What are Multimodal Texts?
• are often live, digital text, or paper-based. It requires
the processing of more than one method and the
recognition of the interconnections between
information.
What are Multimodal Texts?
• A text may be defined as multimodal when it
combines two or more semiotic systems:
Semiotics is the study of the process of making meaning
from signs.
• There are five semiotic systems in total – audio,
gestural, linguistics, spatial, and visual.
Semiotic Systems
Linguistics: vocabulary, structure, grammar of oral/ written
language.
Visual: color, vectors and viewpoint in still and moving
images
Audio: volume, pitch and rhythm of music and sound effect
Gestural: movement, facial expression and body language.
Other term for this is kinesthetic.
Spatial: proximity, direction, position of layout,
organization of objects in space

of different modes such as gestural, spatial, audio, and
oral language.

moving images shown on
the screen, usually with
sounds
2. Animation
a method of story telling
using figures that are
manipulated to appear as a
series of moving images.
3. Slideshows

that is based

electronic
posters is a
digital
presentation of a
study and can be
accessed
through the use
of software.

Is a multimedia
presentation of a
narrative structure
combining a variety

Paper- based multimodal texts is conveyed to the reader
through varying combinations of written language and
still images.
