Rapid e-learning tools promise to allow subject matter experts to quickly create e-learning content. However, the document argues that truly leveraging these tools requires more than just giving experts the tools. While the tools can create sophisticated content, experts often lack the time, instructional design skills, and technical skills needed. Simply handing tools to experts rarely results in successful content and is not a replacement for instructional designers. Rapid e-learning can be effective when used as part of a hybrid approach that leverages internal SMEs, external vendors, and instructional design support.
