4. QUESTIONING TO UNDERSTAND
⮚ WHEN I WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I
READ, I ASK MYSELF: WHAT IS THE TEXT
ABOUT? WHAT KIND OF TEXT IS IT?
⮚ I CAN START LOOKING THE TITLE AND
SOME IMAGES.
5. QUESTIONING TO UNDERSTAND
► IN THIS TECHNIQUE, YOU CAN WRITE SOME DOUBTS ABOUT THE TEXT, THIS
CAN OCCUR:
✔ BEFORE READING.
✔ DURING READING.
✔ AFTER READING.
► THINKING STEMS:
✔ I WONDER THAT…
✔ WHAT IF…?
✔ I THINK THE TEXT IS ABOUT…
✔ WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT ADVENTURES? HISTORY? MAGIC?, ETC.
6. SKIMMING

BECAUSE YOU CAN IDENTIFY GENERAL INFORMATION AND MAIN IDEAS.
7. SKIMMING
Note: this
technique is
used to obtain
general
information
(not in detail).
EXAMPLE OF SKIMMING:
Tatterbridge
The beautiful village of Tatterbridge was home to the
children’s writer Jane Potter, whose stories of Benjamin Bear
are loved by adults and children around the world. Jane
Potter’s home is now a museum and tea shop, and is well
worth a visit just for its wonderful gardens. It also has a gift shop
where you can buy souvenirs and books. Tatterbridge has a
number of interesting shops including an excellent cake shop,
and ‘Wendy’s Giftshop’ where you can find lots of unusual
gifts made by hand by local artists. Lovers of Jane Potter’s
books should also walk to the Green Valley woods, which
have not changed since Jane Potter wrote her stories there
one hundred years ago.
To get to Tatterbridge, take Bus 4 from outside the cinema. It
takes about 40 minutes to get there.
8. ► WHAT IS SCANNING?
IT CONSISTS IN LOOKING FOR SPECIFIC WORDS OR IDEAS, BEFORE
READING.
► WHERE?
IN THE ENTIRE TEXT (ALL PARAGRAPHS).

SCANNING
9. SCANNING
EXAMPLE OF SCANNING:

technique is
used to obtain
general
information
(not in detail).
Camberwell
The historic village of Camberwell was once the home of the
wealthy Hugo family. They lived in a huge country house,
Camberwell Court, and owned all the land in the area. The family
sold their house in the 1940s, and it is now open to the public. You
can spend a whole day walking around the house and gardens.
There is a small exhibition about the family, a children’s play area, a
gift shop and a restaurant. But the village of Camberwell is also
worth a visit. There are some beautiful cottages with well kept
gardens, and there is a small church which dates back to the
eleventh century. To get to Camberwell, take Bus 46 from the Bus
station. Buses leave every two hours.
10. ► WHEN I STARTED TO READ (WHILE READING), I COULD PREDICT:
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT? BECAUSE THE CHARACTERS
AND SITUATIONS ARE ALREADY KNOWN.
► SO YOU CAN ASK:
✔ WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?
✔ THE CHARACTER WILL TAKE THIS DECISION…
✔ NOW THIS OTHER CHARACTER WILL APPEAR…
✔ I THINK HE IS GOING TO DO THIS NEXT…
PREDICTING
11. ► BENEFITS OF PREDICTING:
✔ YOU CAN GUESS CORRECTLY AND MOTIVATE YOUR READING.
✔ YOU CAN GUESS NOT SO GOOD BUT ALSO IS MOTIVATING
BECAUSE IT SHOWS THE OPPOSITE ON WHAT YOU MAY EXPECT.
✔ IT IS HELPFUL TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE STORY.
PREDICTING
Note: if you fail in
some predictions
DON’T WORRY!
It doesn’t mean
that you couldn’t
understand the
story.
12. ► IN THIS TECHNIQUE, I CONNECT WHAT I ALREADY KNOW TO THE
NEW INFORMATION TO UNDERSTAND BETTER MY READING (WHILE
READING).
► THINKING STEMS:
✔ THIS REMINDS ME… OF… BECAUSE…
✔ THIS REMINDS ME THE BOOK OF…
✔ THIS HAPPENED TO ME WHEN…
✔ I’VE SEEN THIS BEFORE WHEN…
MAKING CONNECTIONS
13. ► HOW?
✔ THROUGH LITERARY MESSAGES WHICH YOU CAN WRITE IN YOUR TEXT.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
14. ► WHEN I UNDERSTAND AND CONNECT MYSELF WITH THE STORY
(WHILE READING), I CAN VISUALIZE WHAT IS HAPPENING.
► THINKING STEMS:
✔ I AM PICTURING…
✔ I AM FEELING…
✔ I AM VIZUALIZING…
✔ I CAN IMAGINE…
✔ I AM SEEING…
VISUALIZING
15. ► I CREATE PICTURES IN MY MIND, I SEE WHAT I READ, I FEEL WHAT I READ, I USE MY
SENSES. ALL THIS, TO GO DEEPER AND ENJOY BETTER MY READING.
► EXAMPLE:
VISUALIZING
Hidcot
Hidcot is an attractive village situated on the River Owell. Wildlife lovers should
visit the Nature Park to the south of the village, where there are large numbers of
rare birds and flowers. However, you will probably see plenty of wildlife from the
bridge in the village centre! In Hidcot, you can take a two-hour river cruise - a
great way to see the countryside and learn about the local wildlife from a guide.
If you prefer to explore the river by yourself, it’s well worth walking one and a half
miles along the river to the pub ‘The Boat’ which cannot be reached by road.
Here, you can hire small boats and explore the river at your leisure. To get to
Hidcot, take Bus 7A to Reeford. Hidcot is half way between Hartbridge and
Reeford.
17. ► WHEN THE AUTHOR DOESN’T ANSWER MY QUESTIONS, I HAVE TO
INFER.
► WHEN YOU READ, YOU ALSO START QUESTIONINGING TO DRAW
CONCLUSIONS (BECAUSE THE AUTHOR DOESN’T EXPRESS HIS
IDEA DIRECTLY), MAKING PREDICTIONS AND REFLECTING ON
YOUR READING.
► THIS OCCURS IN:
✔ WHILE READING.
✔ POST READING.
INFERRING
18. ► THINKING STEMS:
✔ MAYBE…
✔ PERHAPS…
✔ I THINK…
✔ I GUESS…
► EXAMPLE:
INFERRING
19. ► WHEN OUR BRAIN UNDERTAND THE INFORMATION, THEN WE
ARE ABLE TO SUMMARIZE.
► ONCE YOU END YOUR READING (POST READING), AND ALL THE
READING TECHNIQUES ARE FOLLOWED, IT’S TIME TO SHARE THE
STORY WITH YOUR OWN WORDS.
► START REVIEWING WHAT HAPPENED (important parts) AND
WHAT YOU LEARNED.
SUMMARIZING
THIS IS JUST
THE
BEGINNING
…
20. SUMMARIZING
► THINKING STEMS:
✔ NOW I KNOW…
✔ THE TEXT WAS ABOUT…
✔ I LEARNED…
✔ THE IMPORTANT DETAILS ARE…
✔ THE FUNNY PART WAS…
► THEN, FOLLOWING THESE EXAMPLES YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PRODUCE A
GOOD SUMMARY.
