The Indian Railways carries over 5.5 lakh passengers daily in reserved accommodations booked through the Computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS), allowing bookings from any of 4000 terminals for journeys throughout India up to 72 hours in advance and thousands of kilometers away. The PRS project was launched in 1985 on the Northern Railway with the installation of an online transaction processing system to provide reserved accommodations on any train from any counter and manage finances. It was subsequently implemented in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata in 1987.
