1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. Cover page
Masthead- This supports the genre and
conventions of rock and indie rock
magazines. It is the largest piece of text
on the cover and is also layered behind
the image which is often done. The word
‘Libertine’ develops the genre of my
magazine as it means someone who
doesn’t follow moral constraints and lives
with a sense of complete freedom.
Stereotypically this can represent the
lifestyle of a rock artist.
Headline- This supports the house style
with similar colours used throughout. It is
often a dominant piece of text in real
music magazines. Also the text above like
in most magazines gives a small idea of
the artists personality. Having it smaller
makes the name stand out
3. Main image- The clothing my artist wears in my image
represents his personality and style of music much like
most music magazines do. The shirt and tie represent
the ‘soul’ genre and the large trench coat represents
the rock genre. By having the tie around his clenched
fist it forms a link to his aggressive personality.
The eye contact is a convention that is commonly used
in cover pages of magazines. It is effective in
presenting the artist looking at the reader and getting
their attention. The straight face further represents his
stern personality presented in the article.
Cover page
4. Cover line-
The cover line links to the rock theme of most magazines of this genre
As they are often layered over image as it looks unfinished and messy which
Links to the genre style. In my magazine and all others the artists are of the magazines
Genre.
Sub heading-
This is a convention of real music magazines and is effective in giving the reader
a small bit of information to draw them in to reading the rest of the magazine. The
Graphite presents his age which is commonly done.
Splash-
These are always used in music magazines and most of the time offer some form of deal or
Prize to win. This is an effective way of catching the readers eye and makes them buy the
magazine to read on
Cover page
5. Contents page
Masthead-
The title of this page links to the house style of the whole
magazine as seen in other pages. Much like most professional
music magazines the title of the magazine is on both the cover
page and contents. As seen in most the ‘date’, ‘issue’ and page
name is put by the title. Having a white background and not
the image allows the title to stand out which is commonly
seen.
6. Text- My text fits the house style like all
of my pages with colours used and font.
The black rectangle behind the text is
often used as it makes the text stand
out over the image. Following another
convention of music magazines my text
includes personal pronouns to make the
text more personal and appealing.
There is also a section for the Cover
story which links the two pages which is
used most of the time.
Contents page
7. Contents page
Image- I have broken a convention used in
most music magazine images which is eye
contact of the individual. I did this as I
wanted him to come across as a edgy
character which fits with the rock genre. The
placement of the person next to the text is
also commonly used.
8. Article page
My article image represents the
personality of my artist which is nearly
always used. The guitars link to the
genre and his position links to his fun,
care free lifestyle spoken about in the
article.
The image of the retro TV with liquor in
it also represents my artists lifestyle
which is used to develop the readers
ideas of him. Alcohol is also a commonly
associated theme of the rock genre.
9. Article page
Article text-
Heading- The heading is a quote from
the artist is commonly used and it
develops the artist. For this heading it
represents his aggressive side which is
shown on other pages . The small text
underneath is a useful convention as it
sets the agenda of the article.
Article- This follows the conventions of
real music magazines as it is Q&A style
which is used to convey the artists
professional and private life. Personal
pronouns are also used in the article
text as it makes the reader feel they are
getting new, personal information
which draws them in.
10. Article page
Quotations-
These are used in music magazines
as it further makes the article more
personal to the reader and links to
the article text and imagery. It also
adds more depth to the pages.
The colours also keep to the house
style.
Another convention of music
magazines is to have the magazines
name and date of the issue
underneath.
