2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
How to Create Map Views in the Odoo 17 ERPCeline George
The map views are useful for providing a geographical representation of data. They allow users to visualize and analyze the data in a more intuitive manner.
How to Make a Field invisible in Odoo 17Celine George
It is possible to hide or invisible some fields in odoo. Commonly using “invisible” attribute in the field definition to invisible the fields. This slide will show how to make a field invisible in odoo 17.
The use of technology in the research, construction and planning stages.
1. • Enabled our group to present the ideas we had scribbled
down/drawn/typed in a neat & cohesive way.
• Planning: Able to post photos of the A3 papers we had used to plan,
upload product research through embedding slideshare links,
prezis and making normal blog posts was like keeping a diary.
• Enabled the collation of product and audience research
• Research: Posted links for YouTube videos and were generally able
to access the blog easily on the nearest computer.
2. • The new version of iMovie had a confusing new layout that we struggled with initially;
we considered using the old iMovie for familiarity.
• However we understood how to use it successfully
and explored different/new tools throughout the process.
I.e. the colour correction we used to show a contrast between
The actual film and Seonaid’s ‘behind the scenes’ shots.
• As we learned from last year, the non-linear editing software
enabled us to film in the order that suited our cast, us and the conditions we
needed to film. Therefore we didn't have to film in order of our sequence.
•
• iMovie enabled us to download our sounds straight into the iTunes library on the
macs and comparing what worked best by experimentation.
•
• We did have a problem with merging the titles/credits made through After Effects into
the trailer as they were incompatible due to the new version of After Effects…
However we quickly overcame the problem, rendered and exported them onto
iMovie.
iMovie
Construction…
3. • With experience from GCSE and AS Media, we
knew how to use Photoshop confidently to
begin with, making a less time consuming
process.
• The Layers allowed us to
really manipulate
images, text, and their
movement effectively.
• Helped create the unique
brushstroke type
background.
• Hiding layers to see what cover
lines/images worked best
was a flexible and unique
tool in aiding our creativity
and experimenting without
the need to ‘edit>undo’
each time.
• We had issues with not being able to
save our work and having to
screenshot our poster/cover and
make the changes at a later time.
Making the process stressful and
longer
Construction…
4. • Free and easy way of communicating outside of class.
• Sharing photos, links, ideas as well as schedules and
reminders of filming or smaller deadlines/goals we
had personally set for our group.
Throughout research, planning and construction the
communication between group members was ensured by
the extensive use of this app.
5. Construction, research
and planning
• Able to research a variety of
similar products with the
‘related videos’ section
when trying to find
trailers for product
research
PRE-PRODUCTION
• Uploading our rough cut
and final trailer was
made easy using
YouTube as we just
had to embed the link
into a blog post.
POST-PRODUCTION
• Links were shared via
blogger, WhatsApp,
Facebook and allowed us
to share/explain our
ideas immediately when
finding inspiration i.e. the
fluid shot that became a
jump cut montage.
• Other students work
was easily
accessible allowing
comparisons to
other groups.
6. • Used in creating the production
and distribution company
logos making them appear a
more visually engaging
animation rather than the
generic titles on iMovie.
• Used a title on iMovie for
the slates as we felt they
fit our aesthetic and
general theme of our film
perfectly
• Found that After Effects had
the same selection of
fonts as iMovie allowing
us to use the same Gothic
Font for the titles and
slates – appearing
cohesive and seamless.
• Problem: Different fonts
used for the titles and
slates matching up.
Losing cohesion within
the trailer.
• Were initially unable to
transfer the logos and
credits onto iMovie as
the different versions
were incompatible
which was a problem in
using this software
during the construction
7. Microphone:
• Enabled us to record clear
and high quality
sounds during filming
of the trailer and
create effective sound
bridges.
Tripod:
• Allowed our shots to be
framed accurately and
provide a still shot. Also
enabled us to create the
tracking shot of the <
characters working
Tracks:
• We were able to film a fluid tracking
shot seamlessly and quickly.
Camera:
• During construction
of the trailer we
were able to use
the spirit level to
ensure straight
framing as well as
a clear high
quality shot
• Experimenting with the speed at which we were going to push
the tripod and how much pressure to apply enabled us to
quickly find the best way to film.
