Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that combines movement, meditation, and regulation of qi (vital energy) to support health and healing. It has only become widely known in the West in recent decades. While similar to tai chi, qigong places more emphasis on cultivating energy than martial arts skills. Regular practice has been shown to improve health and immunity, though traditional training takes years to learn properly under supervision to avoid potential imbalances.

Managing and suppressing the manifest symptoms with Yoga techniques is just as good or bad as modern allopathic medicine that focuses primarily on symptomatic management without ever getting close to the real cause of most disorders. In this talk, Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani will explore the need to address the primary cause of the problem followed by symptomatic management without which it could merely be Yogopathy.

Patañjali is often regarded as a great saint, who lived most probably in the second – fifth century BCE.
He is the compiler of a great treatise on Yoga, entitled Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras. He is also regarded as the author of a great commentary on Pāṇini’s Aṣṭādhyāyī, known as Mahābhāṣya, treatise on Sanskrit grammar and linguistics.
He is also credited as the author of a medical text, a commentary on Charaka Samhita, known as Carakavartikka.
Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras is a great treatise that outlines the art and science of Yoga meditation for Self-Realization.
It is mainly a compilation of a much older oral tradition.
Patañjali divided his Yoga Sūtras into four pāda or chapters. It consists of 196 aphorisms or sutras.

Medical Qigong principle lays on the fundamental belief that all illness arises from imbalance, stagnation in energetic patterns. It is used to treat these disorders and is used as a preventative medicine by restoring and adjusting energetic balances, breaking through stagnation bringing unimpeded flow and circulation back to the body.

Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS
These simplified slides by Dr. Sidra Arshad present an overview of the non-respiratory functions of the respiratory tract.
Learning objectives:
1. Enlist the non-respiratory functions of the respiratory tract
2. Briefly explain how these functions are carried out
3. Discuss the significance of dead space
4. Differentiate between minute ventilation and alveolar ventilation
5. Describe the cough and sneeze reflexes

2. What is Qigong?
• Qi (Chi) = ENERGY
• Gong (Kung) = SKILL
• Qigong = The SKILL of attracting vital ENERGY
• Qigong is a self-healing art that combines
movement and meditation.
3. Is Qigong new?
• Qigong is the most ancient of the Chinese arts
• It is the foundation of Chinese medicine
and the Chinese martial arts
4. Why have I never
heard of Qigong?
• Qigong was suppressed when the
Communists took over China
• It has only been about 15-20 years since
the government has allowed the practice
5. Why practice Qigong?
There are three main reasons why people do Qigong:
1. To gain strength, improve health or reverse a disease
2. To gain skill working with Qi so as to become a healer
3. To become more connected with "Tao, God, Source,
Spirit, etc." for a more meaningful connection with
nature and the universe.
6. Is Qigong like Tai Chi?
• Tai chi is a form of external Qigong
** Tai chi has more of an emphasis on the martial arts and movement,
where Qigong has its emphasis on energy and healing
7. Do I have to believe in Qi?
Qi (Chi) means energy and is often a difficult
concept for Westerners. You do not have to
accept this concept to benefit from Qigong
8. Current Research
Starting around 1980, scientists in China began extensive clinical and experimental
research on medical applications of Qigong. Most of these studies were reported only
at international conferences, and only a few were published because suitable scientific
journals are not available in China. Today, Western research on Qigong and its effects
on immunity is still limited, despite the increasing number of positive results observed
in clinical practice.
9. Important Note
Most traditional training takes many years of practice under the supervision of
someone who has also learned over years, someone who can guide and prevent the
student from taking an unbalanced approach to Qigong practice. The orthodox
practitioners and schools warn that improperly supervised practice can cause
unbalanced circulation of inner energies that can eventually lead to detrimental
effects on the various systems of the body, both mental and physical.
Editor's Notes
Qigong is an ancient form of health maintenance dating back thousands of years and is believed to be the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The word Qigong contains two concepts: Qi, the vital energy of the body, and gong, the training or cultivation of the Qi. Qigong practice integrates meditation, breathing techniques and slow physical movements to promote the circulation of Qi within the human body and consequently improve spiritual, physical and mental health.
The documented history of Qigong goes back approximately 2,500 years. However, Chinese archaeologists and historians have found references to Qigong-like techniques at least five thousand years old. With more than 10,000 styles of Qigong and 200 million people practicing, there are a variety of methods -- broadly categorized as internal and external. Internal Qigong is much like meditation, with visualizations in order to guide the energy. External Qigong includes movement accompanying the meditation. Qigong is famous in China for curing chronic disease and promoting health.
Soaring Crane Qigong was the style that led the reemergence of Qigong in modern China.Today Qigong is encouraged in China because of the dramatic improvement in the health of those that practice it.
Medical Qigong treatment has been officially recognized as a standard medical technique in Chinese hospitals since 1989. It has been included in the curriculum of major universities in China. After years of debate, the Chinese government decided to officially manage Qigong through government regulation in 1996 and has also listed Qigong as part of their National Health Plan.
Tai chi has more of an emphasis on the martial arts and movement, where Qigong has its emphasis on energy and healing
Two explanations of how Qigong work can be beneficial using accepted Western concepts: 1. The mind/body connection: We now realize that the state of your mind affects the state of your body. Stress is the clearest example -- people that cannot handle stress are more susceptible to disease. 2. Using visualization to treat disease: Cancer patients often have dramatic results when using appropriate visualizations to stimulate their immune systems.
Beginning about 1980, extensive clinical and experimental research on medical applications of Qigong was carried out by scientists in China. Most of these studies were reported only at international conferences, and only a few were published because suitable scientific journals are not available in China. Today, Western research on Qigong and its effects on immunity is still limited, despite the the increasing number of positive results observed in clinical practice.
Most traditional training takes many years of practice under the supervision of someone who has also learned over years, someone who can guide and prevent the student from taking an unbalanced approach to Qigong practice. The orthodox practitioners and schools warn that improperly supervised practice can cause unbalanced circulation of inner energies that can eventually lead to detrimental effects on the various systems of the body, both mental and physical.
