1. The Internet:
Because the recession is a current topic there were many sources of information available for us to use.
We used the internet to get access to websites and newspaper articles based on the recession all of which
gave us an in-depth knowledge and understanding of our topic.
Through the use of the internet we discovered a website entitled: What Is a Recession: CNBC Explains’
–http://www.cnbc.com/id/43563081/What_Is_a_Recession_CNBC_Explains This website
was extremely beneficial to us as it explained in simple terms what the recession is and the outcome it has
on society. Moreover, it also gave us facts and figures which we would later use in our documentary.
Plus, it gave us the causes of the recession and how it started which we incorporated in our documentary
which aided in creating more realism and professionalism about our documentary.
Another website we used was ‘This Is Money.co.uk’ which had an article revolving the recession
entitled ‘Economy watch: What caused the return to recession and how long will it last?’ -
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-1616085/Economy-watch-How-long-Britains-
recession-last.html
This was a useful website as it gave visual illustration on the recession we made it easier to understand.
Moreover, the illustrations also allowed us to understand how Britain has suffered due to the recession
and the impact it has had for people over the last few years. This information was extremely useful as we
could incorporate this in our documentary to highlight how peoples lives had been permanently damaged
due to the recession.
2. Moreover, an additional website we encountered through the use of the internet researching the
recession was - http://www.guardian.co.uk/ The guardian newspaper website. When researching
the recession we discovered a guardian newspaper article entitled - Recession will lead to 'lost
generation' of young people - http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/jan/04/princes-trust-survey-
unemployment-young-people This article was very useful as it highlighted the rising figures in
youth unemployment as well as emphasizing the young people affected by the current recession are
less enthusiastic to seek higher education. The main aim of this article was to explore how young
people has ‘lost out’ due to the recession which is exactly what we aim to convey in our
documentary. In addition, the article also and stressed that due to the recession and higher education
no longer being option that young people have had to chose other alternatives such as
apprenticeship, the article also pointed out the ‘Princes Trust’ as another alternative young people
have sought.
Another website we discovered during our research into the recession through the use of the
internet was a BBC News article entitled - ‘Eurozone back in recession’ -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-20340909 This article was incredibly useful as it uses
facts and statics to demonstrate the on going affects of the recession which we could highlight in
our documentary. Furthermore, this website highlights that the recession is a topic affecting all
3. PDF Files:
In addition, through the use of the internet we discovered several PDF/Adobe Acrobat files by
published authors revolving the recession. The first PDF file were discovered was entitled –
Youth unemployment and the recession . This PDF file was extremely useful in not only
explaining what the recession is but more importantly the implications it has had on our target
audience revolving around a major sub topics that we will incorporate in our documentary
which is young unemployment. The PDF file gave us several illustrations through graphs which
made it easier for us to understand the magnitude of youth unemployment.
Another PDF file were came across during our research was - Youth volunteering in a
recession Talking with young people
http://nya.org.uk/dynamic_files/research/Vol%20in%20a%20Recession%20YP%20low%20res.
pdf
This PDF was very beneficial to use as it gave us important on how the recession has affected
young people however, unlike the other websites, articles and other PDF files we read this was
different as it had the opinions from young people themselves. This gave us further information
of young peoples views of the recession and also lead us to have a greater understanding of our
target audience.
