What have you learned from your audience feedback?

After reading the feedback from the audience, I have learned that we have managed to
produce an interesting piece that inspired some very positive feedback comments. We
effectively supported the genre and theme of the video through use of various
techniques. For example during editing, we used a colour correction tool and adjusted
the lighting and contrast to create a noticeable difference between the two girls. Our
use of costume, make up and props successfully represents the genre and narrative of
the song. One of the most repetitive comments was that our timing and lip-syncing
was precise throughout and that we created star persona competently.

Audience feedback
‘Creative and abstract shots reflect the feeling of the song’
‘Lyrics matched the images on screen’.

‘Semiotics were really good, I liked the heart on the arms and the smoke through the
nose’.

‘Great use of props creating star persona e.g. cigarette’.

‘A variety of camera movement to help audience discover the character and
familiarise with narrative. The camera movements are powerful and well framed. Use
of voyeurism to highlight/ support genre. Effective use of props to build star image,
the editing is smooth. Matches with genre conventions. Lots of close-ups and tracking
shots that support narrative and Goodwin’s conventions of music video. The variety
of shots and locations allow the audience to relate and understand narrative.’

Notably, virtually all feedback was very positive with the exception of one comment;
‘I didn’t understand the narrative’. I believe that this comment is more about the
audience member’s lack of understanding of the themes. This made me think that not
everyone will understand every music video idea. Although I believe that the
narrative in our video was projected strongly throughout with an ongoing theme of
chess to represent the inner battle for identity.
It would have been more helpful to receive more negative feedback in order to
improve in the future. The number of audience members was low, it would have been
better to have shown it to more people and therefore a broader spectrum of feedback. I
particularly agree with the comment about creating star persona. We were very aware
when casting, to ensure convincing performance. We also took into consideration how
costume, makeup, props and locations can contribute to creating star image. We made
sure that the clips we selected to use in the video were all good quality performance.

The general feedback was very encouraging although I understand that people not
within our target audience may not appreciate and understand the idea behind the
video. People’s taste in music, culturally and age specifically, vary greatly. If I were
to make another music video, the things I would do differently, would be to make sure
framing was sharp in every shot and the camera movements were spot on. Also, I
would prefer to film only in HD to maintain a high quality image throughout rather
than jumping between the two qualities of film.

In order to gain more feedback, it would have been a good idea to post the video on
youtube so that people globally could watch it and make comments.
