In this paper, we propose a method for detecting the positions of pedestrians by cooperation of multiple cars with directional antennas to support drivers for pedestrian safety. In the method, each pedestrian carries a device which periodically transmits a beacon with a unique ID, and each car passing near the pedestrian receives the beacon by a directional antenna and measures the distance and the angle of arrival.
We assume the distribution of the measurement errors to be a normal distribution, and the system calculates the existence probabilities of each pedestrian at each point. By exchanging information of the probabilities between cars, the area with high existence probability is narrowed down. In this paper, we first describe the situations where detecting positions of pedestrians greatly contribute to pedestrian safety, and then we describe the probability model used in our method, the method for calculating existence probabilities from information from multiple cars, and the protocol for exchanging the probability information between cars. We evaluated our method on QualNet simulator, and confirmed that the positions can be detected accurately enough for practical uses.

Ness's Chief Innovation Officer, Kuruvilla Mathew, gives his expert take on how Swarm Intelligence can be employed to fix traffic problems and prevent "Carmageddon"
Recently, rates of vehicle ownership have risen globally, exacerbating problems including air pollution,
lack of parking, and traffic congestion. While many solutions to these problems have been proposed,
Carpooling is one of the most effective solutions to this problems Recently, several carpooling
platforms have been built on cloud computing systems, with originators posting online list of
departure/arrival points and schedules from which participants can search for rides that match their
needs. In this paper, an improved carpool system is described in detail and called the improved
intelligent carpool system (IICS), which provides car poolers the use of the carpool services via a smart
handheld device anywhere and at any time. This IICS Consist the geographical, traffic, and societal
information and used to manage requests and find minimum route. We apply advanced genetic-based
carpool route and matching algorithm (AGCRMA) for this multiobjective optimization problem called
the carpool service problem (CSP).
Traffic flow measurement for smart traffic light system designTELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Determining congestions on intersection roads can significantly improve the performance of a traffic light system. One of the everyday problems on our roads nowadays is the unbalanced traffic on different roads. The blind view of roads and the dependency on the conventional timer-based traffic light systems can cause unnecessary delays on some arterial roads on expense of offering a needless extra pass time on some other secondary minor roads. In this paper, a foreground extraction model has been built in MATLAB platform to measure the congestions on the different roads constructing an intersection. Results show a satisfactory performance in terms of accuracy in counting cars and in consequence reducing the wait time on some major roads. System was tested under different weather and lighting conditions, and results were adequately promising.

Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) unveiled 5 new light rail alternatives for Project Connect on an open house March 21, 2023. These alternatives differ greatly from the original plan proposed to voters in 2020 when the project was overwhelmingly authorized through a property tax increase. The original plan promised an underground light rail system downtown and an airport connection, now both seem to be unlikely.
ATP must re-evaluate core principles of the project to stay on budget, deliver transit connectivity promised to the voters, and create the backbone for a 21st century transit system for the region.
Light rail is too expensive, too slow, lacks regional expansion potential, and will be instantly outdated when implemented.
eBRT is already authorized by the ballot language and the contract with the voters. No additional elections are required for this change. When paired with the future potential of AEV transit, this approach provides the best solution for Austin today and in the future.
eBRT provides a reliable system backstop if AEV technology does not advance as quickly as projected. eBRT by itself would provide better, faster, and cheaper to operate service than LRT.
An AEV system with a tunneled backbone will have major equity benefits across the City and regionally, replacing existing transit lines with superior service.
To maximize the project benefit, the system must provide regional connectivity in addition to connectivity with the City of Austin. The lower cost per mile to deploy eBRT and AEV enables a larger and more connected system to be built today and in the future.
This is an opportunity to cement Austin as the global center for transit innovation.
Techniques for Smart Traffic Control: An In-depth ReviewEditor IJCATR
Inadequate space and funds for the construction of new roads and the steady increase in number of vehicles has prompted
scholars to investigate other solutions to traffic congestion. One area gaining interest is the use of smart traffic control systems (STCS)
to make traffic routing decisions. These systems use real time data and try to mimic human reasoning thus prove promising in vehicle
traffic control and management. This paper is a review on the motivations behind the emergence of STCS and the different types of
these systems in use today for road traffic management. They include – fuzzy expert systems (FES), artificial neural networks (ANN)
and wireless sensor networks (WSN). We give an in depth study on the design, benefits and limitations of each technique. The paper
cites and analyses a number of successfully tested and implemented STCS. From these reviews we are able to derive comparisons of
the STCS discussed in this paper. For instance, for a learning or adaptive system, ANN is the best approach; for a system that just
routes traffic based on real time data and does not need to derive any data patterns afterwards, then FES is the best approach; for a
cheaper alternative to the FES, then WSN is the least costly approach. All prove effective in traffic control and management with
respect to the context in which each of them is used.

REAL-TIME PATH PLANNING BASED ON HYBRID-VANET-ENHANCED
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
ABSTRACT:
Real-time path planning can efficiently relieve traffic congestion in urban scenarios.
However, how to design an efficient path-planning algorithm to achieve a globally optimal
vehicle traffic control still remains a challenging problem, particularly when we take drivers’
individual preferences into consideration. In this paper, we first establish a hybrid intelligent
transportation system (ITS), i.e., a hybrid-VANET-enhanced ITS, which utilizes both vehicular
ad hoc networks (VANETs) and cellular systems of the public transportation system to enable
real-time communications among vehicles, roadside units (RSUs), and a vehicle-traffic server in
an efficient way. Then, we propose a real-time path-planning algorithm, which not only
improves the overall spatial utilization of a road network but reduces average vehicle travel cost
for avoiding vehicles from getting stuck in congestion as well. A stochastic Lyapunov
optimization technique is exploited to address the globally optimal path-planning problem.
Finally, the transmission delay of the hybrid-VANET-enhanced ITS is evaluated in VISSIM to
show the timeliness of the proposed communication framework. Moreover, system-level
simulations conducted in Java demonstrate that the proposed path-planning algorithm
outperforms the traditional distributed path planning in terms of balancing the spatial utilization
and drivers’ travel cost.

EXISTING SYSTEM:
In Real-time monitoring and control on signalized arterials, a traffic management system
with loop detectors for continuous traffic measurement and monitoring along arterials is
introduced. However, inevitable drawbacks cast a shadow on the application of cellular systems
and loop detectors. For cellular systems, as they are not dedicated for traffic data collection, the
collection services can be highly costly, and the high volume of traffic data may also cause
congestion for other cellular services. For the loop detectors, the deployment expense can also be
very high. Moreover, the inaccuracy of position measurement becomes a problem for short-
distance transmissions particularly in dense networks, which will degrade the performance of
path planning.
DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEM:
Cannot make quick response to an emergency or congestion due to a sudden accident
Not dedicated for traffic data collection
The collection services can be highly costly
PROPOSED SYSTEM:
In this project, a globally optimal path-planning algorithm is proposed for vehicles to
avoid traffic congestion (including those caused by accidents) in a suburban scenario. With the
real-time traffic information collection and decision delivery enabled by a hybrid-VANET-
enhanced network, the road network resources are fully utilized, and the average travel cost of
vehicles is significantly reduced. In addition, the impacts of VANETs on the path-planning
algorithm are further discussed. First, to facilitate the application of real-time path planning, we
propose a hybrid-VANET-enhanced ITS framework, exploiting both the VANETs and the public
transportation system. Second, we design a real-time global path-planning algorithm to not only
improve network spatial utilization but also reduce average vehicle travel cost per trip. A low
