Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

1. What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing this product?
2. Photoshop
I have used Photoshop to create my front cover. I have learnt how
to use the blending options tool in which I have used on my front
cover to emphasise the mast head as I have put a drop-shadow
behind and have coloured it red which is a vibrant colour. I have
also used the blending options tool to add a stroke effect to my
cover lines which makes it stand out more on the page and add a
professional effect.
3. I have also used the shape tool on
photoshop to create the shape
behind my main cover line, I drew
a rectangular box and then cut
into the sides in an arrow shape to
create the box that I used.
Also I have used the text tool to add the
content to my front cover and then used the
specific tools such as to make the text bigger,
change the font, increase and decrease the line
spacing and the space between the letters and
the words.
I have used the dodge and
burn tool to edit my cover
stars face and hair. I have
used the dodge tool to
brighten areas of her face
and the burn tool to darken
areas.
4. Quark
I used the text tool to input my text content onto my
double page spread and contents page. I used the box
tool to add the black boxes behind the heading
feature, regular content, win, gig guide and posters.
This emphasised the headings on the page so that
they stood out more than the other text on the page,
this makes it easier for the reader to find what they
want.
I have used Quark to create my contents page and double page spread. The main tool that I
used on quark was the text tool, box tool and photo box to import a photograph. I also added
columns to my page so that all the text was an even spacing apart and so that all of my
contents fit neatly on the page.
5. Cannon DSLR
I used a Cannon DSLR camera to take my photographs for my front
cover, contents page and double page spread. I have learnt how to used
the zoom on the camera to zoom in and out of my shots which produced a
variety of shots for me to choose from. I also learnt how to use the auto-
focus which helped me take clear professional photographs.
6. Blogger, Prezi and slideshare
Throughout my coursework I have used various online resources which are Blogger, Prezi,
Dafont and slideshare. I have used Blogger to document my coursework and to compile it
all in one place to be moderated when it is finished. My preliminary work has also been
uploaded to my blog and I can now compare this to my media magazine work to see what
I have improved on. I have used Prezi to create an professional looking online power point
to create my double spread analysis. I used Dafont to download fonts onto Photoshop and
Quark in which I then used in creating my front cover, contents page and double page
spread. To upload my power point to blogger I used Slideshare to retrieve the embed code,
I then imputed it into the html of my post on Blogger.
