Rabies is an infectious viral disease transmitted through animal bites that was first described over 4000 years ago. Symptoms of rabies include headache, fever, confusion, spasms when exposed to water, and ultimately coma and death. In 1885, Louis Pasteur created the first rabies vaccine using spinal cords from rabid rabbits. Today, pre-exposure vaccination and prompt medical care after exposure can prevent rabies. However, an outbreak in Angola killed 93 children due to a shortage of vaccines.
