2. The media product which I have produced is aimed at a mainstream audience
because it confirms dominant ideology. Mainstream magazines that deal with
dominant ideology like my magazine are often published and distributed by
massive media conglomerates, which branch out into national and international
distribution networks. The four main distributors for the magazine industry are
Marketforce, Comag, Frontline and Seymour (owned by Frontline).
If my magazine were to make it into the market, I would want it to be sold to the
public in shops such as supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda) because it will be
on sale where a large amount of the general public regularly go, therefore
attracting a larger range of audience. Also as my magazine confirms the dominant
ideology of mainstream taste of music and fashion, supermarkets should be willing
to put it on sale. Also I would want to consider outlets such as HMV, because it is a
place where my target audience will be while looking to purchase another type of
media with the same interests as my magazine and therefore be quite likely to
purchase my product.
3. With that in mind, after research I have decided that the distributor
that would be the most appropriate is: FRONTLINE
• Formed in June 1986 by Emap (now Bauer Media)
• Frontline distributes over 160 magazine titles, 58 of which are in the top 200 best selling magazines in the UK.
• In 2010 – Sold 480 Million magazine copies to over 55,000 retail outlets
Frontline is the biggest distributor in the UK and would be very likely to be the distributor of my
magazine, because they distribute to the wholesalers which then distribute further to all of the major
supermarkets in the UK. Although my magazine is aimed at a slightly younger audience, it is quite
similar in many ways to the well known magazine Q, (studied in my research and planning stage)
which is the biggest selling monthly magazine in the UK. Q is published by Bauer Media, which was
formed in 2008 by privately owned international publisher Bauer- The biggest of its kind in Europe.
Bauer Media work with Frontline along with Haymarket and the BBC to distribute their
magazines, which also include other well known titles such as FHM and Take a Break.
