Racial Separatism Research Paper
Racial separatism is the belief, most of the time based on racism, that different races should remain
segregated and apart from one another. Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or
inferior to another, that his or she predetermines a person's social and moral traits and born
biological characteristics. The introduction of these terms produces racial discrimination within a
society. Racial discrimination has been a thorn in the side of yesterdays, today's and future
generations because of its adverse effect on critical areas of one's life such as healthcare, economics,
wealth and social media. Racial discrimination whether indirect or direct is a part of life that is
constantly being battled with on a daily basis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the 17th century Africans were brought to America and were used as slaves. The slave owners
used them to up keep their properties and land. The most horrific part is when the slaves did not
comply with the owners they would get beaten, tortured, or hung. This was a tactic they would use
to frighten the other slaves. All Africans that were in America were not slaves. The Africans that
were free were unable to own property or vote due to the discriminatory laws that outlawed them
from doing so.
America has had a lengthy negative history in reference to racial relations. From slavery to Jim
Crow, African American's have been subjected to both psychological and physical abuse. One of the
reasons President Johnson signed into law, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was to abolish Jim Crow
and advance the idea of equality. African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and
Hispanic Americans are all subjects of discrimination in the U.S. From then forward there was a
definite upheaval of emotions amongst everyone.
Martin Luther King Jr. lost his life trying to better the lives of African–American people. He was
one of the greatest American Civil Rights leaders of the 1960s. He was born in 1929 in the city of
Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a minister at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. At fifteen
Martin Luther King Jr. was enrolled at Morehouse College. He graduated from there in 1948, and,
like his father wanted to become a minister.

Malcolm X Research Paper
Malcolm X developed the Black Muslim philosophy. The Muslim community in the United States
could identify with their leader and other Muslim members. The Black Muslim time marked a
period in which certain unique values and practices that were familiar only to the black people in the
United States. They can be reference to certain specific values and principles which could not be
found in other Muslims.
According to Muhammad, the then leader of the black Muslims, the white man was the devil for

Malcolm pointed out that if the Africans were to achieve Black Nationalism, it would require them
to have some land of their own. Malcolm X pointed out that there was no need for the Black
Africans to remain complacent that they had a county of their own. He insisted that the United
States was not their country and he himself, though legally an American could not in fact call
himself one. He argued that all the white immigrants and refugees whenever they arrived into the
United States of America became more of Americans at their point of arrival than they Negros who
had acquired nationality of the country by birth. In his view, there would absolutely no reason for a
national legislation to agree that a black American is indeed an American citizen. the road to Black
Nationalism requires them to get some land of their own. Two alternatives present themselves in this
regard: separating themselves from the rest of the American population and getting some portion of
the country as their own or retreating back to Africa. In his view, it looked obvious that the county
would not allow them to leave America as an entire race to Africa. The county would not allow them
to pursue that option, but they could come together and occupy some part of the county where they
would treat each other equally and justly. The land they acquire would be necessary for them to

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Separatism
The politics of Infinite Jest are rooted inside a rich speculative fiction backdrop, but have
surprisingly managed to predict a climate similar to current political America. Soon after the events
that created O.N.A.N. in the novel, Canadians began advocating for separatism. There are a variety
of separatist groups, but the most ubiquitous are Les Assassins en Fauteuils Rollent. A metaphor for
their political attitude, their members deliberately jump back and forth over train tracks while
American trains plow forward. This game steals the legs of young men who have put themselves in
harm's way, and disability is prided over cowardice. Marathe, an AFR member disabled by the Jeu
de Train Prochain, gives a lengthy speech on the how the underlying evils of America are
simultaneous utilitarianism and individualism. By connecting Marathe's limb loss by train and this
speech, he becomes obviously connected to the Trolley Thought Experiment. ... Show more content

This scenario is the most popularly used variation. Comparatively, the "footswitch" variation of the
problem forces test subjects to choose between allowing a train to hit five people or pushing an
uninvolved man onto the tracks to slow the train. A utilitarian would sacrifice one to save the five in
both scenarios. Those who display utilitarian thought in the Trolley Thought Experiment tend to
have decreased sense of responsibility, higher than average levels of testosterone, increased levels of
anger, and low levels of serotonin (Duke). Surprisingly, it is most common in individuals with high
cognitive ability and also prevalent in those suffering cognitive impairment from inebriation

An Autopsy of Nuwaubianism, Black Nationalism, and the Epistemological Concepts Surrounding

The Black man has a long history of slavery, violence and general tension in the United States.
Although there have been amendments to legislation to allow for some equality, there is still
progress to be made. In the meantime, civil rights movements have given birth to organizations such
as Nuwaubianism, that aim to keep the Black community together. Using ethnographic research,
techniques such as field observations, interviews, and literary analysis I will conduct an autopsy of
Black Nationalism relating to the epistemological concepts surrounding Black ... Show more content

The heavy symbolism on paraphernalia in the language of Nuwaup make it difficult for a non–
member to attain the knowledge they seek without membership or reading every single publication.
I recognized some of the esotericism and secrecy had been written in between the lines of the
publications from structures of secret societies such a freemasonry and Orders of the Golden Dawn.
Although I could not fully decipher the mission statement and main objectives of Nuwaubianism, I
was able to get an idea of their sentiments toward race and the position of the Black man in society
today. These revelations came in the form of an interview. The interview was non–traditional in the
sense that I did very little of the talking. A member of the organization mistook me for a fellow
member and began a conversation concerning their thoughts on their indoctrination. The
conversation was fruitful in that it provided sentiments on the outside world wrapped in Nuwaubian
dogma, uninhibited by the censorship normally provided to outsiders. According to the interview, a
Black man 's capacity to flourish relies heavily on the amount of neuromelanin he possesses.
Animism is the original religion of The Black man and paying homage to your ancestors takes the
place of Christianity. The most surprising revelation was the attribution of the white man to

A Classroom Environment Of Other Ethnic Groups
As educators what pluralistic perspective do we use to motivate and encourage our students to learn

Building Cultural Connections:

Knowing and understanding the differences and similarities of beliefs
Barbara T. Bowman, Vice President of Academic Programs at the Erikson
Institute in Chicago, Illinois, expresses the challenge in this manner. "One of the most serious and
explosive issues in the United States today is how to meet the educational needs of culturally and
linguistically diverse students? If current trends in educational achievement continue, millions of
students (primarily poor, African American, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic) will not obtain
the education necessary for full participation in the economic and civic life of the country.
Furthermore, the inequality that results from differences in educational achievement of children is
likely to make the social stability of the United States increasingly doubtful."
How do all ethnic and racial groups in the United States relate to one another? Assimilation is a
process in which formerly distinct and separate groups come to share a common culture and merge
together socially. As a society undergoes

Alice Walker Strength
Alice Walker is able to combine the African American Woman's struggle with lyrical poetry, which
allows her to show her people's pain and suffering in a form that would appeal to a larger audience.
Walker claimed her space as a writer despite the trying factors she has faced. The film, Alice
Walker: beauty in truth, depicted her fight against these obstacles. The most striking points in the
film for me was her strength, her will to fight separatism within the Civil Rights movement, and
how her fight shares many similarities to modern day feminism. Growing up, Alice and her siblings
lived on a plantation where the owner wanted them to spend their lives working on the plantation,
but Alice's mother had different plans. She stood head to head with the owner and demanded her
children receive an education at the local school. Her mother's strength allowed Alice to become the
activist and writer we love today. We all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often times, oppressors can be in one's own movement. Groups can be so focused on changing
white racism, sexism, and oppression, that they are blind to the issues plaguing their own group.
Even when her own culture attacked her, she found strength to keep writing. Meridan, another book
by Walker, is considered the best novel of the Civil Rights movement for the women's perspective.
This perspective is largely overlooked, even in today's culture. We talk of racial oppression and how
that affects the race and family, but the women's perspective is often seen as distracting or disloyal
to the cause. Our society's gender roles place women after the man. Society's pressure on men can
breed hostility inside him. This domino effect falls onto the black women and children. The white

Does Ethnic Diversity Portend the Disuniting of America?
Whether or not "The First Universal Nation" of Ben Wattenberg (Buchanan 466) fixes its meaning?
Despite it is in law, not all people have the same point–of –view about it in practice. George M.
Fredrickson's "Models of American Ethnic Relations: A Historical Perspective" and Patrick J.
Buchanan's "Deconstructing America" essays are typical exemplars. Fredrickson and Buchanan are
famous politicians. "Race in US" is one of popular topics of Fredrickson who used to serve as the
"president of the Organization for American Historians and Stanford University" (Fredrickson 449).
Buchanan is "one of the most influential and outspoken conservative voices in the US... and has

In my opinion, many people, especially foreigners, immigrants, etc also give their hope for the
cultural pluralism which "is healthy and normal condition that does not preclude equal rights and the
mutual understanding about civic responsibilities needed to sustain a democratic nation–state"
(Fredrickson 455). While Fredrickson supports for a diversity society, Buchanan rejects it. His
assessment seems to be obviously different, as he proclaims:
"If we have no common faith and are divided by morality and cultures, and are separated by
ethnicity and race, what holds us together? Especially in light of Putnam's report that 'diversity'
dilutes 'social capital', erodes community, and engenders mutual mistrust." (Buchanan 472)
Buchanan trembles for America. According to him, since we "open our borders in the last forty
years to people of all creeds, cultures, countries, and civilizations" (Buchanan 466), we "threw
away" the old and unique culture, religion, tradition, and history (Buchanan 468). Besides,
Buchanan agrees with John Jay that American are no longer as "one united people, one connected
country, brethren, of common blood" (Buchanan 467).

Malcolm's Identity In The Life Of Malcolm X
Have you ever wonder, what were the three most important changes that Malcolm had during his
life from the beginning to the end? During his life, Malcolm had many attitudes toward his identity
as he changed his name from Malcolm Little to Malcolm X and finally El–Hajj Malik El–Shabazz.
Throughout his experiences as a black human being, he experiences a significant transformation
over the course of the autobiography. Malcolm life becomes a quest to resolve the race issues that
have always surrounded him from his past to his present. When he was Malcolm Little, he can no
longer tolerate being treated as a pet; therefore, Malcolm leaves to the big city to explore his black
identity. As Detroit Red, he becomes a hustler in Boston and Harlem, but he eventually gives
himself up after recognizing the emptiness mind of this fast lifestyle. In prison, Malcolm mature
himself by Elijah Muhammad philosophy and emerges as Malcolm X to get people politically active
by extending the Nation of Islam across the United States. Malcolm lastly becomes known as El–
Hajj Malik El–Shabazz and he starts to focus on developing a global unity between oppressed
individuals in America before he passes away from a gunshot. Therefore, the three important
changes that transformed Malcolm's life was the names that he was remembered by and it was
Malcolm Little, Malcolm X, and El–Hajj Malik El–Shabazz. At the start of his journey, Malcolm
life changed when he was known as Malcolm Little. Malcolm Little

Black Power Impact
Black Power, the seemingly ubiquitous term that is ever–so–often referenced when one deals with
the topic of Black equality in the United States. While progress, or at least the illusion of progress,
has occurred over the past century, many of the issues that continue to plague the Black (as well as
other minority) communities have yet to be truly addressed. Although African–American writers and
politicians used the term "Black Power" for years, the expression first entered the lexicon of the
Civil Rights Movement during the Meredith March Against Fear in the summer of 1966. On that
day, Stokely Carmichael rallied a crowd in Greenwood, Mississippi, with the cry, "We want Black
Power!" Thenceforth, controversy has shrouded the term, reflecting ... Show more content on

Each definition brings with it its own set of experiences, ideologies, and perceptions. Carmichael
defined Black Power as a movement of black people who, furious with their circumstances, decided
that they and they alone would determine the outcome of their lives. King had a similar definition of
Black Power stating that "Power is not the white man's birthright; it will not be legislated for us and
delivered in neat government packages. It is social force any group can utilize by accumulation its
elements in a planned deliberate campaign to organized it under its own control." King simply
thought that Black Power as a slogan was too forceful and created a negative connotation. Peniel E.
Joseph defined Black Power as a constructive force, advancing the cause of black people
everywhere. It is clear that everyone has a different way of defining Black Power from Malcolm X
and The Nation of Islam to Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party for Self–Defense to
Stokely Carmichael and SNCC, each definition is different. At this point in American history, it is
time for the downtrodden people of this nation to decide how to move forward in accomplishing
their goals. Whether or not this movement mirrors the Civil Rights or Black Power will be a
pertinent choice. Remembering the negative repercussions of Black Power, Americans must weight
their options before the fight for change. The only thing that is clear is

Relationship Between Intentionality And Phenomenal...
In order to answer this question thoroughly we must define the key terms in the title, intentionality
and phenomenal character. Intentionality is defined by two separate terms, intentional object and
intentional content. The directedness of our thoughts towards a specific object or state of affairs is
what explains the intentional object. Intentional content refers to aspectual shape, the fact that if we
think of something we must think of it in a certain way. Therefore intentionality and an intentional
state as a whole is the specific way we think of the 'thing' our thoughts are directed to – a belief.
Phenomenal character is simply the 'what its likeness' to be in that state. There is no actual
explanation of phenomenal character, only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rooted in Descartes, he stated that "there can be nothing in the mind ... of which it is not aware, this
seems to me to be self–evident." The main argument put forward by subsequent inseparatists
follows on from this view. They advocate for a mind to be a mind it has to be conscious. Then
deriving that consciousness has a phenomenology and therefore all conscious states, thus all
intentional states, have phenomenology. "A state cannot be conscious without being phenomenal."
Strawson gives the example of cognitive phenomenology, whereby there is something it is like
experientially to understand a proposition. As evidence of this he creates a scenario where a woman
is talking to someone, another person then comes in with a piece of paper filled with black and
white marks. Consequently the woman faints, but what was it about the character of her experience
that made her faint? There could be many explanations of why the woman fainted after seeing a
telegram. However, then main conclusion Strawson draws from this is that in order for mental states
to have content, the belief must be had by a being with phenomenal states. "For a mental state to
have content it must consist of phenomenal properties." Primitive animals undoubtedly experience
intentionality. When they are hungry, their thoughts are directed towards what they want to eat.
However, it is questionable, even unlikely, that primitive animals experience any phenomenal
character. If what

No Cis Men Separatism Essay
No–Cis–Men Separatism
What does it mean when we make spaces for everybody but cis men? Let's talk about gender
separatism. Whether or not we use longer descriptions aimed at framing the message in positive
terms: "This is a space for cis women and transgender people" or "All lesbians, transpeople, bi– and
heterosexual women are welcome" the intent is to create spaces where everybody but cis men can
feel welcome. There was a time when I loved this idea and these spaces. Cis men take up way too
much space in the world. It's a damn relief to know I'm going to a space where I will not have to
deal with that particular type of bullshit. I'd hate to see this type of separatism disappear altogether.
Still, this approach certainly doesn't preclude other varieties of bullshit – and that's the stuff I'd like
to interrogate. Increasingly, I have come to view 'no cis men' separatism as the following: spaces for
anyone assigned female at birth and extremely self–assured and/or well–(queer)networked trans
feminine people. Who actually comes to spaces with this type of separatist policy? Who is
technically included and not showing up? There are many queer communities in Copenhagen. I'm
talking about the one that populates Queer Festival and Queer Sauna... *** This one is extremely
dominated by cis women and trans–masculine people. All transgender people are welcome in theory
but the only a handful of brave trans women actually show up in these spaces with any regularity.

Throughout history there have been many people who have stood out and made an impact in the
way we think and comprehend things. During the late 1950's and early 1960's, Malcolm X was no
exception. His militant views that Western nations were inherently racist and that black people must
join together to build their own society and value system had an important influence on black
nationalist and black separatist movements of the 1950s and 1960s. At the beginning of the movie,
Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little. He was a young child trying to adapt to society's changes. He

Malcolm didn't want to listen to him at first, but Baines's cool style helped Malcolm realize that
Islam is for him and that the white man is the devil. While in prison, Malcolm read widely and
developed an interest in the Nation of Islam, a Black Nationalist religious movement whose
members were known as Black Muslims.
Malcolm studied the teachings of the leader of the Black Muslims, Elijah Muhammad, who
advocated an independent black state. The Nation of Islam was based on a theology adapted from
several models: traditional Islamic teachings principles of Black Nationalism, and economic self–
help programs that addressed the needs of African Americans living in urban ghettoes. Unlike
traditional Islam, which rejects all forms of racism, the Nation of Islam declared that whites were
the "devil by nature," and that God was black. However, the Black Muslims predicted
that in the near future a Great War would take place in which whites would be destroyed and black
people would rule the world through the benevolence of Allah, their creator. To prepare for this new
order, the Nation of Islam stressed personal self–restraint, opposed the use of drugs and alcohol, and
organized economic self–help enterprises that eventually included farms, food stores, restaurants,
and small businesses.
The Black Muslims recruited heavily among the poorest of urban blacks and in prisons, where
Malcolm Little was converted to the faith. Instead

The Benefition Of Education : Discriminated Education
Discriminated Education
How are you capable of becoming intelligent when your education is restrained? If you want to
learn bad enough, you will always find a way. Striving for excellence should be everyone's goal,
your heart is the only limit on what you can do in your life. Not race, nor color, can restrain you
from achieving your life goals.
Equality is something that we as humans will never reach. From education to the political system,
there will always be discrimination against people's decisions. Take Frederick Douglas for example.
He was enslaved to a white family in Maryland 1818. The mother of the household, Mrs. Hugh's,
started off nice, teaching him how to read and write. Mrs. Hugh's later became cruel like all other
slave owners, treating him as if he were a brute. Frederick Douglas, knew he needed to find another
way to learn, so he tricked white boys into giving him learning tools by trading them food. Had
Douglas not had the will to learn, he would have never became the educated man he was.
Malcolm X, Convicted of robbery at the age of 21, "later emerged a spokesman for "black
separatism" a philosophy telling blacks to cut all political, social, and economic ties". – Malcolm. It
wasn't easy for him to get to this point in his life. Having only been 21 and imprisoned, Malcolm X
still had a lot to learn, intrigued on how much one could learn from books, Malcolm spent most of

The Education Of Malcolm X Essay
Literacy is power. Being taught to read and write is important to function in society. You learn to
read and write to express your feelings and communicate with others. Frederick Douglass and
Malcom X both succeeded in learning how to read and write, but in different ways. The education of
Malcolm X was learned more formally. Frederick Douglass learned from his surroundings and the
people around him. Malcom and Frederick battled in reading and writing, but learned in similar and
different ways. During the 1960s, Malcolm X was one of many articulate and powerful leaders of
black America. Before he was a street hustler and spent seven years in prison, where he educated
himself. Before this time, he was almost completely illiterate. He describes how he could hardly
compose a sentence with a straight line or correctly articulates words, let alone read and write. Not
being able to express his thoughts and feelings in the letters he wrote inspired him to educate
himself. Malcolm then became one of the leading spokesman for African American separatism.
Unlike Malcom X Frederick Douglass escaped to New York, where he became a leader in the
abolitionist movement. Frederick was born a slave and couldn't read or write at all. His mistress was
teaching him how to read and write but suddenly was against instructing him so he had to be
strategically deceptive to learn. Despite of their horrible backgrounds, these two men acquired how
to read and write. On the other hand, you would

The province of Quebec has been part of Canada since the very beginning. Quebec, originally a
colony of France, is the only province in Canada with a predominantly french speaking population.
Quebec is an important factor in Canada's diversity, as the culture in Quebec is vastly different than
the rest of Canada. A fact that Canadians are proud of. However, many in Quebec see themselves as
too different, in a sense, from the rest of canada, and believe that Quebec should become its own

While it is possible that Quebec would not do any better by themselves, there is no evidence
pointing to Quebec doing worse on their own, it is possible they would do better (Jacobs 27).
Quebec is referred to by some as a nation within a nation, and in many ways it is. From the
beginning Quebec has been set apart from the rest of Canada, and if Quebec were to separate, it
would not be as devastating as some claim it would be. There would still be existing trade between
Canada and Quebec, and Quebec would gain many economic advantages it currently does not have
(106). Quebec separating would also mean taking their share of the debt with them, about ¼ of the
debt, leaving Canada with significantly less (global–economics). Another benefit to Quebec
separating would be the government no longer having to be careful with what to say or do about
Quebec. Without Quebec, Canada would be a more cohesive, governable political entity

Joint Publication Definition
Joint Publication (JP) 3–24 and Field Manual (FM) 3–24.2 have slightly different definitions of
insurgency. JP 3–34 defines it as the organized use of subversion and violence by a group or
movement that seeks to overthrow or force change of a governing authority. FM 3–24.2 defines it as
a protracted politico–military struggle designed to weaken government control and legitimacy while
increasing insurgent control. I have problems with both definitions. However, I disagree more with
the joint publication. This paper will explain why.
I actually agree with the dictionary definition. According to Webster's, an insurgency is an organized
rebellion aimed at overthrowing a constituted government through the use of subversion and armed
conflict. The joint publication expands the definition by inserting the phrase "or force change of". To
me there are distinctions between insurgency, terrorism, and separatism. On the surface they seem
minor. However, upon further analysis, this seemingly innocuous addition actually blurs those
distinctions.
The word overthrow is clear. It connotes that the goal is for the constituted government to cease to
exist. The means for achieving this desired end state, depending on the ... Show more content on

Forcing change can mean anything from complete overthrow to power sharing to policy shifts. If it
means overthrow, then the phrase is superfluous because that concept was already stated in the
definition. Thus the additional wording adds no value. It only adds confusion. If forcing change
means power sharing or policy concessions, but the constituted government is allowed to remain in
existence, then you have terrorism. The means for achieving this desired end state tends to be
limited wars of attrition. An example of terrorism includes Usama bin Laden and the 911 hijackers,

The Autobiography Of Malcolm X
The Autobiography of Malcolm X was about one African Americans struggle during a time of
extreme racism and discrimination to make a name for himself. Malcolm had many life experiences
before tragically being shot and killed. He was a hustler in Harlem, a porter for a railroad, and was
eventually a minister for the black Islam movement lead by Elijah Mahammad. Malcolm Little lived
a very interesting life to become the man he will be remembered as.
Right before Malcolm was born members of the KKK came to their little home in Omaha, Nebraska
terrorizing his mother. But they were not just there to terrorize her because she was black it was
because of who his father was. His father, Earl Little, would eventually be killed not by the clan but
an equivalent group. Earl was killed because he was a preacher of Marcus Garvey's movement of
being disconnected from the white man and they thought he was causing a disturbance for the "good
black people. The sad part is that no ever was convicted or even brought in for questioning because
they put his body on a street car track and the police just believed it was all an accident. It would
have all could have been prevented if his parents had not been in a fight about eating pork.
Malcolm also had lost his mother but not by death but by the government. After his father's death his
mother slowly started to lose her mind, all she had left in her life was her pride. It took a long time

What are the economic, social and political reasons for Catalonia's desire to secede from Spain?
Since Catalonia's post–Franco reinstatement in 1980, September 11th has been a day to celebrate the
end of the War of the Spanish Succession. La Dia Nacional de Catalunya, or The National Day of
Catalonia, has never been celebrated like it was on September 11th, 2012. An estimated 1.5 million
people demanded independence for Catalonia on the streets of Barcelona, waving the new Catalan
Independence flag. The slogan for the rally was "Catalonia, a new European state". "In November
2014, Catalan nationalists held an unofficial poll, and 80% voted in favor of independence. In
addition to the unofficial vote, Catalan nationalist parties won ... Show more content on

With over 1,000 years of distinct regional history, their own language, a huge population and strong
economy, many Catalan's believe that they are a separate nation already, and want to legitimize it.
Catalan national parties have been a very powerful force in Catalan politics since the reconvention
of the Catalan government, or the Generalitat, in 1977. In 2012, the Generalitat was ruled by the
CiU (Convergéncia I Unió) and Arturo Mas, CiU's leader. Mas's push for an early vote in November
2014 is an example of how Catalan politics are playing a large role in the movement towards
independence. Although many Spaniards argue that Catalonia already has their own regional
government, Catalan's argue that their interests are not properly represented in Madrid. There has
never been a Catalan Prime Minister, and the Catalan's believe that Catalonia will not be served
equally under the Spanish national government.
The objective of my thesis is to better understand the factors that underlie Catalonia's desire to
secede from Spain. Borrowing from academic literature, this thesis will identify the economic,
ethnic/social and political factors that have played a role in the movement towards Catalan
independence. The method for my thesis will be a case study and historical methodology and
possibly a non–participant observation. This methodology will allow me to address the research

Canada 's Changes Through The Decade Of The 1960 's And...
Canada faced dramatic changes through the decades of the 1960's and 1970's, but in particular the
province of Quebec. In 1959, Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis died, this marked the beginning of
the Quiet Revolution. Duplessis was the Union Nationale leader and the party had controlled
Quebec for decades until shortly after Duplessis' death, a provincial election was held where the
Liberals, led by Jean Lesage, had won the vote. The Liberals started moving away from the Catholic
ideologies, traditions were being shifted and a transformed society was taking over the province of
Quebec. Lesage was famously quoted in 1962 "There is no doubt in my mind; it's now or never that
we must become masters in our own home." which became the Liberals ... Show more content on

In the midst of the October Crisis Pierre Trudeau handled the time of terrorism well. In this essay
one will see how Trudeau handled the crisis excellently by examining the first domestic use of the
War Measures Act which led to improvements on the Act, ensuring that Quebec did not become its
own independent country, and how Canada stood behind and supported Quebec and Pierre Trudeau
through the acts of violence led by the FLQ.
On October 16, 1970 Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act. It was the first time this Act had been
invoked in peacetime, although was justified by the evidence of an insurrection. To start off, the first
domestic use of the War Measures Act was invoked which led to improvements on the act. It was
invoked and gives emergency power to the federal government and this act further suspended
Canadians' fundamental civil freedoms. Some civil freedoms include: the right to be protected
against unwarranted or arbitrary arrests, detentions, searches and seizures, and the right to an
attorney. The Act however allowed the government to declare anyone who publicly supported the
FLQ to be a member of the group, arrest and hold any of the FLQ without bail for up to 90 days, and
imprison FLQ member for up to five years. This builds a trust bridge between the government and
the citizens. The citizens have to trust the

The Importance Of The Separation Of Church And State
In 1791, ten amendments were made to the U.S. constitution: The Bill of Rights. The first of these
rights given to the citizens of America is the right to freedom of religion and freedom of the press.
Countless court cases have brought the issue of the separation of church and state to light. Legal
battles and administrative actions in the government have led to conversations about how much
religion should be involved in schools and what power the state has over religion.
The phrase, "separation of church and state" is not found in the U.S. Constitution. On January 1,
1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter titled "Jefferson's Letter to the Danbury Baptists." This letter
was written in response to a letter sent by the Danbury Baptists nearly three months before. The
Danbury Baptist expressed their sentiments at Jefferson's election and their concerns about the
relationship between religion and the state. In the correspondence, Jefferson discussed the
importance of the state being unable to control the religion of the people: "I contemplate with
sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature
should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State" (Jefferson). "A wall of
separation between Church and State" led to the now widely used phrase, "separation of church and
state." The wording of this phrase and the wording in

Quebec Separatism : An Analysis Of Challenging Quebec...
Challenging Quebec Separatism
The relationship between anglophones and francophones in Canada has historically "remained
difficult" (Smith, Ben), dating back to the British colonial leaders and the rulers of French Canada of
1763 (Behiels, M.D.). The shaky relations between the predominantly French–speaking Quebec
province (Corbeil, Jean–Pierre) and the rest of Canada allowed for the movement of the 1980 and
1995 referendums regarding Quebec's independence. Despite Quebec's dual attempt at sovereignty,
the notion of Quebec separatism is one that should be vehemently rebutted. When examining this
controversial topic, it is clear that Quebec sovereignty must be denied based on three cornerstones:
the flawed reasoning behind the movement, the negative repercussions that would occur if such a
change were to be implemented and the analysis of the Quebec and Canadian demographic
regarding the issue.
The Quebec question of independence should be refused as the logic behind the province's pursuit of
sovereignty is somewhat questionable. One of Quebec's foremost justifications for its sovereign
aspirations is the "defense of the French language and Quebec culture" (Why Quebec). Quebec
believes that, although Canada is officially bilingual, the position of the French language is
extremely unstable. Therefore, Quebec seeks to secede from Canada, so that its own government
could have unilateral power over cultural and lingual matters within the province (Why Quebec) in
order to

American Government Policies Promoting Separatism?
Ideally, governmental policies aim to defend citizens of a specific territory by setting laws that
promote and implement egalitarianism. Although the federal government of the United States is said
to strive to construct a homogeneous nation when it comes to equal rights and opportunities for its
citizens in different states and cities, there have been numerous historical occurrences that
demonstrate opposing aims. Often times in American history, unselected natural characteristics such
as race and ethnicity have served as keen factors permitting unequal treatment of individuals and at
creating barriers placing minority groups at a disadvantage when attempting to practice influence
over the government. "Race has been a long–standing and stubborn dividing line in local, state, and
national politics in the United States" (Rogers 6). Because of such instances, today, many political
representatives attempt to practice descriptive representation which promotes racial unity. While this
is an enormous step, indicative of progression, corrupt politicians many times can use such
incentives to implement manipulative and unscrupulous tactics to gain support from minority
groups. In addition, the attempts to form race–based alliances have had very little success amongst
minority groups as racial similarities are not significant enough to unify different minority groups.
Minorities can be said to place themselves at a disadvantage because of their vulnerability and
stubborn inability to

Analyze the reasons for separatism with and/or across national boundaries and discuss its
consequences [40 marks]
Separatism is the advocacy of a state of cultural, ethnic, tribal, religious, racial, governmental or
gender partition from the larger group. While it often refers to full political secession, separatist
groups may seek nothing more than greater autonomy. There are four main types of separatist
groups – religious, ethnic, racial and gender. Separatism "with national boundaries" refers to an
event concerning only one country. Separatism "across national boundaries" refers to an event
concerning more than one country.

They believe that with the gain of independence and new ministers, Scotland's concerns can be
resolved, thus improving standards of living. Secondly, the Additional Member System employed
for elections to the Scottish Parliament is arguably more democratic than the electoral system used
for the House of Commons, so the Scottish electorate would be empowered. Thirdly, control over
defence and foreign policy means Scotland can choose, for example, to no longer have nuclear
weapons in its seas or no longer be part of NATO. This is important factor for Scots, because
Scotland has been against UK's involvement in the Iran–Iraq war. Furthermore, access to North Sea
oil and "vast offshore renewable energy" revenue means greater funding for the Scottish
Government. In addition, Scotland wants to deter a "cultural dawn" for its country (this has been
emphasized by creative pro–independence groups like National Collective). Examples of Scottish
heritage which Scots stand very protective about includes Robert Burns, castles and tartan skirts.
Besides, if Scotland became an independent nation it will mean that it will be able to cut the amount
of taxes that business pay. Similar change has taken place in Ireland, which lead to an increase in the
amount of local independent business. Scottish economist propose that independence will be a
massive benefit do to the downturn which we seem to be in at the moment and something that we

The Opposition Of Quebec Separatism
In recent elections, the separatist parties in Quebec have seen crushing defeats, raising questions
about their relevance in modern day Canada. Support for Quebec separatism has diminished in the
past several decades, with the rise of the NDP in the 2011 federal election and the more recent
provincial Liberal victory in April of 2014. In the 2011 federal election, specifically, the Bloc
Quebecois was reduced to only four seats in the House of Commons, while the NDP took the
majority of Quebec's seats. The provincial Parti Quebecois (PQ) has also been faltering, losing more
often than not to the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ). Indeed, over the past decade, the PLQ has only
lost one election, and has held majorities in many. The most recent election put them back into
power after a short PQ minority government that began in 2012. These recent elections may point to
a future in which the separatist movement in Quebec may be silenced. Since the late 1950s, the
question of Quebec separatism has existed, with levels of support varying throughout the following
decades, leading up the referendums of 1980 and 1995. The defeats suffered by the separatist parties
in recent elections demonstrate that the separatist movement may be close to being over in Quebec.

In a photograph of a 1967 Vietnam War protest in New York, a large crowd was pictured standing
united as one despite the differences of the people themselves (Source B). This is an example of
pathos, because their unity emphasizes that the war was a human issue rather than one pertaining to
a certain segment of society, or even of nationality. The diversity of the protesters also reflects an
unfortunate layer of irony to the government's decision to join the Vietnam War, as most Americans
arrived in the country because of immigration, yet America's interjection into the war and
subsequent use of the chemical Agent Orange caused the displacement of many Vietnamese
civilians. Another feature of note in the image is a young boy, holding a sign declaring that "children
[were] not born to burn" in large black letters (Source B). The correlation between the speaker and
the message is an unmistakable example of pathos, meant to evoke guilt in the government officials
who had chosen to go to war and those watching from their television sets at home. Indeed, in what
was later found to be a war crime, the napalm strikes and use of chemical agents like Agent Orange
gravely injured hundreds of thousands of innocent Vietnamese civilians, yet those who dared to
protest it were seen as favoring Communism and were often subject to mass arrest as a form of
censorship. Just as the Vietnam War protesters spoke out about the injustices they saw in their
society, it is imperative that American citizens retain their freedom of speech so that public
censorship does not occur when addressing future issues; however, arrests and violence against
protesters is still common, indicating that interference with freedom of speech is still a problem

Assimilation Of The United States Constitution Essay
America has the United States Constitution as its map of operation. This Constitution's Preamble
states that "...in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, and insure domestic
tranquility...promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our
prosperity..." If this statement is true, there would be no need to research whether assimilation or
separatism would be ideal for minorities to enjoy domestic tranquility and/ or liberty. As a minority,
we would not have to think about what we lose or gain if we choose assimilation or separatism. In
order for assimilation to occur a minority group becomes an integrated part of the majority group;
this assimilation results in non–distinguishing of one group from another by cultural characteristics.
In order for this process to be complete, it must entail, not only an active effort by the minority
group to shed all distinguishing actions and beliefs, and also complete unqualified acceptance of that
individual by the dominant society. Implementation of this process will gradually integrate the
minority into the system, causing all groups to be culturally similar with their differences no longer
a basis for prejudice from the dominant group. (Dubois, Miley 172) The rationale for assimilation
from the structural sociologist's point of view is that assimilation is the best way to reduce cultural
differences between the dominant group and the majority group. They also insist that there would

Supporting Moral Subjectivism
To begin, the term moral subjectivism implies that beliefs are individualized and correct for the said
individual. In essence, there is no "real" definitive truth that can be applied to moral sentences or
beliefs. For example, two people can have beliefs about the number 13 (or number 4 in the Chinese
culture) One highly religious person can believe it's the devil's number and will lead to murder,
chaos, and violence and for another person, possibly of a different moral code or of time period,
(such as the ancient Egyptians), it can be their lucky or spiritual number. Our text provides four
reasons for supporting moral subjectivism. These reasons include: The fact that feelings are
subjective, often disagreed on, and no one feeling or belief

Another impression that Morgan says is related when he says "they were painfully aware" referring
to the people who left England, that leaving the country was very painful for them because they
knew that it was not probably the solution, but they need and have to do something because what
was going on in England was against their beliefs and that was wrong because people wanted to do
what God's will was.
However, after the people who have moved to Massachusetts there were thought challenges that
were going to be arisen for the residents and for John Winthrop. The first challenge was going to be
Roger Williams. The problem that Williams represented was that he was going against what
Winthrop believed was better for the community which was to not separate from each other. But,
this did not stop Williams, who is being described by Morgan as "a charming, sweet–tempered,
winning man, courageous, selfless, God–intoxicated–and stubborn– the very soul of separatism

finishes saying "the very soul of separatism" which was going to be the challenge for Winthrop

The Quiet Revolution and its Negative Impact on Quebec
In Canadian history, nationalism and sovereignty tend to be common themes prevalent since
Confederation. A well–known example of this in Quebec was during the Quiet Revolution which
strengthened the need for change through Premier Lesage's reforms and in turn, developed a strong
sense of nationalism in Quebec. In contrast to beliefs that the rapid modernization of the Quiet
Revolution had a positive impact on Quebec, it rather had a negative impact on Quebec and its
citizens and identity. The three consequences which arose in Quebec as a result of the revolution are
the encouragement of separatism, the elimination of traditional values and roles and the
establishment of powerful bureaucratic control. Quebec's attempt to be more like the ... Show more

In further analysis, angry people are more likely to listen to militants and commit violent acts,
building a tense environment for Quebec citizens to live in. According to CBC Digital Archives, in
response to the FLQ and other revolutionary groups forming, "when innocent people became injured
from terrorist attacks, the cry for police involvement became shrill." (FLQ Backgrounder Web) It is
evident in this statement that many separatists who resorted to acts of terrorism consequently
stimulated anger and fear in Quebec. If the Quiet Revolution had not occurred and the feelings of
separatism and rise of terrorist groups did not follow, fewer people would have been hurt by the
violence, both directly and indirectly. All things considered, the encouragement of separatism also
weakened English–French relations as Quebec left 30 large shared programs, though the other
provinces did not have the right to do so. All things considered, "from the Quebec Act of 1774 to the
Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canada has protected the place of its French minority. If Quebec
were to separate, that protection would be gone and the Francophone society would be assimilated
by the wider world within a generation or two." (Kheiriddin) In relation to this comment, many
English Canadians viewed Quebec's special status during the revolution as

The Arab-Israeli Conflict and Black-Jewish Relations
Arab/Israeli Conflict and Black–Jewish Relations: In the 1960s, Blacks and Jews had good relations
and a good alliance as they both fought for civil rights together with Martin Luther King. However,
the good relations and alliance soon unraveled after the sixth day of the joint war resulting in many
Blacks accepting and radicalizing the Islamic religion. These people considered the Palestinian's as
their brothers because they shared the same skin color and religion. The good relations between
Blacks and Jews was also affected by the thought that Jews were Zionist or pro–Israel by many
Blacks. Notably, the main event that had a huge impact and effect on the Black–Jewish relations was
the Arab–Israeli conflict.
Black Jewish Relations: Blacks and Jews were natural allies who were able to automatically
empathize with each other's predicament since both groups were once slaves and were constant
victims of discrimination and prejudice. As a result of their good relations, the Jewish people
assumed that any attempt that was less than their good relations with Blacks was a betrayal of the
communities who were sacredly working together to eradicate bias (Shapiro par, 6).
In many cases, the Jewish people tended to disregard the significant sociological and historical
differences between them and Blacks. The good relations between these two communities were also
fueled by the belief by Black people that the Jewish American experience was not similar to theirs.

Nazi Germany In Modern China
The most alarming similarity between Modern China and Nazi Germany appears in their overtly
racist government policies towards their minorities, most notably Jews, in the case of Nazi
Germany. Throughout history, Europeans have reviled the Jewish people. Wherever they went, the
Jews encountered a long history of hatred and persecution directed towards (Wyman and
Rosenzveig 391). That vilifying tradition, along with the generally accepted theories of racial
conflict and Social Darwinism, allowed early twentieth century Germany to foster its anti–semitism
to such an extreme (Owen and Wheatcroft 301–302). These racial doctrines and prejudices were

Without jobs and money, the Jewish people fell into a state of poverty and decrepitude. Thus, the

tried to influence public opinion by repeatedly accusing the Jews of leading an international

writer of the weekly newspaper "Das Reich", in an article titled "The Jews are Guilty!", infamously
declared: "The Jews are our destruction. They started this war [World War II] and direct it ... The

Nazi Party succeeded in effectively convincing the German people to allow their persecution of the

significant persons in the world history. There are a lot of writers who had the opportunity to
contribute something from oneself into Malcolm?s biography. So, Manning Marable had an
important task: not merely describing Malcolm 's life and death within a reliable socio–political
context but literally re–evaluating his life. Life of Reinvention is an amazing work of investigation
done by Manning Marable. He was a professor of history at Columbia University and studied the

Paralleled Ideals between Fredrickson and Jefferson...
Social Contract is a theory that has been studied by many in an attempt to decide if it is modifiable
or unchanging. In Thomas Jefferson's letters to Virginia, he reveals his feelings on the issues of
slavery and the assimilation of Negros into the colonial population. Some of these ideas and beliefs
paralleled in concepts when compared to the theories coined by Fredrickson: Group Separatism,
Ethnic Hierarchy, Cultural Pluralism, and One Way Assimilation. When analyzing Fredrickson's
theories it is easy to identify similarities within the studied beliefs of Jefferson addressed in his
letters to Virginia manuscript, but also you are able to identify differences as well. In his manuscript,
Jefferson philosophies point towards an ethnocentric viewpoint when he talks about the needs and
elitism of the colonial whites. He says that in order to maintain a purer society of whites the negro
slaves must be removed, "This unfortunate difference of color, and perhaps of faculty, is a powerful
obstacle to the emancipation of these people [...] while they wish to vindicate their liberty of human
nature, are anxious also to preserve its dignity and beauty" (Jefferson 105). He hoped that by making
policy around the removal and extradition of the slaves, the moral fabric of the colonies would
remain pure and unaffected by the interaction or presence of Negro slaves in their population. This
ideal most identifies with the Ethnic Hierarchy theory Fredrickson is responsible for. Fredrickson

Racial Separatism Research Paper

  • 1. Racial Separatism Research Paper Racial separatism is the belief, most of the time based on racism, that different races should remain segregated and apart from one another. Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that his or she predetermines a person's social and moral traits and born biological characteristics. The introduction of these terms produces racial discrimination within a society. Racial discrimination has been a thorn in the side of yesterdays, today's and future generations because of its adverse effect on critical areas of one's life such as healthcare, economics, wealth and social media. Racial discrimination whether indirect or direct is a part of life that is constantly being battled with on a daily basis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 17th century Africans were brought to America and were used as slaves. The slave owners used them to up keep their properties and land. The most horrific part is when the slaves did not comply with the owners they would get beaten, tortured, or hung. This was a tactic they would use to frighten the other slaves. All Africans that were in America were not slaves. The Africans that were free were unable to own property or vote due to the discriminatory laws that outlawed them from doing so. America has had a lengthy negative history in reference to racial relations. From slavery to Jim Crow, African American's have been subjected to both psychological and physical abuse. One of the reasons President Johnson signed into law, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was to abolish Jim Crow and advance the idea of equality. African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans are all subjects of discrimination in the U.S. From then forward there was a definite upheaval of emotions amongst everyone. Martin Luther King Jr. lost his life trying to better the lives of African–American people. He was one of the greatest American Civil Rights leaders of the 1960s. He was born in 1929 in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a minister at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. At fifteen Martin Luther King Jr. was enrolled at Morehouse College. He graduated from there in 1948, and, like his father wanted to become a minister. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Black Muslim time marked a period in which certain unique values and practices that were familiar only to the black people in the United States. They can be reference to certain specific values and principles which could not be found in other Muslims. According to Muhammad, the then leader of the black Muslims, the white man was the devil for malcolm. Malcolm pointed out that if the Africans were to achieve Black Nationalism, it would require them to have some land of their own. Malcolm X pointed out that there was no need for the Black Africans to remain complacent that they had a county of their own. He insisted that the United States was not their country and he himself, though legally an American could not in fact call himself one. He argued that all the white immigrants and refugees whenever they arrived into the United States of America became more of Americans at their point of arrival than they Negros who had acquired nationality of the country by birth. In his view, there would absolutely no reason for a national legislation to agree that a black American is indeed an American citizen. the road to Black Nationalism requires them to get some land of their own. Two alternatives present themselves in this regard: separating themselves from the rest of the American population and getting some portion of the country as their own or retreating back to Africa. In his view, it looked obvious that the county would not allow them to leave America as an entire race to Africa. The county would not allow them to pursue that option, but they could come together and occupy some part of the county where they would treat each other equally and justly. The land they acquire would be necessary for them to support their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Separatism The politics of Infinite Jest are rooted inside a rich speculative fiction backdrop, but have surprisingly managed to predict a climate similar to current political America. Soon after the events that created O.N.A.N. in the novel, Canadians began advocating for separatism. There are a variety of separatist groups, but the most ubiquitous are Les Assassins en Fauteuils Rollent. A metaphor for their political attitude, their members deliberately jump back and forth over train tracks while American trains plow forward. This game steals the legs of young men who have put themselves in harm's way, and disability is prided over cowardice. Marathe, an AFR member disabled by the Jeu de Train Prochain, gives a lengthy speech on the how the underlying evils of America are simultaneous utilitarianism and individualism. By connecting Marathe's limb loss by train and this speech, he becomes obviously connected to the Trolley Thought Experiment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This scenario is the most popularly used variation. Comparatively, the "footswitch" variation of the problem forces test subjects to choose between allowing a train to hit five people or pushing an uninvolved man onto the tracks to slow the train. A utilitarian would sacrifice one to save the five in both scenarios. Those who display utilitarian thought in the Trolley Thought Experiment tend to have decreased sense of responsibility, higher than average levels of testosterone, increased levels of anger, and low levels of serotonin (Duke). Surprisingly, it is most common in individuals with high cognitive ability and also prevalent in those suffering cognitive impairment from inebriation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Autopsy of Nuwaubianism, Black Nationalism, and the Epistemological Concepts Surrounding Separatist Theory Regina Farrell Professor Gregory Smithsimon May 17, 2017 Thesis The Black man has a long history of slavery, violence and general tension in the United States. Although there have been amendments to legislation to allow for some equality, there is still progress to be made. In the meantime, civil rights movements have given birth to organizations such as Nuwaubianism, that aim to keep the Black community together. Using ethnographic research, techniques such as field observations, interviews, and literary analysis I will conduct an autopsy of Black Nationalism relating to the epistemological concepts surrounding Black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The heavy symbolism on paraphernalia in the language of Nuwaup make it difficult for a non– member to attain the knowledge they seek without membership or reading every single publication. I recognized some of the esotericism and secrecy had been written in between the lines of the publications from structures of secret societies such a freemasonry and Orders of the Golden Dawn. Although I could not fully decipher the mission statement and main objectives of Nuwaubianism, I was able to get an idea of their sentiments toward race and the position of the Black man in society today. These revelations came in the form of an interview. The interview was non–traditional in the sense that I did very little of the talking. A member of the organization mistook me for a fellow member and began a conversation concerning their thoughts on their indoctrination. The conversation was fruitful in that it provided sentiments on the outside world wrapped in Nuwaubian dogma, uninhibited by the censorship normally provided to outsiders. According to the interview, a Black man 's capacity to flourish relies heavily on the amount of neuromelanin he possesses. Animism is the original religion of The Black man and paying homage to your ancestors takes the place of Christianity. The most surprising revelation was the attribution of the white man to ... A Classroom Environment Of Other Ethnic Groups As educators what pluralistic perspective do we use to motivate and encourage our students to learn in a classroom environment of other ethnic groups? Every teacher has a different teaching style. Identifying the best model of excellence in a pluralistic curriculum will increase good results in student achievement. Building Cultural Connections: Recognize Customs, Culture, and Religion Knowing and learning other cultural practices Knowing and understanding the differences and similarities of beliefs Barbara T. Bowman, Vice President of Academic Programs at the Erikson Institute in Chicago, Illinois, expresses the challenge in this manner. "One of the most serious and explosive issues in the United States today is how to meet the educational needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students? If current trends in educational achievement continue, millions of students (primarily poor, African American, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic) will not obtain the education necessary for full participation in the economic and civic life of the country. Furthermore, the inequality that results from differences in educational achievement of children is likely to make the social stability of the United States increasingly doubtful." How do all ethnic and racial groups in the United States relate to one another? Assimilation is a process in which formerly distinct and separate groups come to share a common culture and merge together socially. As a society undergoes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Alice Walker Strength Alice Walker is able to combine the African American Woman's struggle with lyrical poetry, which allows her to show her people's pain and suffering in a form that would appeal to a larger audience. Walker claimed her space as a writer despite the trying factors she has faced. The film, Alice Walker: beauty in truth, depicted her fight against these obstacles. The most striking points in the film for me was her strength, her will to fight separatism within the Civil Rights movement, and how her fight shares many similarities to modern day feminism. Growing up, Alice and her siblings lived on a plantation where the owner wanted them to spend their lives working on the plantation, but Alice's mother had different plans. She stood head to head with the owner and demanded her children receive an education at the local school. Her mother's strength allowed Alice to become the activist and writer we love today. Groups can be so focused on changing white racism, sexism, and oppression, that they are blind to the issues plaguing their own group. Even when her own culture attacked her, she found strength to keep writing. Meridan, another book by Walker, is considered the best novel of the Civil Rights movement for the women's perspective. This perspective is largely overlooked, even in today's culture. We talk of racial oppression and how that affects the race and family, but the women's perspective is often seen as distracting or disloyal to the cause. Our society's gender roles place women after the man. Society's pressure on men can breed hostility inside him. This domino effect falls onto the black women and children. Fredrickson and Buchanan are famous politicians. "Race in US" is one of popular topics of Fredrickson who used to serve as the "president of the Organization for American Historians and Stanford University" (Fredrickson 449). In my opinion, many people, especially foreigners, immigrants, etc also give their hope for the cultural pluralism which "is healthy and normal condition that does not preclude equal rights and the mutual understanding about civic responsibilities needed to sustain a democratic nation–state" (Fredrickson 455). While Fredrickson supports for a diversity society, Buchanan rejects it. His assessment seems to be obviously different, as he proclaims: "If we have no common faith and are divided by morality and cultures, and are separated by ethnicity and race, what holds us together? Especially in light of Putnam's report that 'diversity' dilutes 'social capital', erodes community, and engenders mutual mistrust." (Buchanan 472) Buchanan trembles for America. According to him, since we "open our borders in the last forty years to people of all creeds, cultures, countries, and civilizations" (Buchanan 466), we "threw away" the old and unique culture, religion, tradition, and history (Buchanan 468). Besides, Buchanan agrees with John Jay that American are no longer as "one united people, one connected country, brethren, of common blood" (Buchanan 467). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Malcolm's Identity In The Life Of Malcolm X Have you ever wonder, what were the three most important changes that Malcolm had during his life from the beginning to the end? During his life, Malcolm had many attitudes toward his identity as he changed his name from Malcolm Little to Malcolm X and finally El–Hajj Malik El–Shabazz. Throughout his experiences as a black human being, he experiences a significant transformation over the course of the autobiography. Malcolm life becomes a quest to resolve the race issues that have always surrounded him from his past to his present. When he was Malcolm Little, he can no longer tolerate being treated as a pet; therefore, Malcolm leaves to the big city to explore his black identity. As Detroit Red, he becomes a hustler in Boston and Harlem, but he eventually gives himself up after recognizing the emptiness mind of this fast lifestyle. In prison, Malcolm mature himself by Elijah Muhammad philosophy and emerges as Malcolm X to get people politically active by extending the Nation of Islam across the United States. • 17. Black Power Impact Black Power, the seemingly ubiquitous term that is ever–so–often referenced when one deals with the topic of Black equality in the United States. While progress, or at least the illusion of progress, has occurred over the past century, many of the issues that continue to plague the Black (as well as other minority) communities have yet to be truly addressed. Although African–American writers and politicians used the term "Black Power" for years, the expression first entered the lexicon of the Civil Rights Movement during the Meredith March Against Fear in the summer of 1966. On that day, Stokely Carmichael rallied a crowd in Greenwood, Mississippi, with the cry, "We want Black Power!" Thenceforth, controversy has shrouded the term, reflecting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each definition brings with it its own set of experiences, ideologies, and perceptions. Carmichael defined Black Power as a movement of black people who, furious with their circumstances, decided that they and they alone would determine the outcome of their lives. King had a similar definition of Black Power stating that "Power is not the white man's birthright; it will not be legislated for us and delivered in neat government packages. It is social force any group can utilize by accumulation its elements in a planned deliberate campaign to organized it under its own control." King simply thought that Black Power as a slogan was too forceful and created a negative connotation. Peniel E. Joseph defined Black Power as a constructive force, advancing the cause of black people everywhere. It is clear that everyone has a different way of defining Black Power from Malcolm X and The Nation of Islam to Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party for Self–Defense to Stokely Carmichael and SNCC, each definition is different. At this point in American history, it is time for the downtrodden people of this nation to decide how to move forward in accomplishing their goals. Whether or not this movement mirrors the Civil Rights or Black Power will be a pertinent choice. Remembering the negative repercussions of Black Power, Americans must weight their options before the fight for change. The only thing that is clear is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Relationship Between Intentionality And Phenomenal... In order to answer this question thoroughly we must define the key terms in the title, intentionality and phenomenal character. Intentionality is defined by two separate terms, intentional object and intentional content. The directedness of our thoughts towards a specific object or state of affairs is what explains the intentional object. Intentional content refers to aspectual shape, the fact that if we think of something we must think of it in a certain way. Therefore intentionality and an intentional state as a whole is the specific way we think of the 'thing' our thoughts are directed to – a belief. Phenomenal character is simply the 'what its likeness' to be in that state. There is no actual explanation of phenomenal character, only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rooted in Descartes, he stated that "there can be nothing in the mind ... of which it is not aware, this seems to me to be self–evident." The main argument put forward by subsequent inseparatists follows on from this view. They advocate for a mind to be a mind it has to be conscious. Then deriving that consciousness has a phenomenology and therefore all conscious states, thus all intentional states, have phenomenology. "A state cannot be conscious without being phenomenal." Strawson gives the example of cognitive phenomenology, whereby there is something it is like experientially to understand a proposition. As evidence of this he creates a scenario where a woman is talking to someone, another person then comes in with a piece of paper filled with black and white marks. Consequently the woman faints, but what was it about the character of her experience that made her faint? There could be many explanations of why the woman fainted after seeing a telegram. However, then main conclusion Strawson draws from this is that in order for mental states to have content, the belief must be had by a being with phenomenal states. "For a mental state to have content it must consist of phenomenal properties." Primitive animals undoubtedly experience intentionality. When they are hungry, their thoughts are directed towards what they want to eat. However, it is questionable, even unlikely, that primitive animals experience any phenomenal character. If what ... • 21. No Cis Men Separatism Essay No–Cis–Men Separatism What does it mean when we make spaces for everybody but cis men? Let's talk about gender separatism. Whether or not we use longer descriptions aimed at framing the message in positive terms: "This is a space for cis women and transgender people" or "All lesbians, transpeople, bi– and heterosexual women are welcome" the intent is to create spaces where everybody but cis men can feel welcome. There was a time when I loved this idea and these spaces. Cis men take up way too much space in the world. It's a damn relief to know I'm going to a space where I will not have to deal with that particular type of bullshit. I'd hate to see this type of separatism disappear altogether. Still, this approach certainly doesn't preclude other varieties of bullshit – and that's the stuff I'd like to interrogate. Increasingly, I have come to view 'no cis men' separatism as the following: spaces for anyone assigned female at birth and extremely self–assured and/or well–(queer)networked trans feminine people. Who actually comes to spaces with this type of separatist policy? Who is technically included and not showing up? There are many queer communities in Copenhagen. I'm talking about the one that populates Queer Festival and Queer Sauna... *** This one is extremely dominated by cis women and trans–masculine people. • 23. Malcolm X Essay examples Throughout history there have been many people who have stood out and made an impact in the way we think and comprehend things. During the late 1950's and early 1960's, Malcolm X was no exception. His militant views that Western nations were inherently racist and that black people must join together to build their own society and value system had an important influence on black nationalist and black separatist movements of the 1950s and 1960s. At the beginning of the movie, Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little. He was a young child trying to adapt to society's changes. He was looking so hard that he fell into the wrong crowd. Malcolm didn't want to listen to him at first, but Baines's cool style helped Malcolm realize that Islam is for him and that the white man is the devil. While in prison, Malcolm read widely and developed an interest in the Nation of Islam, a Black Nationalist religious movement whose members were known as Black Muslims. Malcolm studied the teachings of the leader of the Black Muslims, Elijah Muhammad, who advocated an independent black state. The Nation of Islam was based on a theology adapted from several models: traditional Islamic teachings principles of Black Nationalism, and economic self– help programs that addressed the needs of African Americans living in urban ghettoes. Unlike traditional Islam, which rejects all forms of racism, the Nation of Islam declared that whites were the "devil by nature," and that God was black. However, the Black Muslims predicted that in the near future a Great War would take place in which whites would be destroyed and black people would rule the world through the benevolence of Allah, their creator. To prepare for this new order, the Nation of Islam stressed personal self–restraint, opposed the use of drugs and alcohol, and organized economic self–help enterprises that eventually included farms, food stores, restaurants, and small businesses. • 25. The Benefition Of Education : Discriminated Education Discriminated Education How are you capable of becoming intelligent when your education is restrained? If you want to learn bad enough, you will always find a way. Striving for excellence should be everyone's goal, your heart is the only limit on what you can do in your life. Not race, nor color, can restrain you from achieving your life goals. Equality is something that we as humans will never reach. From education to the political system, there will always be discrimination against people's decisions. Take Frederick Douglas for example. He was enslaved to a white family in Maryland 1818. The mother of the household, Mrs. Hugh's, started off nice, teaching him how to read and write. Mrs. Hugh's later became cruel like all other slave owners, treating him as if he were a brute. Frederick Douglas, knew he needed to find another way to learn, so he tricked white boys into giving him learning tools by trading them food. Had Douglas not had the will to learn, he would have never became the educated man he was. Malcolm X, Convicted of robbery at the age of 21, "later emerged a spokesman for "black separatism" a philosophy telling blacks to cut all political, social, and economic ties". – Malcolm. It wasn't easy for him to get to this point in his life. • 27. The Education Of Malcolm X Essay Literacy is power. Being taught to read and write is important to function in society. You learn to read and write to express your feelings and communicate with others. Frederick Douglass and Malcom X both succeeded in learning how to read and write, but in different ways. The education of Malcolm X was learned more formally. Frederick Douglass learned from his surroundings and the people around him. Malcom and Frederick battled in reading and writing, but learned in similar and different ways. During the 1960s, Malcolm X was one of many articulate and powerful leaders of black America. Before he was a street hustler and spent seven years in prison, where he educated himself. Before this time, he was almost completely illiterate. He describes how he could hardly compose a sentence with a straight line or correctly articulates words, let alone read and write. Not being able to express his thoughts and feelings in the letters he wrote inspired him to educate himself. Malcolm then became one of the leading spokesman for African American separatism. Unlike Malcom X Frederick Douglass escaped to New York, where he became a leader in the abolitionist movement. Frederick was born a slave and couldn't read or write at all. His mistress was teaching him how to read and write but suddenly was against instructing him so he had to be strategically deceptive to learn. If current trends in educational achievement continue, millions of students (primarily poor, African American, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic) will not obtain the education necessary for full participation in the economic and civic life of the country. From the beginning Quebec has been set apart from the rest of Canada, and if Quebec were to separate, it would not be as devastating as some claim it would be. There would still be existing trade between Canada and Quebec, and Quebec would gain many economic advantages it currently does not have (106). Quebec separating would also mean taking their share of the debt with them, about ¼ of the debt, leaving Canada with significantly less (global–economics). JP 3–34 defines it as the organized use of subversion and violence by a group or movement that seeks to overthrow or force change of a governing authority. FM 3–24.2 defines it as a protracted politico–military struggle designed to weaken government control and legitimacy while increasing insurgent control. I have problems with both definitions. However, I disagree more with the joint publication. This paper will explain why. I actually agree with the dictionary definition. According to Webster's, an insurgency is an organized rebellion aimed at overthrowing a constituted government through the use of subversion and armed conflict. The joint publication expands the definition by inserting the phrase "or force change of". To me there are distinctions between insurgency, terrorism, and separatism. On the surface they seem minor. However, upon further analysis, this seemingly innocuous addition actually blurs those distinctions. The word overthrow is clear. Malcolm had many life experiences before tragically being shot and killed. Malcolm Little lived a very interesting life to become the man he will be remembered as. Right before Malcolm was born members of the KKK came to their little home in Omaha, Nebraska terrorizing his mother. But they were not just there to terrorize her because she was black it was because of who his father was. His father, Earl Little, would eventually be killed not by the clan but an equivalent group. Earl was killed because he was a preacher of Marcus Garvey's movement of being disconnected from the white man and they thought he was causing a disturbance for the "good black people. The sad part is that no ever was convicted or even brought in for questioning because they put his body on a street car track and the police just believed it was all an accident. The first of these rights given to the citizens of America is the right to freedom of religion and freedom of the press. Countless court cases have brought the issue of the separation of church and state to light. Legal battles and administrative actions in the government have led to conversations about how much religion should be involved in schools and what power the state has over religion. The phrase, "separation of church and state" is not found in the U.S. Constitution. On January 1, 1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter titled "Jefferson's Letter to the Danbury Baptists." This letter was written in response to a letter sent by the Danbury Baptists nearly three months before. The Danbury Baptist expressed their sentiments at Jefferson's election and their concerns about the relationship between religion and the state. In the correspondence, Jefferson discussed the importance of the state being unable to control the religion of the people: "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State" (Jefferson). • 45. Quebec Separatism : An Analysis Of Challenging Quebec... Challenging Quebec Separatism The relationship between anglophones and francophones in Canada has historically "remained difficult" (Smith, Ben), dating back to the British colonial leaders and the rulers of French Canada of 1763 (Behiels, M.D.). The shaky relations between the predominantly French–speaking Quebec province (Corbeil, Jean–Pierre) and the rest of Canada allowed for the movement of the 1980 and 1995 referendums regarding Quebec's independence. Despite Quebec's dual attempt at sovereignty, the notion of Quebec separatism is one that should be vehemently rebutted. When examining this controversial topic, it is clear that Quebec sovereignty must be denied based on three cornerstones: the flawed reasoning behind the movement, the negative repercussions that would occur if such a change were to be implemented and the analysis of the Quebec and Canadian demographic regarding the issue. The Quebec question of independence should be refused as the logic behind the province's pursuit of sovereignty is somewhat questionable. One of Quebec's foremost justifications for its sovereign aspirations is the "defense of the French language and Quebec culture" (Why Quebec). Quebec believes that, although Canada is officially bilingual, the position of the French language is extremely unstable. Therefore, Quebec seeks to secede from Canada, so that its own government could have unilateral power over cultural and lingual matters within the province (Why Quebec) in order to ... • 47. American Government Policies Promoting Separatism? Ideally, governmental policies aim to defend citizens of a specific territory by setting laws that promote and implement egalitarianism. Although the federal government of the United States is said to strive to construct a homogeneous nation when it comes to equal rights and opportunities for its citizens in different states and cities, there have been numerous historical occurrences that demonstrate opposing aims. Often times in American history, unselected natural characteristics such as race and ethnicity have served as keen factors permitting unequal treatment of individuals and at creating barriers placing minority groups at a disadvantage when attempting to practice influence over the government. "Race has been a long–standing and stubborn dividing line in local, state, and national politics in the United States" (Rogers 6). Because of such instances, today, many political representatives attempt to practice descriptive representation which promotes racial unity. While this is an enormous step, indicative of progression, corrupt politicians many times can use such incentives to implement manipulative and unscrupulous tactics to gain support from minority groups. In addition, the attempts to form race–based alliances have had very little success amongst minority groups as racial similarities are not significant enough to unify different minority groups. Thirdly, control over defence and foreign policy means Scotland can choose, for example, to no longer have nuclear weapons in its seas or no longer be part of NATO. • 51. The Opposition Of Quebec Separatism In recent elections, the separatist parties in Quebec have seen crushing defeats, raising questions about their relevance in modern day Canada. Support for Quebec separatism has diminished in the past several decades, with the rise of the NDP in the 2011 federal election and the more recent provincial Liberal victory in April of 2014. In the 2011 federal election, specifically, the Bloc Quebecois was reduced to only four seats in the House of Commons, while the NDP took the majority of Quebec's seats. The provincial Parti Quebecois (PQ) has also been faltering, losing more often than not to the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ). Indeed, over the past decade, the PLQ has only lost one election, and has held majorities in many. The most recent election put them back into power after a short PQ minority government that began in 2012. These recent elections may point to a future in which the separatist movement in Quebec may be silenced. Since the late 1950s, the question of Quebec separatism has existed, with levels of support varying throughout the following decades, leading up the referendums of 1980 and 1995. The defeats suffered by the separatist parties in recent elections demonstrate that the separatist movement may be close to being over in Quebec. In a photograph of a 1967 Vietnam War protest in New York, a large crowd was pictured standing united as one despite the differences of the people themselves (Source B). This is an example of pathos, because their unity emphasizes that the war was a human issue rather than one pertaining to a certain segment of society, or even of nationality. The diversity of the protesters also reflects an unfortunate layer of irony to the government's decision to join the Vietnam War, as most Americans arrived in the country because of immigration, yet America's interjection into the war and subsequent use of the chemical Agent Orange caused the displacement of many Vietnamese civilians. Another feature of note in the image is a young boy, holding a sign declaring that "children [were] not born to burn" in large black letters (Source B). The correlation between the speaker and the message is an unmistakable example of pathos, meant to evoke guilt in the government officials who had chosen to go to war and those watching from their television sets at home. Indeed, in what was later found to be a war crime, the napalm strikes and use of chemical agents like Agent Orange gravely injured hundreds of thousands of innocent Vietnamese civilians, yet those who dared to protest it were seen as favoring Communism and were often subject to mass arrest as a form of censorship. Just as the Vietnam War protesters spoke out about the injustices they saw in their society, it is imperative that American citizens retain their freedom of speech so that public censorship does not occur when addressing future issues; however, arrests and violence against protesters is still common, indicating that interference with freedom of speech is still a problem ... • 55. Assimilation Of The United States Constitution Essay America has the United States Constitution as its map of operation. This Constitution's Preamble states that "...in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, and insure domestic tranquility...promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our prosperity..." If this statement is true, there would be no need to research whether assimilation or separatism would be ideal for minorities to enjoy domestic tranquility and/ or liberty. As a minority, we would not have to think about what we lose or gain if we choose assimilation or separatism. In order for assimilation to occur a minority group becomes an integrated part of the majority group; this assimilation results in non–distinguishing of one group from another by cultural characteristics. In order for this process to be complete, it must entail, not only an active effort by the minority group to shed all distinguishing actions and beliefs, and also complete unqualified acceptance of that individual by the dominant society. Implementation of this process will gradually integrate the minority into the system, causing all groups to be culturally similar with their differences no longer a basis for prejudice from the dominant group. (Dubois, Miley 172) The rationale for assimilation from the structural sociologist's point of view is that assimilation is the best way to reduce cultural differences between the dominant group and the majority group. • 71. Nazi Germany In Modern China The most alarming similarity between Modern China and Nazi Germany appears in their overtly racist government policies towards their minorities, most notably Jews, in the case of Nazi Germany. Throughout history, Europeans have reviled the Jewish people. Wherever they went, the Jews encountered a long history of hatred and persecution directed towards (Wyman and Rosenzveig 391). That vilifying tradition, along with the generally accepted theories of racial conflict and Social Darwinism, allowed early twentieth century Germany to foster its anti–semitism to such an extreme (Owen and Wheatcroft 301–302). These racial doctrines and prejudices were often expressed by the many parties of the German nation, but rarely acted upon; it took the terrifying literalism of Adolf Hitler and ... Joseph Goebbels, Reich Minister of Nazi Propaganda and writer of the weekly newspaper "Das Reich", in an article titled "The Jews are Guilty!", infamously declared: "The Jews are our destruction. • 75. Paralleled Ideals between Fredrickson and Jefferson... Social Contract is a theory that has been studied by many in an attempt to decide if it is modifiable or unchanging. In Thomas Jefferson's letters to Virginia, he reveals his feelings on the issues of slavery and the assimilation of Negros into the colonial population. Some of these ideas and beliefs paralleled in concepts when compared to the theories coined by Fredrickson: Group Separatism, Ethnic Hierarchy, Cultural Pluralism, and One Way Assimilation. His vocabulary and the ability to express himself, especially through his letters to Mr. Elijah Muhammad, were lacking, as he desired the ability to express himself in an educated manner as opposed to using familiar street slang, which he was accustomed to using. He saw educated prisoners achieve a certain celebrity status and desired these skills as well as status. Malcolm X describes these inmates and the status they possessed: "There were a sizeable number of well–read inmates, especially the popular debaters. Some were said by many to be walking encyclopedias. They were almost celebrities" (212). He envied these educated men and became determined to grow to be educated. In pursuing his self–taught education, "Malcolm X emerged as the leading spokesman for black separatism, a philosophy that urged black Americans to cut political, social, and economic ties with the white community" (intro 210). Not seeking the prestige or degree for his education, his efforts made him a leading advocate for the civil rights and liberties of African Americans and a leading spokesperson for the Nation of Islam.
