What are MULTIMODAL TEXTS?
•A text may be defined as multimodal when
it combines two or more semiotic systems.
•Semiotics is the study of the process of
making meaning from signs.
FIVE SEMIOTICS SYSTEM:
•LINGUISTIC
•VISUAL
•AUDIO
•GESTURAL
•SPATIAL
•LINGUISTIC – concerned with
spoken and written language
through the use of vocabulary,
generic structure, and grammar
of oral/written language.
•VISUAL – concerns still and moving
images’ color, saliency, paper layouts,
vectors, viewpoint, screen formats, and
visual symbols; short framing, subject
distance, and angle; camera movement
and subject movement.
•AUDIO – related to music, sound
effects, noises, ambient noise, and silence
through the use of volume, pitch, and
rhythm.
•GESTURAL - related to the
movement of body, hands, and eyes;
facial expression, demeanors, and body
language, and use of rhythm, speech,
stillness, and angles.
•SPATIAL – is concerned with
environmental spaces and
architectural spaces and the use of
proximity, direction, layout, the

DIGITAL MULTIMODAL TEXTS
•Such as film, animation, slide shows, e-posters,
digital stories, and web pages, convey meaning
through combinations of written and spoken
language, visual (still and moving image), audio,
gestural and spatial modes.
LIVE MULTIMODAL TEXTS
•Include dance, performance, or storytelling,
and theatrical play, convey meaning through
combinations of modes such as gestural,
spatial, spoken language, and audio.
