How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
In the media, a lot of the time, represent
teenagers in a negative way and that has
therefore formed a stereotype that could be
offensive for many. Sometimes the media
suggest that teenagers do not have very good
moral reasoning and that they always stretch
their boundaries etc. I have taken that image
of the young youth and tried to turn it into
something positive by not denying the
representation of them, but by trying to make
the media see it from the teenagers point of
view. This means that my music magazine
challenges the representation of the social
groups in a good way and try to make the
world see it from the teenagers point of view
and that my make people start to disbelieve
the stereotype.
In my music magazine the dominant represented social
group is teenagers/students and I have included many
elements to make this clear and to target the consumer
personally.
I have not represented the teenagers/students different
in the magazine as to what they are. Because young
adults makes mistakes, they test boundaries and they
live life. What I want my magazine to present is that it is
okay, that it is normal to experiment with things and
make the media and world to understand that. I have
done this by using mise-en-scene. The model has pink
hair which is a bit rebellious, she also has not shaved
her underarms which represent the free will most of the
teenagers have. This way I threw a positive light on the
young adults in the social group that wants to express
themselves and tell them that it is okay. This means
that I have challenged the worlds and medias view on
the topic that it is okay to be the stereotype
experimental young adults.
Because my magazine is aimed at young adults
which is a very specific age range. I represented
the social group in the text, because the font that I
used is sans serif. A very easily understandable
font called Arial is been used in the interview in
the double page spread. So when the students or
teenagers are done with school for the day, they
would want to relax with an easy readable and
entertaining magazine. This particular social group
tend to use bad language and slang words,
therefore I have tried to include this in the text so
the consumer feel represented. So I have
represented the social group with the easy
readable text and enjoyable contents.
I have also represented age in my magazine through
the images I have selected to use. The images are free
spirited with a rebellious model who represent the
youth, there are also photographs of live concerts
which represent the life of the students. This way I
represent the social group by posting images of what
they might do in a Friday night and it could suggest
that the audience can relate to the way their age is
being represented, and then I though a positive light
on it so it does not become forbidden.
My magazine is aimed at a middle class set of
students and young people, so to address this I have
done a couple of things. In the magazine I have not
included any expensive brands or seen as a different
class to the target consumer. By doing this my
audience feel as if they can relate to the people and
contents in the magazine. The magazine represent
the student working class of people through hobbies
and interest such as singing and working band and
artist so the audience can relate to hard work.
However, the model might come of as if she belongs to
a higher class, but in the interview the consumer gets to
know that she works hard and that shows the audience
that you can work yourself up. So it gives the consumer
hope, it creates a role model. I have not included any
ethnic group stereotypes to ensure that all readers is
interested in reading the music magazine.
