This document provides an overview of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It discusses key concepts like yin-yang balance and the five elements theory. Treatment methods covered include herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, tui na massage, qigong, tai chi, and meditation. Diagnosis techniques involve observing the patient, listening to their pulse, and examining their tongue. While generally safe, some potential risks from TCM are also outlined, such as herb-drug interactions and infection from unsterilized needles.
Do you wonder what's the fuss about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)? Do you want to know how to get healthier, treat pain, improve your energy, prevent disease, and manage illness?
Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is a family of procedures involving the stimulation of specific points on the body using a variety of techniques.
The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metal needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.
Acupuncture involves the stimulation of anatomical points on the body with thin needled.
Acupuncture patients usually feel little to no pain.
Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and are manipulated either by hand or electricity.
Cupping
Cupping therapy is a form of CTM in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction.
The cups can be made of a variety of materials, including:
Glass
Bamboo
Earthenware
The suction of the cups mobilizes blood flow to promote the healing of a broad range of medical ailments
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing.
The purpose is to strengthen the blood and improve Qi flow.
Direct and indirect methods.
Traditionally used to treat colds.
But it is not for everyone.
Because it is used specifically for patients suffering from cold or stagnant constitutions, it should not be used on anyone diagnosed with too much heat.
Tui Na
Also known as Chinese massage
Uses wave-like motions to loosen joints and nourish muscles.
Brings awareness back to a person’s body, making it a first step in the healing process.
Stimulates the flow of Qi, blood and body fluids
Can be used to treat pain, stress or digestion problems.
Risks and SIde effects
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) originated in ancient China
and has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use herbs,
acupuncture, and other methods to treat a wide range of conditions.

Alternative medicine is any practice that aims to achieve the healing effects of medicine, but which lacks biological plausibility and is untested, untestable or proven ineffective. Complementary medicine (CM), complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), integrated medicine or integrative medicine (IM), and holistic medicine are among many rebrandings of the same phenomenon. Alternative therapies share in common that they reside outside medical science, and rely on pseudoscience. Traditional practices become "alternative" when used outside their original settings without proper scientific explanation and evidence. Frequently used derogatory terms for the alternative are new-age or pseudo, with little distinction from quackery.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection
The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS
Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) originated in ancient China
and has evolved over thousands of years.
TCM practitioners use herbal medicines and various mind and
body practices, such as acupuncture and tai chi, to treat or prevent
health problems.
Traditional forms of medicine have been used in China since the 3rd
Century. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system consist three

•1-Your body is an integrated whole
•Each and every structure in your body is an integral and necessary part
of the whole. It is a complex, interrelated system that is powered by life
force, or energy.
2-You are completely connected to nature
Changes in nature are always reflected in your body.
3- You were born with a natural self-healing ability
Your body is a microcosm that reflects the macrocosm.
4-Prevention is the best cure.
TCM teaches you how to interpret what your body is telling you.

.11-Chinese herbal medicine
◦The Chinese Materia Medica (a pharmacological reference book used by TCM practitioners)
describes thousands of medicinal substances— primarily plants, but also some minerals and
animal products.
◦Different parts of plants, such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds, are used.
◦In TCM, herbs are often combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, liquid extracts,
granules, or powders.
2- Acupuncture
◦Acupuncture is a family of procedures involving the stimulation of specific points on the body using a variety
of techniques.
The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with
thin, solid, metal needles that are manipulated by the hands or by
electrical stimulation.
Acupuncture involves the stimulation of anatomical points on the body with thin needled.
Acupuncture patients usually feel little to no pain.
Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and are manipulated either by hand or electricity.
11. TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE11
.3
◦Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that
involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to
facilitate healing.
◦The purpose is to strengthen the blood and improve Qi flow.
◦Direct and indirect methods.
◦Traditionally used to treat colds.
◦But it is not for everyone.
◦Because it is used specifically for patients suffering from cold
or stagnant constitutions, it should not be used on anyone
diagnosed with too much heat.
12. .44-Cupping
◦Cupping therapy is a form of
◦TCM in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction.
◦The cups can be made of a variety of materials, including:
Glass
Bamboo
Earthenware
◦The suction of the cups mobilizes blood flow to promote the healing of a broad
range of medical ailments
13. TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
.55- Tui Na
◦Also known as
Chinese massage
◦Uses wave-like motions to loosen joints and nourish muscles.
◦Brings awareness back to a person’s body, making it a first step in the
healing process.
◦Stimulates the flow of Qi, blood and body fluids
◦Can be used to treat pain, stress or digestion problems.
14. TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
.66-Qigong
◦Qigong is a Chinese form
of exercise.
◦It regulates the mind and breathing to
promote the flow of Qi.
◦Qigong is often used to
treat diseases.
◦External Qigong is performed on a person by
a Qigong master
◦Internal Qigong is
practiced by oneself.
15. TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
.77-Tai chi
◦Tai chi is a centuries- old
mind and body practice.
◦It involves gentle, dance- like
body movements with mental
focus, breathing, and
relaxation.
16. TRADITIONAL CHINESE
MEDICINE
8-Meditation has been
practiced for thousands of
years.
It involves focusing on one
thing, such as breathing
patterns, while clearing all
other thoughts from the
mind.
Meditation is used to
replenish the flow of Qi,
which helps to ward off
illnesses.
People may experience
various feelings during
meditation. Some people
may begin to feel
overjoyed, while others
may experience extreme
sadness, and even cry.
Meditation is also
popularly practiced in
western countries as a
means of stress relief.
17. .1Herbal products
◦There have been reports of products being contaminated with drugs, toxins, or heavy metals or not
containing the listed ingredients.
◦Some of the herbs used in Chinese medicine can interact with drugs, can have serious side effects,
or may be unsafe for people with certain medical conditions.
◦For example, the Chinese herb ephedra (ma huang) has been linked to serious health complications,
including heart attack and stroke.
.2Acupuncture
◦Acupuncture needles as medical devices and requires that the needles be sterile, nontoxic, and
labeled for single use by qualified practitioners only
◦Relatively few complications from the use of acupuncture have been reported.
◦However, adverse effects—some of them serious—have resulted from the use of nonsterile needles
or improper delivery of acupuncture treatments.
.3Tai chi and qi gong
◦Are considered to be generally safe practices.
.4Moxibustion
◦Complications include allergic reactions, burns, and infections,
◦Both moxibustion and cupping (applying a heated cup to the skin to create a slight suction) may
mark the skin, usually temporarily.

Daoist yin-yang concepts
Yang predominates during the day and turns into yin after
dark.
The human body is regarded as the universe in miniature, when
the Yin and Yang elements in a person’s body are well balanced,
the person is in good health.
A person falls sick when the balance is disrupted.
20. •5 Element Theory of Traditional
Chinese Medicine
*There are 5 main elements
drawn for nature that help in
TCM diagnosis. They are water,
wood, fire, earth, and metal.
*Excess or deficiency in the
energy of one element will
influence the other elements.
21. 5 Element Theory of Traditional
Chinese Medicine
There are 12 main "organs"
that are paired in TCM -
Spleen/Stomach,
Lungs/Large Intestines,
Heart/Small Intestines,
Kidneys/Urinary Bladder,
Liver/Gallbladder, and
Pericardium/Triple Warmer
(San Jiao).
22. Interesting Methods of Diagnosis
There are four main
techniques to diagnosis
in TCM.
The first is observing
demeanour, vitality, and
physical appearance of a
person. This includes the
health of the hair, skin,
nails, and complexion.
25. Tongue
Diagnosis
25
•Observation of the tongue is
based on four main items: the
colour of the body of the
tongue, the shape, the coating,
and the moisture. Each area is
also related to an internal organ.
26. Checking Pulse
26
•Pulse diagnosis can inform on the state of the internal organs.
•Therearethreepositionsoneachwrist,witheachrelatingtoaspecific
organ system.
•There are three depths of pulse taking-superficial, medium, and deep.
•Eachofthe28pulsescanbedifferentfromtheothersaccordingtoits
