This document introduces the New Zealand Curriculum Reading and Writing Standards for years 1–8. It contains three parts: an introduction, information about unpacking and using the standards, and the standards themselves. The introduction discusses how the standards relate to effective literacy practice and the New Zealand Curriculum. It explains that the standards address the complexity and challenge of texts and tasks students need to engage with to meet curriculum demands. The section on unpacking the standards provides background on their theoretical basis and how to assess students and support different learners. The standards are presented in the third part with examples illustrating student work.
