folk songs to anthems, Broadway to
world music, students build an impressive repertoire as they
learn to sing in two- and three-part harmony.
17
Music classes at Redeemer
provide exciting, hands-
on experiences which
enhance our model of Whole Child
Development. Through the integration
of music, movement, speech, and
drama, our students learn through play.
Our goal is to instill our students with a lifelong appreciation
of music. Between general music classes and choir, students
have music classes three times a week!

Good to Know
Most areas of the Redeemer campus are covered during our
in-person tours however, there are some areas which aren’t
so obvious but are still good to know about.
• The Youth Center - The Youth Center is a favorite
spot for kids to play ping-pong, pool, and video
games. The room is approximately 3000 sq. ft. and
is equipped with a kitchenette, a stage, instruments,
a microphone, SMARTboard Technology, and audio-
visual equipment. The center is used on Sundays for
The Redeemer High School Ministries as well as for Jr.
High Youth Confirmation Classes. During the week,
the school may use this room for class parties, art
shows, electives, classes, and other social gatherings.
• The Basement - Basements are scarce in Austin,
however, the Redeemer Church basement includes 4
full-sized rooms and one enlarged room. It was used
as a shelter during The Cold War and today provides a
safe gathering place for children in times of inclement
weather.
• Reception & Multi-Purpose Room with Kitchen -
The upstairs Reception Room is approximately
3000 sq. ft. and can be divided into four quadrants.
Elementary school celebrations, new parent
presentations, parties, special presentation days at
school, and one-on-one teaching are just a few of the
activities that this special area is used for. The adjacent
Kitchen makes food service to large audiences very
convenient.
23. • Age-appropriate weekly services
• All-school service once per month
ChapelWe Strive to Make Disciples of Children through Leadership
During the school year, each class has an opportunity to lead
Chapel. This allows for each child to present to an audience of
over 400 students and faculty building real-world presentation
skills and in an environment where self-confidence is grown
through a supportive, loving staff.
We Strive to Make Disciples of Children through Outreach
Gary Chapman wrote about the Five Love Languages, one of
which is Gift Giving. There are local organizations and partners
where Austinites can go for help – cancer patients, expectant
mothers, soldiers, families in need of food and clothing. Every
month, our children can participate in collecting donations for
these organizations. The offerings are presented at a special time
during Chapel for staff and campus visitors to witness.
We Support the “How” in Being Christian
Knowing how to be a Christian can be challenging. We have
degreed Ministers of Christian Education that teach our children
what, how, and where to be Christian starting in a Christian-based
environment.
Building Relationships, Building Community
Redeemer Lutheran School supports over 500 families across
all of our schools. The whole school community comes together
at least once a month to worship and give thanks for the love of
Jesus Christ. A family who worships together stays together, and
that includes our children and the lifelong friends they make at
Redeemer.
Focusing on Others before Self
We talk about how Jesus is our role model, and focused on
others as well. Chapel helps children to focus on others before
self by praying for those in need and giving thanks to God.
Parents Are the Example-Setters
Parents are the strongest influencers in the lives of their children;
they are their primary teachers. We absolutely love to have families
attend the Chapel services, providing a visual cue to their children
that communicates their love for Jesus Christ as example-setters.
It’s Fun!
Redeemer Lutheran School intentionally engages children in
worship. Our chapel has large white screens supporting visual aids
for sing-alongs, and a wonderful sound system for upbeat music.
Student engagement is the key! It’s just fun!
