How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? (753 words)
When I began creating my media products of the music video, Digipak and magazine advert I made
sure that there was a running theme regarding the fonts, colours and style of the album and video.
This was to ensure that the album would be easily recognised by consumers. All three products
have different purposes and my main aim to try and fulfil their purposes.
The sole purpose of my music video is to entertain the target audience and allow the audience to
watch the artist perform and put a visual to the music when listening to the song. I have definitely
achieved this entertainment in my music video as there is a variety of shots, locations and
costumes to keep the audience interested and stop them losing any attention. I also wanted my
music video to involve my audience and make them feel part of this. I attempted to accomplish this
by having frequent eye contact when the artist is singing to the camera. This invites the audience in
and maintains focus on the video. The fact that I included my artist dressed as a male would
entertain my audience in two ways; one being comical and the other emotional. This is because the
underlying theme of love starts to come through as she is saying she doesn’t need a man anymore
as she can just do it herself. This will attract the feminine audience as she is showing independence
and strength. By having this emotive theme, it will keep the audience entertained. The dancing of
the female in the ball gown will entertain audiences as her dancing is very elegant and consumers
may admire this skill of dance and performance.
When deciding on the purpose of my magazine advert, I would say its main role is to promote the
album and market it, especially to its target audience but also to those who wouldn’t normally buy
or listen to that type of music or artist. This will increase the overall fan base for the artist and
therefore increase sales and the amount of people who buy the album and any future albums she
may release. The colours I have used are yellows and whites; these are bright colours and fit into
the style of light and colour. The white is very pure and could portray innocence throughout the
artist and the album, whereas the yellow is very childish and playful and could bring out the more
fun side of the artist. The magazine advert is well matched to the main music video due to the fact
that the artist is the main image across the page. She looks very glamorous and has big hair and a
full face of makeup on to increase attractiveness. The purple dress combines well with the yellow
and white coloured text and creates an overall house style.
The purpose of my digipak could be a collector’s item or purely just a CD pack. I wanted to try and
make my digpak appealing to both the current fans of Florence and the Machine but also those
who don’t normally listen to her and try and encourage them to buy it and become a fan and
supporter of her music. I used the same fonts and colours as my magazine advert. I think it’s
necessary to have an easily identifiable house style so that the artist stands out against the
hundreds of artists in the pop genre and the music industry as a whole. The font I used is a
“handwritten” font and fits into the playfulness of the yellows and purples used in the advert and
digipak. The inside of the digipak serves its purpose well as a collector’s item as it has a personal
message written by the artist inside for the fans and also for the creators of the album. This will
mean a lot to supporters of the artist as it shows that she is grateful for all love they show her. The
images I used are posed ones of the artists and she looks stunning in them which attracts the
audience even more. In two of the photos she is looking directly at the camera which creates a
connection between the consumer and the artist.
Overall, I would say that through the use of a house style and running themes, my ancillary tasks
link well with my main music video and attract the audience and fulfil their roles and purposes.
