Bright Spot In Gloomy Storage Biz: Sub-$5,000 SOHO NAS
By Joseph F. Kovar, ChannelWeb 12:37 PM EDT Fri. Jun. 12, 2009
However, she did admit there was somewhat of an apples-to-oranges comparison between
2008 and 2007. "Some vendors we didn't capture [data from] in 2007, but we later found
out did well, like QNAP in Taiwan, which sells mainly to Europe," she said.
In 2008, Netgear was the largest seller of sub-$5,000 SOHO NAS appliances, with sales of
$98.7 million, up 128 percent over 2007. That gave the company a 28 percent share of the
market, Gartner said.
It was followed by Buffalo Technology with sales of $44 million, down 47.2 percent; EMC
(NYSE:EMC)'s Iomega (NYSE:IOM) with sales of $38 million, up 69 percent; Hewlett-Packard
(NYSE:HPQ) with sales of $30 million, up 13 percent; and LaCie with sales of $25 million
(percent change unavailable), according to Gartner.
In terms of units, Buffalo Technology led the market despite a 34.4-percent drop in
shipments to 62,950 units, giving it a market share of 19 percent.
It was followed by Netgear with 52,255 units, LaCie with 50,000 units, QNAP with 32,900
units and EMC's Iomega with 19,392 units, Gartner said.

RAID, single disk and JBOD disk configurations.
Online RAID Capacity Expansion
•Online RAID Capacity Expansion enables users to flexibly
expand the storage capacity with all the data reserved.
•Replace the hard drives on Turbo NAS Series step by step
to increase the storage capacity.
Online RAID Level Migration
•Add a hard drive to the disk configuration and migrate
to higher RAID configuration for higher level of
redundancy.
•Online RAID Level Migration allows users to transfer
and upgrade the RAID level settings easily.
HDD S.M.A.R.T (Self-monitoring Analysis and
Reporting Technology)
HDD S.M.A.R.T offers a quick overview for the Hard Disk
Drive Status which enables users to monitor the status
of hard disk drive to check potential problems. This tool
helps prevent the unexpected failure of hard disk and
avoid critical data loss.
59. RAID Recovery
RAID Recovery
If you unplug more than two disks from a RAID 5 volume or more than three disks from
a RAID 6 disk volume, the RAID volume will crash normally RAID Recovery is QNAP’s
exclusive technology. It can recover failed RAID 1/ 5/ 6 to the degraded mode and
failed RAID 0 and JBOD to the normal state.
60. Encrypted File System to Protect Sensitive Data Leakage-1
If the hard disks or the NAS were stolen, the sensitive data might be leaked!
The Encrypted File System feature of the NAS allows the server managers to encrypt each
storage volume to prevent data loss caused by theft. All the data is encrypted by AES 256-
bit, malicious persons can only find scramble code on the encrypted hard disks.
Applications: Bank, government, medical data, financial information, private photos, etc.

61. Encrypted File System to Protect Sensitive Data Leakage-2
The server managers can choose different levels of security.
Manual unlock:
A. High security The server manager can login the management
page to input the password or import the key file
Volume 1 to unlock the volume when the system boots up.

and mounted to the system automatically.
Encryption Key #2 If the hard disks are stolen, the data cannot be accessed.
Cannot fully prevent data leakage if the entire server is stolen, but it
The encryption key is is more convenient since the server manager does not need to enter
saved on the NAS the encryption password manually.
62. Comprehensive Event Log System
Comprehensive Event Log System
Detailed logs of file-level data access to the Turbo NAS via Samba, FTP, AFP,
HTTP(HTTPS), Telnet, iSCSI and SSH, and network services accessed by the
online users are all recorded.
IT administrators can easily control detailed logs of each file (who, when,
and what actions were done).
The logs can also be
exported as Excel (csv)
file for analysis.
63. Policy-based Automatic IP Blocking- 1
To prevent the NAS from malicious attacks, the server manager can create an IP filter
policy to allow, deny, or auto-blocking the IP address or network domain which
attempts to connect to the NAS via SSH/ Telnet/HTTP(S)/ FTP/ samba/AFP.
64. Policy-based Automatic IP Blocking- 2
Users can control the access to the server according to the number of times
an IP fails to login the server via a certain connection method.
The connection type includes SSH, Telnet, HTTP(S), FTP, SAMBA, and AFP.
65. Instant SMS Alert
The instant system alerts would be sent via the SMS Service provided by the SMS
Provider.
Users could enter 2 sets of mobile phone number worldwide at most to receive the
message and manage the system in time.
System Error!!
66. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
Enable SNMP service on the NAS to actively send the information, warning or error of
the NAS to max 3 SNMP trap addresses installed SNMP management tool. Moreover,
MIB of NAS can be downloaded and imported to your PC with SNMP tool. Your PC can
then acquire the info of the NAS actively, e.g. CPU-usage, temperature.
Event log
(info, error, warning)
67. Import SSL Secure Certificate
The administrator can upload a secure certificate and an RSA private key in
