The document summarizes the key design elements and conventions used in the student's media magazine project. It examines aspects of the front cover, contents page, and double-page spread. For the front cover, the student researched magazines like DJ Mag and Mixmag for inspiration on elements like the masthead, color scheme, cover lines, and featured model shot. The contents page layout was inspired by DJ Mag, using columns and headers. The double-page spread emulates Mixmag's layout of a full-page image alongside the article. Design conventions like pull quotes, captions, and consistent colors are utilized.
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. FRONT COVER
My front cover has been created through a lot
of research from various magazines such as DJ
mag, Mixmag etc. These magazines are in
stores at the moment and I believe keeping up
to date with my researched helped me to
include various magazine elements. Both DJ
mag and Mixmag are dance and club culture
magazines just like mine. However DJ mag and
Mixmag was very different in the way they laid
out the design oh their magazines, for example
DJ magazine had a black background
compared to Mixmag which had a bright blue
background.
3. FRONT COVER
• Masthead:
The masthead of my magazine is simple and bright making it easy for readers to
identify, because of its simple font and neon green font colour. My masthead
was inspired by DJ mag whose logo is also bright simple and easy to recognise. I
created my masthead on Illustrator where I created gaps in the letters D and P
to make my masthead unique. Also my logo didn’t seem to stand out as much
so I used satin layer on top to make my logo look 3D.
4. FRONT COVER
• Colour Scheme:
From my magazine research from Mixmag and DJ mag I found that having a colour
scheme is important if you want to attract a loyal readership, make your magazine look
professional and also create an element of consistency throughout your magazine. In
my magazine proposal I had already picked my colour scheme which was neon pink,
green and yellow to help attract my young audience but also the colours green and
yellow have connotations of something ‘new’ and ‘fresh’ just like DOPE magazine!
This meant that my cover lines had to also incorporate the colour scheme. The cover
lines inform the reader of what to expect inside in some cases catch attention of
readers if they see an artist they like named on the cover. Mixmag did not use much
cover lines on its front cover so again I used DJ mag for my inspiration, I made the cover
lines align on either sides of the front cover, not overlapping my model at all. The main
cover line includes a text box with the word exclusive inside to help capture the
attention of the reader.
5. FRONT COVER
• Typical magazine conventions:
Skyline
Magazine website
Featured model
Freebies & puffs
Cover lines
Barcode & price
6. FRONT COVER
• Shot type:
The most important feature on a magazine front cover is a good
quality image. The front cover attracts the readers if it looks good,
fits in with the rest of the cover and if the reader is interested in the
artist featured as they’ll want to purchase the magazine. Mixmag
used a medium shot of Tiga for their front cover which helped to
inspire my shot type. I used a long shot similar to a medium shot
however it shows the whole body of my model. I used a long shot
to show the reader what my model is wearing as my typical
reader of my magazine has an interest in fashion. Using a long
shot, establishes what my model is wearing and where she is.
However, as it is hard to see her facial expression it makes the
audience create an element of ‘mystery’.
7. FRONT COVER
• Mise-en-scene:
My model is wearing black skinny high waisted jeans, black
bralet and bright red heels, usually on a night out girls tend to
colour block there outfits with statement heels or clutch bag.
Wearing black has connotations of night time and mystery
which I wanted my featured DJ to represent so that she attracts
more readers, also the ends of my models hair is a pink/purple
colour this stands out against the black outfit underneath.
Having my models hair this colour shows that she doesn’t live by
the expected lifestyle of a young girl, however she is
outrageous and she creates her own rules. The hair colour of my
models hair was inspired by the bright eye make-up that DJ
mag’s model magda had, as it stood out and attracted the
reader to her facial expression.
8. CONTENTS PAGE
My contents page was inspired by both Mixmag
and DJ mag although they are both very different.
Mixmag uses a double page for its contents page
and has 2 big images in the middle of the page
that attracted the reader straight away which
inspired me to have one main image with my
featured model in the middle of the listed content
of my magazine. However I didn’t like the idea of
having two pages for a contents page, this is when
I looked at DJ mag’s contents page, which was
one page that was very simple yet efficient for the
reader as it was easy to locate content they were
interested in.
9. CONTENTS PAGE
• Location & Photography:
For my location photography I have used brick lane because of
its well know variety of graffiti, graffiti is full of bright colours just
like the lighting of a night club. By having this in my background
shows that I have researched my audience and I have
considered them in the choice of my location photography.
Majority of dance music fans love to express themselves through
art, including this in my magazine helps to attract my target
audience as I have researched their interests. The lighting of my
location had a blue/purple tint to it as there was blue lighting,
from adjusting the brightness of the image I could get rid of the
tint, however I feel as though it represents coloured lighting in
night clubs. This shows that I have considered club culture
throughout my photography and editing.
10. CONTENTS PAGE
• Layout:
The layout of my contents page is very minimalistic and simple. I used headers to
categorise my content and make it more efficient for readers to locate articles etc. I
chose a yellow font for my headers as it was bright and stood out against the
background and also fitted my chosen colour scheme. I used two columns either side
of the page to make everything look aligned and neat, Typically the columns would
be on the edge of the page, however my columns were aligned more nearer the
middle as I thought it look more attractive and unique. I used the font colour white for
my cover lines, against my colourful background so that the colours do not clash, also
both the cover lines and headers had a drop shadow so that it is easier to read and
stand out against my background which is full of bright graffiti.
11. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• My double page spread was inspired
by Mixmag because of the layout of
their double page spread. Mixmag
used one whole page for an image
of the featured artist with the article
on the page beside it.
12. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• Layout:
My colour scheme of my front cover has again continued throughout my double
page spread to keep my house style consistent. I have used neon pink for my heading
, page numbers, photo credits, website link and pull quote with the rest of my article
font black. All these features listed are typical features of a DPS. Using a pull quote
instantly draws the attention of the reader straight to the quote, if the quote is
interesting the reader is more likely to read the article. DJ mag was my inspiration for
my pull quote as it interested me as a potential reader. Also using photo credits and
page numbers make the DPS look professional as well as efficient for the reader.
13. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• Words & Language:
My DPS includes one pull quote “Art is my inspiration!” I
chose this pull quote as it tells potential readers that the
article is about the artists life and is inspirational. Using this
as a pull quote makes it easier for readers to decide if the
article interests them and whether to read on or not. An
article published in Mixmag inspired me to use a pull quote
in my article as it looked attractive and professional. My
font choice of the pull quote was neon pink as it is a
feminine colour to show that the article is aimed at
females but also fits into my neon colour scheme. The
magazine has used the artists full name to establish the
authority and how powerful the artist is in the music
industry.

14. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
• Model:
My model is sitting down in my double page
spread, this makes her look more relaxed an
willing to tell her fans more about her,
compared to the front cover where she is
standing up. Instead of my model sitting down
properly on the chair she is sitting on it back to
front, this suggests to the reader that she is a
rebel and makes her own rules and she doesn’t
seem to follow the typical rules of others. This
attracts a younger audience as my model is
unique because she is portrayed as inspirational
because of her career however she also has a
rebellious side to her.
