ReachOut NextStep can help simplify this process and provide a starting point.

  2. - We’re an online Youth Mental Health organisation with a mission to help young Australians be happy and well
  3. - RO was started 18yrs ago by a group of friends in response to the rising rates of suicide To use the internet to connect young people with hope and support
  4. In Australia it id the first port of call for advice and support for young people in Australia
  5. - Our young people need support
  6. - Our goal is to bring these statistics down
  7. We identified one of the problems to be levels of help-seeking particularly at early stages of a mental health issues Although ReachOut is a gateway service and really helpful for low severity issues, the majority of our visitors already have high levels of distress
  8. We asked young people and we found the following: ACCESS Not knowing where and how to access services AUTONOMY Wanting to fix it themselves / feeling it’s weak to seek help AWARENESS Lack of awareness about what's going on and what services are available CONFIDENTIALITY Concerns about confidentiality, judgement, being a burden FEAR Fear of the unknown, not knowing what to expect VALIDATION Unsure about whether the issue is serious enough
  9. - Partnered with the University of Melbourne and the Young and Well CRC With the objective of - Development and evaluation of an online tool which: Facilitates help-seeking through the Australian mental health landscape for young people (and those who care for them)
  10. - From the very beginning our approach was made up of four inter-related key areas - Although we started from theory - We focused on a user led design and development process which always prioritised young people
  11. We then worked with young to identify how we might achieve this and came up with a set of User Experience goals
  12. The key theory at the core of the project is Rickwoods theory of help-seeking which we used a starting point This theory aligns well with the
  13. - Cosultation/ - Partnership Expertise Effective use of sector resources by ensuring young people are directed to the right service at the right time – reducing duplication, onward referral and uptake of high-intensity/F2F services where these are not required.
  14. Foundation for triage/allocation model developed Minimum Viable product developed Acceptability testing
  15. Participant ratings for the tool were consistently higher than the control, immediately, at one and three-months Showed decrease negative affect (PANAS) after 1 mnth and 3mnth Improved quality of live (AQOL) No harms were detected Although we where working on the live product in parallel, the outcome of the RCT were critical in giving us the green light to push the product live.

Step 02 – A place to start - Give me choice only they will know what they are ready to work on Step 03 – Personalising - this has a double purpose of helping the user understand and think through how much the issues are affecting them and also feeds into the algorithm that provides personalised support options
  18. Step 04 – - Recommends but also gives options - Prepares a young person to seek the right type of help - Makes it easy to connect - Sets expectations
  19. 1. The community and mental health sector is (understandably) risk-adverse in nature. This was often in contrast with user research and development which needed to be fast paced. Use MVPs and Prototypes 2. Ensuring we brought some participants along with us for the entire journey as well as consulting unengaged users provided the most helpful insights. 3. Accept that stakeholders won’t always take your word for it. Pick your battles then gather data to build a case 4. This must be considered at the beginning of the project – partner with the right organisations 5. Users can start to achieve the objectives of validating their feelings, providing a sense of hope and showing them that they are not alone at any step in the process this means that standard success metrics need to be re-defined.
