Intended Learning Outcomes: - Learn more about the developing institutional and national OER infrastructures supported by JISC - Discuss how these can be streamlined across the sector and improved/adapted to more fully support subject specific requirements (e.g. health) Abstract: The ALPS CETL repository project (ACErep) is examining the requirements of a repository infrastructure in local, regional and national contexts to more effectively facilitate sharing and reuse of appropriately licensed medical teaching, learning and assessment material. Three institutions in the ALPS consortium - the University of Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan University and York St John University - all use different commercial platforms for their teaching and learning repositories. In addition there is the national HE/FE repository Jorum, and the NHS National eLearning Repository (NeLR), Informed by a user-group of institutional stakeholders, the goal of ACErep is to develop a clearly branded web-site from where staff at the respective institutions can: deposit resources into their own institutional repository cross-search the repositories from a single interface In addition, we have developed ties with the JISC funded PORSCHE project at Newcastle University which aims to provide seamless access to academic and clinical learning resources for healthcare students primarily from the respective collections in Jorum and the NeLR. The project utilises well-established repository technologies and has adapted an Open Source client to differentially deposit into a user’s institutional repository and liaised with Jorum to harvest metadata from multiple repositories. ACErep and PORSCHE are also working with Jorum on their development of an Open API (Application Programming Interface) upon which we can build a bespoke search portal. This work, in turn, builds on a prototype developed in collaboration with the Xpert repository at Nottingham University. This approach will have the benefit of digital assets being preserved in one location (an institutional repository) while providing multiple points of access as well as allowing the ALPS branded web-site and the institutional repositories to “piggyback” on Jorum’s Google pagerank thereby improving discoverability. The presentation will comprise a summary of the ACErep project to date; the emphasis will not be technical though technical implications and requirements will be discussed.

As the fight for research grants intensifies and the pot of money decreases, librarians need to ensure that the topic of scholarly communication remains on the forefront, regardless of funding. Affording researchers avenues to widely share and publish their work to make it widely available should be a mission both in the library and at the highest levels of the institution. How can libraries make an impact? In this presentation two librarians, a consortia officer and vendor, will discuss how consortia have and continue to play a primary role in advocating for dissemination of information and scholarly communication. Additionally, they will discuss other tools that libraries/researchers can use as a method of collaboration, whether regional or international, and why it is essential for libraries to become part of the solution before they are left out in the cold. Please come prepared to discuss how your library is making an impact on this topic. Anne McKee Program Officer for Resource Sharing, Greater Western Library Alliance McKee received her M.L.S. from Indiana University, Bloomington and has had a very diverse career in librarianship. She has been an academic librarian, a sales rep for two subscription agencies and now a consortium officer for the past 13 years. A former President of NASIG, McKee is on the Serials Review Editorial Board, 3 publisher/vendor library advisory boards and strives to balance a busy career with an even busier family including a husband, 1 high schooler, 1 middle schooler, 2 dogs while being a first year newbie [and admittedly a rather bewildered] club volleyball mom: all this including wearing orthodontia! McKee is probably the only person you’ll meet with both an undergrad AND MLS in Library Science. Christine M. Stamison Senior Customer Relations Manager, Swets Addison, IL Christine Stamison, Senior Customer Relations Manager for Swets, has worked in various positions in the subscription agent industry for the past 20 years. Previously, she worked for 13 years in academic libraries, primarily in Serials, at both the University of Illinois at Chicago and at the University of Chicago Libraries. Christine received her Masters in Library and Information Services from Rosary College (now Dominican University) and is a regular lecturer for serials, collection development and technical services classes. When not working you can find Christine in the gym working with her trainer trying to get in shape for her upcoming vacation hiking up Machu Picchu and trekking around Easter Island.

All R&D organizations classify their research activities, either implicitly (e.g., by laboratory or department) or explicitly (e.g., by creating taxonomies to define and map research disciplines and domains). However the lack of clear standards for doing so impedes the sharing and aggregation of data on R&D activities. In this workshop, Jeff Alexander and Patrick Lambe will provide an overview of the organizational needs driving the development of a classification of R&D activities, use cases for such a classification, and the potential advantages of international coordination across such classifications. The workshop, based heavily on a study they conducted for the National Center for Science & Engineering Statistics at the U.S. National Science Foundation, will review alternate approaches to both developing R&D classifications, and streamlining the process of classifying research programs and projects. Topics to be covered include examples of international R&D classifications and their development (such as the Australia-New Zealand Standard Research Classification), design principles for R&D classifications, and new automated and semi-automated classification techniques using semantic analysis and machine learning.

Over the past 10 years, research systems have evolved from systems that focused on how to structure and record information on research, to systems capable of allowing significant insights to be derived based upon years of high quality information. In 2015, the maturity of the information now collected within many Current Research Information Systems, and the insights that this can provide is of equal or greater value than the insights that could be gleaned from established externally provided research metrics platforms alone. The ability to intersect these external and internal worlds provides new levels of strategic insight not previously available. With the addition of platforms that track altmetrics, and their ability to connect university publications data with a constant flow of real time attention level metrics, an image of a dynamic network of systems emerges, connected together by ever turning ‘cogs’ pushing and translating information. Add to this, the success of ORCID as pervasive researcher identifier infrastructure, and CASRAI as the emerging social contract for information exchange, and it becomes possible to extend this network back from the systems that track and record research information, through to the platforms through which research knowledge is created. The ‘Mechanics’ of this network of systems is more than just getting the ‘plumbing’ right. As research information moves through the network, its audience and purpose changes, the requirements for contextual metadata can also change. This presentation will explore the lived experience of Research Data Mechanics at Digital Science though illustrating how connections between Figshare, Altmetric, Symplectic Elements, and Dimensions can both enhance research system capability and reduce the burden on researchers, and research administration.

When we say “Research Impact” many things come to mind and the reasons for why we are concerned with it vary. The underlying concepts are complex and often require expert knowledge, and there is also no one single interpretation or answer. Stakeholders are diverse and so are the means of communication. Therefore across Canada, we continue to seek more consistent and harmonized ways of telling the “Impact Story.” The panel will reflect on harmonization efforts across provinces.
