Case Study #2: University of LaVerne - Writing Sample
The University of La Verne worked with marketing agencies to develop a personalized direct mail campaign to prospective students. They created a website for students to submit details in order to receive customized brochures tailored to their interests. The brochures were digitally printed using variable data on an iGen press. Initial results showed around a 5% response rate to the direct mail pieces. The campaign helped distinguish ULV from competitors and gave students information personalized to their needs.

A survey of 253 college media advisers found that while most student newspapers have an online presence, they are slow to embrace new online technologies and opportunities. Over 90% of student newspapers have websites, but fewer than 25% utilize features like RSS feeds, podcasts, blogs or video. Additionally, most newspapers update their websites no more frequently than their print editions and two-thirds of schools do not sell online advertising. The survey suggests student media is lagging in transitioning to digital and new media.

A survey of 253 college media advisers found that while most student newspapers have an online presence, they are slow to embrace new online technologies and opportunities. Over 90% of student newspapers have websites, but fewer than 25% utilize features like RSS feeds, podcasts, blogs or video. Additionally, most newspapers update their websites no more frequently than their print editions and two-thirds of schools do not sell online advertising. The survey suggests student media is lagging in transitioning to digital and new media.

Thursday, October 2nd, the AMIS crew that visited the Oracle Open World conference reported their findings in a 3.5 hour session. In segments on SOA & BPM, Middleware, Database, Oracle Applications (AIA) and Development technology, we presented the highlights from close to 1900 sessions - no small feat. And utterly incomplete of course. However, all in all, for people who did not attend the "red party" the evening gave a very useful overview of what Oracle is doing and where it is heading.

How the Middle East used Social Media in 2020
This report is the ninth in an annual series of publications, dating back to 2012, showcasing the latest developments in social media across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
This yearโs study is produced in partnership with the New Media Academy. The New Media Academy was inaugurated in June 2020, by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, and ruler of Dubai, to work within the space of development, with a focus on harnessing opportunities in the digital space.
Using a broad range of industry, academic and media sources, we dive into the trends - and biggest stories - which shaped MENAโs relationship with social media during the past year. Not surprisingly, this study is heavily influenced by the impact of
COVID-19. The novel coronavirus impacted on everyoneโs lives around the world, including the Middle East. One by-product of the pandemic could be seen in our changing media habits. Social media usage - across all platforms - increased during the early stages of the outbreak.
More widely, given the importance of social media in our media diets, platforms, industry and governments alike sought to use these networks to promote public health messages, as well as counter misinformation related to the COVID crisis.
Alongside these developments, we have also seen continued investment in content on social media platforms - especially during Ramadan - and growing partnerships between traditional media players and social media channels and influencers. These developments reflect the popularity of high quality digital content consumed on social media, and a desire to reach audiences on these platforms, or bring existing social
audiences onto other networks.
We expect that this synergy will only rise, not least because many media habits developed during the pandemic may well continue post-COVID. As a result, social networks will become an increasingly important source for talent spotting, as well as a
key avenue for content and information consumption.
This trend, as we outline at the end of this report, matters for brands, creators and influencers, as well as governments and other public entities. Social media is already an important part of digital media habits and digital marketing strategies. In 2021,
that importance looks set to continue and grow even further.

- Figure out what you want the students to know and be able to do at the end of the program and work backwards. Identify desired results Determine acceptable evidence Plan learning experiences and instructionDonโt try to do it all in every class. Example of CJ222: accuracy, verification, independence Overarching: Purpose, principles and practices of journalism. Assessment! Direct and Indirect.
- Our program is expensive. Administration wants the benefit of the program, but isnโt always forthcoming with the necessary resources in terms of faculty, equipment or technical support. The industry is concerned that we will โthrow the baby out with the bathwater,โ and teach tools rather than retain a focus on the core principals and purposes of journalism in a democratic society. Some students want stand-alone courses in every new delivery system that comes down the pike. (We canโt offer independent courses in twitter, second life, etc.).
- Our primary focus is on teaching students to be competent, committed journalists regardless of the delivery method. ย
- We need to educate ourselves and others about what is realistic and the consequences of layering on more and more with fewer bodies and resources to do the work of journalism. No one else will be an advocate. We need to partner with industryโฆtalk about whatโs on the agenda for the conference, my own experience with the Journal-Sentinel
