Quantum is a project that provides networking services for OpenStack. It allows tenants to define complex network topologies rather than being limited to static connectivity options. Quantum uses plugins to support different backend technologies and integrates with Nova to provision virtual networks. The initial release focused on basic L2 networking capabilities. Future work includes improving production readiness, integrating all Nova networking features, and implementing advanced services like L3 routing.

Suresh’s experience includes extensive protocol development, having developed IP routing and multicast protocols from scratch and deploying them in large ISPs. Suresh was part of the original TiMetra team before becoming part of Alcatel Lucent as Principal Engineer. He then took a role as Director of Engineering at Juniper where he worked on their QFabric product. Earlier in his career, Suresh worked in software engineering at Shasta Networks (Nortel acquired) as well as Fore Systems (Marconi, Ericsson acquired).

In this session we'll show how with just a few lines of YAML, you can build powerful application blueprints by composing pre-existing components, from polyglot web stacks to big data tools such as Riak. We'll also cover defining new blueprints using custom scripts, configuring machine selection and runtime policies, and managing new locations such as Clocker -- the cloud of docker.

Scaling OpenStack Networking Beyond 4000 Nodes with Dragonflow - Eshed Gal-Or...Cloud Native Day Tel Aviv
As OpenStack matures, more users move from “dipping a toe” to deploying at large scale, with 1000's of nodes.
OpenStack networking has long been a limiting factor in scaling beyond a few hundreds of nodes, forcing users to turn to cell splitting, or to complete offloading of the networking to the underlay systems and forfeit the overlay network altogether.
Dragonflow is a fully distributed, open source, SDN implementation of Neutron, that handles large scale deployments without splitting to cells.
In testing we've conducted, we were able to scale to 4000+ controllers (each controller is typically deployed on a compute node), while maintaining the same performance we had on a small 30 node environment.
With the 2.0 release of MAAS, we are delivering High Availability for both Region and Rack components of MAAS. This deck describes the MAAS architecture and how HA is implemented.

SDN allows to dynamically configure and manage virtual network, this allows for easy provisioning of tenant's network in teh cloud

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

13. Why Quantum? 1) Rich Topologies: Cloud tenants deploying enterprise workloads often require flexibility to define sophisticated network topologies 2) Cloud operators want to leverage advanced capabilities in their network infrastructure
14. Why Quantum?: Rich Topologies Existing Nova-only Network Provisioning Model: Cloud operator statically determines a type of connectivity (flat, private) that will be statically applied to all VMs. Tenant VMs get connectivity based on static model.

16. Why Quantum?: QoS to meet SLAs Cloud operators may want to be able to guarantee the a tenant VM or portion of the physical NIC capacity, just like they provide a portion of CPU + Memory. Such properties can be exposed as additional port attributes using Quantum API extensions. Cisco Quantum plugin enables leveraging properties of UCS hardware to provide QoS guarantees.
17. Why Quantum?: Avoid VLAN Limits Many limitations when using VLANs for network isolation: Limited # of VLANs supported, limited to single physical subnet, requires configuring physical switches, etc…. Open vSwitch Quantum plugin now supports L2-in-L3 tunneled networks without needing to use VLANs. Uses existing GRE tunneling code in Open vSwitch (compatible with NVGRE proposal) At summit, Cisco, Red Hat, Citrix & Nicira discussed plans to add support for VXLAN tunneling proposal.

19. Project Status: Who should use Quantum? “Early adopters” are already putting Quantum into their OpenStack trial deployments. Caution: deployments are by people who understand the limitations of Quantum and are looking to improve the platform by running/testing it. Some aspects of the traditional Nova networking model are not yet integrated with Quantum (e.g., floating IPs, DHCP) This will improve significantly over the Essex time frame, watch for updates on the OpenStack list + IRC meetings.
20. Quantum Essex Roadmap Top Priority: production quality + usability: Automated functional, integration & scale testing Parity/integration with all existing Nova network capabilities. Dashboard + client enhancements for ease of use. API auth with Keystone (mostly done) Packaging & distribution Essex is target for production quality.
