Question four:
How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
Demographics
My magazine represents the upcoming
generation, youths aspiring to become artists
and or involved in fashion, people who just
like to keep up with the lives of the rich and
famous. The audience will be able to relate to
the artists that are in the magazine, and be
inspired by the stories told. When considering
ethnicity, the magazine will be aimed
primarily at black youths, though I expect
other people who are interested in this genre
of music to be interested also.
Ethnicity
I have taken this into consideration
whilst designing the magazine, you can
see this by looking at the ratio of black
and other races. The ‘FRESHERS’
magazine is made up of mostly black
youths with the exception of one
southern Asian model. It is aimed at the
younger generation as it would
include the most recent fashion trends
and young celebrities that are currently
popular.
Age
The majority of the market will
be 18-24 year olds, however, a small
percentage of approximately 15%
will be 35+. The connotations in my
magazine suggest the audience is of
a younger generation, as it discusses
issues you will hear amongst youths.
I discovered, for example that the
most talked about subject
between young people is celebrities,
therefore, the magazine includes
celebrity gossip.
Pricing
The younger audience will be mostly
be made of students and social groups
who share the common interest in RnB
and Urban fashion. 'FRESHERS' will
be targeted at those who are prepared
to spend £4 on a 50 page magazine, it
is affordable to all members of the
target audience. Another reason why I
have chosen this demographic as my
target is due to the dark, Urban feel
the magazine has, the magazine has a
chilled, rich look and this will be
appealing to the audience, and
contribute to the more prestigious
take on an Urban magazine.
Shana
Shana is 18. She enjoys listening to
Hip hop and RnB
Her and her friends enjoy watching
the popular TV shows ‘E news’
‘KISS’ and ‘MTV’ so that she can
knows what the likes of Beyoncé,
Jay-Z and Monica get up to
Shana is a student and would
happily pay £4:00 so that she will
be able to delve even deeper into
their lives.
