Question 2: How does your
media product represent
particular social groups?
Ethnicity
• My main focus for my media product was for the white community. My
magazine is of the genre Rap and Hip hop. This is stereotypically preferred to
the black community but I am breaking the mould as I am creating a
magazine for the white community instead.
• My audience research played a part in the creation of my product. Most of the
white males that I asked preferred Rap and Hip-hop to the other genres, so
that helped me in deciding what genre and to whom. I did ask an even
number of black males and white males to see if either ethnicity would find
my magazine appealing. This means that I had feedback from different points
of views.
• I have included a photo of a Saudi Arabian male which could appeal to my
target audience. The reason why I have done this is because by including a
ethnic minority, it links to the stereotype of the genre of the magazine. This
means that the magazine looks true to the genre and has diverse elements.
Age
• The age range I have selected for my magazine is for 16+
• The reason for my choice is because this is the age when people
start sixth form. (Also having a job which relates to class.) The
mode of language plays a part in the age as well, as the younger
ages may not understand the terminology within the magazine
used. My audience research in task seven said that each
individual asked was at least 16 years of age or older.
• I think by adding the social media box on my contents page
relates to the age group for my magazine because 7 people said
they used social media often and they were 16 years old or older.
Class
• The class I have chosen to target is the working class
• The reason for this is that it is stereotypically known for the working class to
be interested in this type of genre. This is also known as "white trash" This
particular social group is known for poverty and a simple lifestyle which is
why I have made the price for my magazine relatively cheap (£2) Each
person I asked in my audience research mentioned that they had some
type of job regardless of ethnicity. This means that they are working on
minimum wage and would not be able to afford a magazine over that
selected amount. However this is appealing as cheap products tend to sell
faster and in quantity.
• An example of representing the social class is through the mise en scène
used on the front cover. My model is wearing stereotypical "gangster"
clothing yet still fashionable to those who do not conform to stereotypes.
Lifestyle
• The lifestyle my magazine should appeal to is actually contrasted
to the class. The lifestyle should be a stereotypical rich, high living
mode of life because of the genre of my magazine. In Rap and Hip
hop, the artists tend to have music videos and lyrics dedicated to
wealth. In my audience research, most of them have part time jobs,
this means that money is a priority for my target audience and this
type of content would interest them.
• I think this lifestyle portrayed in my magazine is a contrast to my
target audience because it is aimed at working class yet contains
stories and features about wealth. This means that it is attractive to
the reader as the gold colours on my contents page look bright and
shiny-like jewels. This can be motivating for my readers and would
make them want to read my magazine.
Gender
• My magazine is mainly aimed at males. The reason is that this type
of genre is appealing to the masculine side by stereotype. An
example is this is that my main image displays an artist who is male,
this shows that the male readers are able to relate to the magazine
as they are, male. Another example is the dark colour scheme
throughout the magazine. This colour is stereotypically not meant to
appeal to the female side as it depicts a moody and angry theme,
something that females are not clichéd to.
• However I have included an image of a female. This means that the
sexuality of my readers is stereotypically for heterosexuals. The
meaning of the female appearing on the contents page is for the
reader to be interested in the page as she looks attractive and the
colour filter I chose suits the received idea of femininity by being a
light pink colour.
