RAPID
URBANIZATION LEADING TO LOSS
OF WATER BODIES IN HYDERABAD
Presented By
P Manisha (M.Sc student OU)
M.Kamraju (Researcher dept. of
Geography , Hyd)
Introduction
• A lake is an area of variable size filled with
water, localized in a basin that is surrounded
by land, apart from any river or other outlet
that serves to feed or drain the lake.
• Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or
streams, which are usually flowing.
• Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and
streams.
• Hyderabad is the joint capital of the southern
Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
• Occupying 650 square kilometres (250 sq. mi)
along the banks of the Musi River, it has a
population of about 6.7 million and a
metropolitan population of about 7.75 million,
making it the fourth most populous city and sixth
most populous urban agglomeration in India.
• At an average altitude of 542 metres (1,778 ft.),
much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain
around artificial lakes, including Hussain Sagar —
predating the city's founding — north of the city
centre.
Methodology
• Secondary data such as profile of GHMC (
greater Hyderabad municipal corporation ) ,
climatic details, population data , number of
lakes, rate of urbanization has been collected
from GHMC , various websites, journals ,
books , articles of newspapers ( The Hindu,
Indian express, Frontline) and geography
department library of Osmania university
Urbanisation in Hyderabad
• The greater Hyderabad area (GHA) is among south
India’s fastest growing urban conglomerations,
with a population of 6.8 million people (census
2011).
• the last 10 years the state has set in motion a
number of infrastructure-based development
projects, including; a new international airport,
Fab city, a planned hub for advanced
semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, for
which the government has dedicated some 1050
acres of land and an eight lane outer ring road 162
km in length.
• Meanwhile the real estate sector in the GHA has
been experiencing a boom
Study area
• Hyderabad is a creation of the first twin city of
Golconda-Hyderabad, and then come
Golconda, Hyderabad Secunderabad concept,
followed by the huge cantonments of the
Nizam and the British.
• The general land- use of the old Hyderabad is
confined largely in South, East and a vast
North East with Osmania University, Railways,
NGRI, NFC, E.C.I.L., and several small and
medium sized industries and institutions.
• The latitude and longitude for the study of
area of Hyderabad city and environs extends
from (17° 15´ 30´´, 78° 15´ 00´´) to (17° 40´
15´´, 78° 40´ 15´´).
• The Hyderabad Urban Development Area
(HUDA) is around 1865 sq.km.
• The HUDA area is divided into 29 planning
zones (11 Zones inside municipal limits and 18
zones in the non-municipal limits or peripheral
areas).
Analysis
• The issue of urban sustainability is rapidly generating
into a critical issue because of the rapid pace of
urbanization and its associated socio-economic and
environmental impacts that are unprecedented.
• The lifestyle of the urban population demands a
large amount of natural resources, which are
exploited and being depleted at a very rapid pace to
provide for housing and other essential needs of an
ever growing and demanding population.
• However, the quest for satisfying changing
consumption behaviour will negatively affect the
environment, which would eventually lead to a
deterioration of the lifestyle of the people.
• Owing to the fast rate of urbanization and
industrlization the lakes of Hyderabad which was
• unpolluted and was being used as drinking water
source for the city until 1930’s gradually
• became receptacle of sewage and industrial
effluents discharge into the Nalla from its
watershed area.
• The Hyderabad city over the years experienced the
immersion of Ganesh and Durga idols during the
vinayaka Chaturthi and dussera season.
• The idols ranging from 1feet to 60feets are installed at
the junctions of colonies and prominent places of
worship for 10 days.
• After the worship period there idols are taken on
procession with large gatherings of people foe
immersion into the lakes.
• These idols along with flowers , leaves and other Pooja
material are immersed in to the lake water.
• Around 20 to 30 thousand idols (20-30idols from ou
campus) with decorative materials are unloaded in to
the lake water to cause increase in pollution of water
level
• Overflowing and foul-smelling sewage,
hazardous materials, weeds and shrubs, all
infested with disease-causing mosquitoes.
• This is the state of most of the lakes in
Greater Hyderabad, causing untold hardships
to residents living near them.
• According to official statistics, there are about
169 lakes under Greater Hyderabad Municipal
Corporation (GHMC) limits and about 300
under Hyderabad Metropolitan Development
Authority (HMDA) limits.
• While most part of these lakes and water bodies
are encroached, the remaining have been
contaminated causing severe problems to the
residents in areas surrounding the lakes.
• “The lakes in the city are completely neglected.
• The sewage from surrounding colonies is let out
into the lakes.
• In case of Nacharam lake (Pedda Cheruvu), even
industrial effluents are let into lake.
• Sewage and hazardous materials seep into the
ground and contaminate the groundwater in the
area.
• Besides, mosquitoes have become
uncontrollable, as the lake has turned a
breeding ground,” complained K Babu Rao, a
resident of East Kalyanpuri, Uppal.
• Due to contamination of Nacharam lake, colonies
in the area like North Kalyanpuri, Giri Colony,
Balaji Colony, Chilukanagar, parts of Uppal are
affected.
• Similar complaints echo across residents staying
near hundreds of small and big water bodies in
Hyderabad.
• While HMDA is entrusted with the protection of
lakes, GHMC is responsible for addressing the
mosquito menace.
Causes of Water insecurity in
Hyderabad
• Massive development in real estate due to IT industries
• Heavy Demand on water resources
• Severe water shortage and lack of access to water for the poor in
lower socio-economic agglomerations
• The private tanker industry has flourished, and is rampantly
extracting water to sell outside for commercial use
• The city has cascade of lakes which are in bad condition – 3084
lakes in HMDA’s core areas itself, many more in peri urban areas
(data available – about 500)
• Urban areas have lost several lakes during the process of
development, which were earlier natural sources of water for
drinking and irrigation
• Sewerage water is diverted in the lakes which leads to pollution,
Ground water contamination and diseases
Conclusion
• Hyderabad was largely a tourist destination however with
globalization and the emergence of the IT services enabled
industries during the 1990’s the newly created economic
opportunities saw an influx of population from neighbouring
state and rural regions resulting in unplanned urbanisation ,
environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity Cities
occupy just 2 percent of the Earth's surface, while their
inhabitants use 75% of the planet's natural resources.
• Urban environment has the highest density of human
population. Urban areas, increase by about 1.5km2 every day.
(UN 2009)
• It is through day to day human activities which adversely
impact biodiversity and local actions are the most effective
medium through which the situation can be addressed most
efficiently.

RAPID URBANIZATION LEADING TO LOSS OF WATER BODIES IN HYDERABAD

  • 1. RAPID URBANIZATION LEADING TO LOSS OF WATER BODIES IN HYDERABAD Presented By P Manisha (M.Sc student OU) M.Kamraju (Researcher dept. of Geography , Hyd)
  • 2. Introduction • A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. • Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. • Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
  • 3. • Hyderabad is the joint capital of the southern Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. • Occupying 650 square kilometres (250 sq. mi) along the banks of the Musi River, it has a population of about 6.7 million and a metropolitan population of about 7.75 million, making it the fourth most populous city and sixth most populous urban agglomeration in India. • At an average altitude of 542 metres (1,778 ft.), much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain around artificial lakes, including Hussain Sagar — predating the city's founding — north of the city centre.
  • 4. Methodology • Secondary data such as profile of GHMC ( greater Hyderabad municipal corporation ) , climatic details, population data , number of lakes, rate of urbanization has been collected from GHMC , various websites, journals , books , articles of newspapers ( The Hindu, Indian express, Frontline) and geography department library of Osmania university
  • 5. Urbanisation in Hyderabad • The greater Hyderabad area (GHA) is among south India’s fastest growing urban conglomerations, with a population of 6.8 million people (census 2011). • the last 10 years the state has set in motion a number of infrastructure-based development projects, including; a new international airport, Fab city, a planned hub for advanced semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, for which the government has dedicated some 1050 acres of land and an eight lane outer ring road 162 km in length. • Meanwhile the real estate sector in the GHA has been experiencing a boom
  • 6. Study area • Hyderabad is a creation of the first twin city of Golconda-Hyderabad, and then come Golconda, Hyderabad Secunderabad concept, followed by the huge cantonments of the Nizam and the British. • The general land- use of the old Hyderabad is confined largely in South, East and a vast North East with Osmania University, Railways, NGRI, NFC, E.C.I.L., and several small and medium sized industries and institutions.
  • 7. • The latitude and longitude for the study of area of Hyderabad city and environs extends from (17° 15´ 30´´, 78° 15´ 00´´) to (17° 40´ 15´´, 78° 40´ 15´´). • The Hyderabad Urban Development Area (HUDA) is around 1865 sq.km. • The HUDA area is divided into 29 planning zones (11 Zones inside municipal limits and 18 zones in the non-municipal limits or peripheral areas).

  • 9. Analysis • The issue of urban sustainability is rapidly generating into a critical issue because of the rapid pace of urbanization and its associated socio-economic and environmental impacts that are unprecedented. • The lifestyle of the urban population demands a large amount of natural resources, which are exploited and being depleted at a very rapid pace to provide for housing and other essential needs of an ever growing and demanding population.
  • 10. • However, the quest for satisfying changing consumption behaviour will negatively affect the environment, which would eventually lead to a deterioration of the lifestyle of the people. • Owing to the fast rate of urbanization and industrlization the lakes of Hyderabad which was • unpolluted and was being used as drinking water source for the city until 1930’s gradually • became receptacle of sewage and industrial effluents discharge into the Nalla from its watershed area.
  • 11. • The Hyderabad city over the years experienced the immersion of Ganesh and Durga idols during the vinayaka Chaturthi and dussera season. • The idols ranging from 1feet to 60feets are installed at the junctions of colonies and prominent places of worship for 10 days. • After the worship period there idols are taken on procession with large gatherings of people foe immersion into the lakes. • These idols along with flowers , leaves and other Pooja material are immersed in to the lake water. • Around 20 to 30 thousand idols (20-30idols from ou campus) with decorative materials are unloaded in to the lake water to cause increase in pollution of water level
  • 12. • Overflowing and foul-smelling sewage, hazardous materials, weeds and shrubs, all infested with disease-causing mosquitoes. • This is the state of most of the lakes in Greater Hyderabad, causing untold hardships to residents living near them. • According to official statistics, there are about 169 lakes under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and about 300 under Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) limits.
  • 13. • While most part of these lakes and water bodies are encroached, the remaining have been contaminated causing severe problems to the residents in areas surrounding the lakes. • “The lakes in the city are completely neglected. • The sewage from surrounding colonies is let out into the lakes. • In case of Nacharam lake (Pedda Cheruvu), even industrial effluents are let into lake. • Sewage and hazardous materials seep into the ground and contaminate the groundwater in the area.
  • 14. • Besides, mosquitoes have become uncontrollable, as the lake has turned a breeding ground,” complained K Babu Rao, a resident of East Kalyanpuri, Uppal. • Due to contamination of Nacharam lake, colonies in the area like North Kalyanpuri, Giri Colony, Balaji Colony, Chilukanagar, parts of Uppal are affected. • Similar complaints echo across residents staying near hundreds of small and big water bodies in Hyderabad. • While HMDA is entrusted with the protection of lakes, GHMC is responsible for addressing the mosquito menace.
  • 15. Causes of Water insecurity in Hyderabad • Massive development in real estate due to IT industries • Heavy Demand on water resources • Severe water shortage and lack of access to water for the poor in lower socio-economic agglomerations • The private tanker industry has flourished, and is rampantly extracting water to sell outside for commercial use • The city has cascade of lakes which are in bad condition – 3084 lakes in HMDA’s core areas itself, many more in peri urban areas (data available – about 500) • Urban areas have lost several lakes during the process of development, which were earlier natural sources of water for drinking and irrigation • Sewerage water is diverted in the lakes which leads to pollution, Ground water contamination and diseases
  • 16. Conclusion • Hyderabad was largely a tourist destination however with globalization and the emergence of the IT services enabled industries during the 1990’s the newly created economic opportunities saw an influx of population from neighbouring state and rural regions resulting in unplanned urbanisation , environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity Cities occupy just 2 percent of the Earth's surface, while their inhabitants use 75% of the planet's natural resources. • Urban environment has the highest density of human population. Urban areas, increase by about 1.5km2 every day. (UN 2009) • It is through day to day human activities which adversely impact biodiversity and local actions are the most effective medium through which the situation can be addressed most efficiently.
