Question 5
How Did You Attract &
Address Your Audience?
When producing my magazine, I chose a
similar approach to that of Q & MOJO
Magazines as they both had a similar target
audience to my Publication. I also favoured
their mode of address as they are both light,
informal and witty whilst remaining highly
topical and informative. As a member of Q’s
target audience, I like how their language and
form creates a “cool” image of the music
industry. It also creates a trendy environment
to enjoy music in and addresses me as though
my opinion is equal to that of the journalists.
FRONT COVER
As a magazine cover, I feel my creation uses
an array of colour, images and the star
power of prestigious featured artists to
distinguish itself from it’s competitors and
therefore attract readers to purchasing my
publication. It is highly important that any
magazine stands out from other rival names
“off the shelf”, if it wishes to become
successful.
Beginning with colour, I used an industry
favourite red, to allow a reader to relate to
the magazine as it does with other titles
such as NME and Q, immediately gaining the
attention and trust of the potential reader. I
differentiated from red with yellow to
highlight special stories and features.
FRONT COVER #2
I elongated the text of the Pull Quote
beneath the Splash to attract the
audiences gaze. This means it has now
gained a readers interest in answering the
question in the Pull Quote. I used a Pug
displaying a lucrative competition to
entice a reader to buy the magazine for a
chance to win. Finally I played on the
fashion sense of my target audience by
placing emphasis on the blazers the
models wear in the main image. This
provokes a potential reader to critique the
fashion sense of the band displayed,
thereby gaining their attention. This focus
on clothing is used through out my pages.
DOUBLE PAGE CONTENTS
A Contents Page must sell the
magazine to a reader, as it is the first
pages they would see upon opening
the publication. I have made my
Contents Page do so by displaying a
range of singles artists and bands,
old and new, to appeal to the
interests of a wide range of my
target audience, therefore attracting
a larger readership than it’s closest
competitors. I doubled my Contents
Pages from one to two pages in
order to attract readers with a wider
range of reading materials.

I have also appealed to the fashion sense of my
audience by placing heavy emphasis on the
clothes worn by the models used in the images. A
range from “Rock Chick”, Indie & Hippy styles are
seen in the subsidiary images on my Contents
Pages which represents the fashion of my target
audience, allowing them to identify with the
publication. I discovered from audience research
that my target audience enjoys live music. For this
reason, a large feature on popular festivals is
displayed, attracting audiences to read on to find
the preview. Finally numerous opportunities are
provided for readers to contact the magazine with
opinions on music. This makes the reader feel
their opinion is valued, and therefore attracts
them to become a frequent buyer of the
magazine to engage in debates and possibly see
themselves published.
DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE
The mode of address of the double
page article is a prime example of my
magazine attracts audience
members. A number of expletives
such as “…a whole world of shit” are
used to mimic the speech pattern of
the reader, adding to their comfort
when reading. This is carried on with
a use of a slang and colloquialisms
such as “cosy Soho caff” to add a
familiarity to the article. The band
featured are slightly older but still
similar in age to my target audience.
This means they can both look up to
the band whilst also relating to them.
DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE #2
The banners “EXCLUSIVE” give the reader the
impression they won’t see this interview or read this
content elsewhere. This adds an urgency for them to
buy the magazine in order to read on. The bold
Headline “HELP!” has an immediate ipat on the reader
as it wets their appetite to read on through the article.
The punchy opening paragraph beneath has a similar
effect. The same focus on fashion that appears in the
other pages, is carried on through to the article, with
individual close us of the band used to emphasise
their clothing. This also symbolises the individuality of
my target audience, allowing them to feel represented
by the magzine. The banner “MELODY Interview: The
Day Trippers” creates the impression that this high
profile interview is a part of a collectable range, not
merely a one off. Therefore this attracts the reader to
become a subscriber in order not to miss another
prestigious interview.

  • 1. Question 5 How Did You Attract & Address Your Audience?
  • 2. When producing my magazine, I chose a similar approach to that of Q & MOJO Magazines as they both had a similar target audience to my Publication. I also favoured their mode of address as they are both light, informal and witty whilst remaining highly topical and informative. As a member of Q’s target audience, I like how their language and form creates a “cool” image of the music industry. It also creates a trendy environment to enjoy music in and addresses me as though my opinion is equal to that of the journalists.
  • 3. FRONT COVER As a magazine cover, I feel my creation uses an array of colour, images and the star power of prestigious featured artists to distinguish itself from it’s competitors and therefore attract readers to purchasing my publication. It is highly important that any magazine stands out from other rival names “off the shelf”, if it wishes to become successful. Beginning with colour, I used an industry favourite red, to allow a reader to relate to the magazine as it does with other titles such as NME and Q, immediately gaining the attention and trust of the potential reader. I differentiated from red with yellow to highlight special stories and features.
  • 4. FRONT COVER #2 I elongated the text of the Pull Quote beneath the Splash to attract the audiences gaze. This means it has now gained a readers interest in answering the question in the Pull Quote. I used a Pug displaying a lucrative competition to entice a reader to buy the magazine for a chance to win. Finally I played on the fashion sense of my target audience by placing emphasis on the blazers the models wear in the main image. This provokes a potential reader to critique the fashion sense of the band displayed, thereby gaining their attention. This focus on clothing is used through out my pages.
  • 5. DOUBLE PAGE CONTENTS A Contents Page must sell the magazine to a reader, as it is the first pages they would see upon opening the publication. I have made my Contents Page do so by displaying a range of singles artists and bands, old and new, to appeal to the interests of a wide range of my target audience, therefore attracting a larger readership than it’s closest competitors. I doubled my Contents Pages from one to two pages in order to attract readers with a wider range of reading materials.
  • 6. DOUBLE PAGE CONTENTS #2 I have also appealed to the fashion sense of my audience by placing heavy emphasis on the clothes worn by the models used in the images. A range from “Rock Chick”, Indie & Hippy styles are seen in the subsidiary images on my Contents Pages which represents the fashion of my target audience, allowing them to identify with the publication. I discovered from audience research that my target audience enjoys live music. For this reason, a large feature on popular festivals is displayed, attracting audiences to read on to find the preview. Finally numerous opportunities are provided for readers to contact the magazine with opinions on music. This makes the reader feel their opinion is valued, and therefore attracts them to become a frequent buyer of the magazine to engage in debates and possibly see themselves published.
  • 7. DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE The mode of address of the double page article is a prime example of my magazine attracts audience members. A number of expletives such as “…a whole world of shit” are used to mimic the speech pattern of the reader, adding to their comfort when reading. This is carried on with a use of a slang and colloquialisms such as “cosy Soho caff” to add a familiarity to the article. The band featured are slightly older but still similar in age to my target audience. This means they can both look up to the band whilst also relating to them.
  • 8. DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE #2 The banners “EXCLUSIVE” give the reader the impression they won’t see this interview or read this content elsewhere. This adds an urgency for them to buy the magazine in order to read on. The bold Headline “HELP!” has an immediate ipat on the reader as it wets their appetite to read on through the article. The punchy opening paragraph beneath has a similar effect. The same focus on fashion that appears in the other pages, is carried on through to the article, with individual close us of the band used to emphasise their clothing. This also symbolises the individuality of my target audience, allowing them to feel represented by the magzine. The banner “MELODY Interview: The Day Trippers” creates the impression that this high profile interview is a part of a collectable range, not merely a one off. Therefore this attracts the reader to become a subscriber in order not to miss another prestigious interview.
